Book excerpt: The purpose of this grounded theory study was to investigate how middle school student perceptions of teacher approachability influenced their interactions with teachers. The fourteen participants were sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade general education middle school students from three school models (public, private, and Christian) in the metro area of a city in the southeastern United States. The Approach-Avoidance Theory, first proposed by Kurt Lewin, (1935) provided the theoretical framework for this study. The central research question that shaped this grounded theory study was: How do general education middle school students’ perceptions of teacher approachability influence the students’ interactions with their teachers? The three subquestions investigated whether or not social constructs in school, home environment, and student-teacher relationships had any impact on students’ perceptions of teacher approachability. Data collection incorporated an initial single-question screening questionnaire, a demographic questionnaire, individual and focus group interviews, and journaling/blogging. Data analysis included open, axial, and selective coding through transcription of participants’ responses to interview questions. Three major themes emerged through the data analysis: awareness (self- and other-), communication, and relationship, which were all influenced by social constructs in school, home environment, and student-teacher relationships. Trustworthiness and ethical considerations of data collection and analysis were addressed and implemented. Recommendations for future research included: student connectedness to teachers, creating environments that foster approachability, teaching self-advocacy skills to students, and students’ approach-avoidance tendencies according to personality.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this non-experimental, quantitative research study was to examine if a predictive relationship existed between general educators' perceived self-efficacy, attitudes toward inclusion, and the reading achievement of special needs students in an urban school district in the Midwestern United States. A convenience sample of 65 middle school reading teachers participated in the study. The theory of planned behavior, self-efficacy theory, and social cognitive theory provided a theoretical understanding of how inclusion affects the attitude and behaviors of teachers. Attitudes and beliefs affect behavior by determining what a middle school teacher does and does not do, thereby affecting what the student with a disability receives in the classroom. A simple linear regression was used to test the hypotheses according to scores generated from the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) short form and the Scale of Teachers' Attitude Toward Inclusive Classrooms (STATIC). The results of both simple linear regression analyses determined that neither the TSES nor the STATIC were found to be significant predictors of the change in Ohio Academic Achievement (OAA) reading test scores during the 2012-2013 school years. The results of this study added to the knowledge base of the field by examining the predictive relationship between teacher perceptions of their self-efficacy, attitudes, and regarding inclusion and the reading achievement of special education students that have been included in a general education classroom for reading instruction.

The participants were fifth- and sixth-grade middle school students and their math teachers in a Midwestern, rural school district. Most previous research has measured the quality of relationships using only teacher or student perspectives. Adolescent students and their math teachers participated in a cross-sectional survey that measured their perceptions of their relationships with each other in order to predict students' perceptions of the quality of their relationships with their teachers. The analytic procedures used independent samples t-tests, bivariate correlations, and multiple linear regression. Analyses revealed that students' math interest, math self-efficacy, and perceptions of their teachers' prosocial behaviors positively predicted students' perceptions of positive teacher relationships. The teachers' positive student relationship perceptions also predicted students' positive teacher relationship perceptions. Unexpectedly, teachers' socio-emotional support perceptions were not significantly associated with students' positive teacher relationship perceptions. Furthermore, these data show that students' own reports of math interest and math self-efficacy predicted their perceptions of positive teacher relationships. Moreover, students' perceptions of their teachers' prosocial classroom behaviors strongly predicted students' views of positive relationships with their teachers. Teachers' prosocial classroom behaviors are malleable, and study findings suggest further research on how teachers' prosocial behaviors shape students' positive teacher relationships.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study was designed to discover teacher and student perceptions related to the effectiveness of planned activities and instruction as well as to determine the impact that advisory programs have on improving the effectiveness of the student-teacher relationship. The participants were middle school students as well as teachers of grades 6, 7, and 8 in a large, suburban middle school in a school district in southeastern Pennsylvania. This research examined the results based upon the responses of 75 middle school teachers who completed the online survey and 82 seventh and eighth grade students who completed the online survey. The researcher also interviewed 13 teachers and eight students and completed focus groups with a total of 32 students to further assess the teacher and student feelings related to the advisory period. Results of the study indicated over 80% of both groups, teachers and students, believed the advisory period is helpful in strengthening the student-teacher relationship. The advisory teachers viewed themselves and were viewed by students as adults who advisees can count on in the school. There was some differentiation between the perspectives of the students and the teachers in what made advisory effective. There was a large difference between the perspectives of the seventh grade students and the eighth grade students. The majority of eighth graders primarily viewed the advisory time as a time to get work done while most seventh graders viewed this allotted as a time to make connections with each other and the advisory teacher.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this case study research was to examine the perceptions of teachers and parents towards current parental involvement factors in a suburban junior high school located in the Midwest United States. Such perceptions were compiled by means of surveys based on Dr. Joyce Epstein's Framework of the Six Dimensions of Parental Involvement: (a) parenting, (b) communication, (c) volunteering, (d) learning at home, (e) decision-making, (f) and collaborating with the community (Epstein, 1995). The subjects were N=36 seventh and eighth grade teachers, and N=344 parents of students. The descriptive statistical analysis did show a difference between teachers and parents in the dimensions of parenting, communication, and learning at home. To determine if the differences between teachers and parents were statistically significant, independent sample t-tests were conducted. The results indicated a large effect in the areas of parenting, communication, and learning at home. In addition, a multiple regression analysis was conducted to evaluate demographic characteristics of both parents and teachers in relation to their responses to involvement practices. The demographic characteristics evaluated for parents were: (a) grade of student, (b) number of children in school, (c) ethnicity, and (d) household income. The demographic characteristics evaluated for teachers included: (a) grade level taught, (b) gender, (c) discipline, and (d) years of experience. The regression analysis of parental demographics did not show any practical significance in any of the six dimensions when evaluating their perceptions of involvement. The regression analysis of teacher demographics indicated that years of experience were practically significant in how they perceived parental involvement in the areas of parenting, volunteering, and collaborating with the community.

