Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine various aspects of sight-singing instruction among Georgia public high school chorus teachers. The following research questions guided the study: 1. What are some practices of Georgia public high school choral teachers regarding the instruction of sight-singing? 2. How do Georgia public high school choral teachers assess effective sight-singing instruction? 3. What factors do Georgia public high school choral teachers perceive as barriers to effective sight-singing instruction? 4. What are some attitudes of Georgia public high school choral teachers regarding the instruction of sight-singing? A survey by Kuehne (2003) was adapted for public high school chorus teachers in the state of Georgia. The survey was first piloted among middle school choral teachers, retired high school choral teachers and college choral teachers in order to verify that it was clear and easy to use. In the principal study, the survey was distributed via email to public high school choral teachers. To increase the response rate, several email invitations were sent followed by phone calls. The data were collected and analyzed for frequencies and percentages of responses. In general, teachers demonstrated a belief in sight-singing as an important part of the choral curriculum and most taught sight-singing to every class. Preferred practices included movable-do do solfége with la-based minor, traditional counting for rhythm, and using the piano for scaffolding rather than doubling. Regarding attitudes, most participants felt confident in their own sight-singing capabilities and identified a lack of sufficient class time and a lack of student motivation as barriers to achieving optimal sight-singing results.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research project was to address questions of teacher preparation, pedagogical practices and student outcomes related to the instruction of sight singing in the choral rehearsal by means of a survey of collegiate conductors. Subjects included college or university choral conductors who were active members in the Southern Division of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). A survey was developed for data collection and featured thirty-nine questions categorized by demographics about the conductor, demographics about the college or university, frequency with which a sight-singing method is used, attitudes about sight-singing instruction, and methods of sight-singing assessment. Five purposes served as the basis for creation of this survey and a discussion of the results. The first purpose was to consider if a conductor instructed a choral ensemble in sight singing and the second was to consider the method of sight singing used in a conductor's undergraduate music courses. The third purpose was to consider a conductor's self-rating of sight-singing ability, the rating of ability to teach sight singing and the rating of college preparation to teach sight singing and the fourth was to consider the materials a conductor used to teach sight singing in the choral rehearsal. Finally, the fifth purpose was to consider if a conductor has a method to measure if a choral ensemble's sight-singing skills were improving. Participants were E-Mailed a letter of invitation describing the research project and a link to complete the online survey. Respondents to this survey were distributed quite evenly over eleven States. Most (83.9%) teach in a 4-year college or university. Two-thirds of respondents hold a doctoral degree in music. Overall, 87.2% of respondents indicated excellent or good when asked to rate their ability to teach sight singing. When asked to rate their ability to sight sing, 97.2% chose excellent or good. The responses of excellent and good, however, were indicated by only 46.1% of conductors when asked to rate their college preparation to teach sight singing in the choral rehearsal. An impressive 93.4% of respondents indicated that they believe sight-singing instruction should be a part of the collegiate choral rehearsal, but only 64.5% currently teach the skill with one or more of their ensembles. A group of 40.9% disagree that rehearsal time should be spent preparing repertoire for performance rather than instructing an ensemble in sight singing; 88.6% believe that choirs who sight sing regularly learn music faster. Despite these impressive numbers, 61.8% of respondents strongly agreed or agreed with the statement that they have difficulty finding enough class time to teach sight singing. A large 72.9% of respondents do not have a method to measure if their ensemble's sight-singing skills are improving. Of those who evaluate their ensemble's improvement as a result of sight-singing instruction, 80.5% strongly agree or agree that such instruction has improved their ensemble's ability to sight sing. A larger 88.6% strongly agreed or agreed that such instruction has improved their ensemble's ability to learn new repertoire faster."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to examine methods of sight singing assessment in the high school choral classroom, and to develop and test a tool for student self-assessment of sight singing skills for use in high school choral classes. Problems associated with this study included designing a method for students in a high school choral class to predict and assess their individual abilities in sight singing; to investigate the extent to which students in a high school choral class can detect their own errors and therefore self-correct errors made while sight singing; to determine the reliability between the students’ predictions of their abilities and their actual performance of sight singing exercises; and to prepare students, through the self-assessment process, to successfully sight sing music equivalent to the examples used in the All-Virginia Chorus auditions. The study included the participation of 24 students in a select high school choir who voluntarily participated in four vocal recording sessions. Students were given a sight singing exercise of four measures and asked to predict on a rating scale of 1-5, how well they thought they would be able to sing it. They circled their rating, and recorded the example, rating from 1-5 how well they thought they had sung it. They listened to their recording and circled the errors. Exercises were presented in four separate recording sessions, each exercise increasing in difficulty until they were equivalent in difficulty to exercises used in the All-Virginia Chorus auditions. Data were reviewed by a panel of two high school choral directors. The analysis supports both the hypotheses that: 1. The student can accurately predict their performance before sight singing an exercise. 2. The student can accurately assess their performance after sight singing the exercise. Following all four recording sessions, the tapes were reviewed by the instructor and also by a panel of two independent assessors. The analysis of the data associated with the four recording sessions confirms both hypotheses. The ability of the students to accurately predict their post test score was positively confirmed by the second analysis. Eighty of the possible eighty-six assessor scores were the same or higher than the students—93%. Only six of the 86 (7%) were assessed as lower than predicted by the student.