Extant studies have contributed to the theoretical, empirical, and practical understanding of teacher empathy, but few have captured the voices of middle school students to understand their lived experiences; no studies have explored the topic in Christian academies. The theories guiding this study were Rogers’ theory of self and subsequent theories about student-centered pedagogy. The central research question was focused on the perceptions of teacher empathy as voiced by middle school students in Christian academies. Four research sub-questions were designed to dissect teacher empathy along cognitive, affective, and behavioral lines. Data collection in this transcendental phenomenological study included individual interviews with 10 students purposely selected from two schools, a focus group session with six of the participants, and letters written to hypothetical future middle school teachers. Data analysis followed Moustakas’ process of bracketing, open coding, and thematic analysis, yielding major themes of teacher engagement, means of empathy, immediate impact, and long-term impact. Findings revealed middle school students perceived teacher empathy as a relational process that positively impacted their personal and academic growth. A major implication for decision-makers is the necessity to prioritize relational cultures; administrators at Christian academies should also prioritize the inclusion of distinct Christian elements like prayer and scripture. The implication for teachers is the necessity to build ongoing, nonjudgmental, and transparent relationships that lead to functional, fundamental, and profound empathic opportunities.

Previous studies looked at the impact of trustworthy relationships among the adults in the school and the positive impact that had on achievement. One study done by Dr Megan Tschannen-Moran looked at trustworthy relationships between administrator and teachers and found this also has an impact on achievement. The study documented here looked at the students experience with trustworthy relationships and how they perceived the impact on their learning these relationships had. Data were gathered through interviews and analyzed using hermeneutic phenomenology with reflexivity in the analysis. This case study presents a description of the challenges in completing one kind of qualitative study known as phenomenological study and care needed to interview minor participants.

This qualitative research study investigated the perceptions of middle school educators serving as language arts, reading, science, social studies, or mathematics teachers and principals and assistant principals. The study was conducted in 3 middle schools with a grade structure of 6-8 in southeastern Pennsylvania. Seven administrators and 64 teachers participated in the questionnaire portion of the study. Individual interviews with 15 participants (12 teachers and 3 administrators) provided additional insights on their perceptions. Results of the study indicated that middle school educators perceived collaboration as a vehicle for positively impacting the professional development of teachers and for increasing student learning. The research findings also suggested that many educators perceived specific benefits of teacher collaboration to be improvement of individual teaching skills based upon knowledge gained from colleagues, clearer goals for student learning, and increased reflection on the teaching and learning process. The findings also identified challenges to collaboration which include establishing trust, possessing a willingness to change, and openness to new ideas. The data also revealed areas of needed growth in collaborative practices which include ensuring teachers share student work and analyze data during collaborative time. Results also indicated that teachers are appreciative of the time given for collaboration with their colleagues, but often there is little administrative involvement and direction for how to use collaborative time.