Nearly all pedagogical approaches emphasize music reading and writing. However, sight singing, a specialized component of music literacy, is a skill that remains a challenge for many young singers. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of vocal improvisation on Kod©Łly-based sight singing instruction for high school choral music students. Based on results of the AMMA (Advanced Measures of Music Audiation, Gordon, 1989), participants (n = 52) were assigned to an experimental group (n = 27) or control group (n = 25). Both groups received sight singing instruction using the Kod©Łly method. The instructional strategies associated with this method included (a) tonic solfa, (b) Curwen hand signs, and (c) Chev©♭ rhythm syllables. The experimental group, however, participated in researcher-compiled vocal improvisation activities for 10-15 minutes of the 30-minute lessons. Improvisation activities included (a) learning selected repertoire by rote, (b) sequentially developing a vocabulary of tonal syllables and rhythmic syllables, (c) improvising with voice and body percussion tonic, dominant, subdominant, and submediant tonal patterns within the context of major and minor tonalities, and (d) improvising with voice and body percussion macrobeat, microbeat, division, elongation, and rest rhythm patterns within the context of duple meter. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to determine if there were statistically significant differences between sight-singing performance pre-assessment and post-assessment, as well as pre-experiment and post-experiment AMMA administration. The Wilcoxon rank sum test was used to determine significant difference between control and experimental groups. Results suggest that regular sight singing instruction using the Kod©Łly method benefited sight singing achievement (pitch accuracy, rhythmic precision, intonation, tempo). Incorporating vocal improvisation helps students build rhythm and tonal vocabulary and aurally explore the functions of harmonic structure. These practices seem to benefit overall music audiation, particularly rhythmic audiation. Survey findings suggest students' perception of their sight singing ability and of their ability to "hear music internally" (audiate) are positively impacted by vocal improvisation practices.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if the implementation of Curwen Hand-Sings five days a week, focusing on pitch recognition and solfege syllables, would increase the proficiency of sight-singing for 9th-12th grade high school students in the general music classroom. During the treatment period, subjects were engaged in sight-singing five days a week. This included the completion of a minimum of three days exercises and one weekly sight-singing quiz. Subjects were given the Solon High School spring choral audition sight-singing assessment as a pretest before the treatment period began and gain as a posttest after the treatment period had concluded. Posttest scores of the treatment class were compared to the posttest scores of the comparison class who had not received the treatment. Weekly test scores from the treatment class were also compared to the weekly test scores from the comparison class. Subjects were given a survey three times during the 9-week treatment period to determine if an implementation dip had occurred in the attitude of students. Teacher anecdotal notes were kept to record the behavior, attitude and participation levels of each subject. The results of this study indicated there was an increase in sight-singing proficiency for all of the involved subjects. Further research should be done to determine if these results would be applicable to the general population.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research was to determine the effectiveness of research-designed high school choral sight-sing exercises that include researcher-designed basic keyboard skills exercises. Fifteen weeks of SATB and SSA sight-singing exercises and basic keyboard skill exercises based on Georgia Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluation guidelines were created and implemented with high school choral students (N= 66). An experimental group (N= 43) received instruction with sight-singing exercises and basic keyboard exercises. A control group (N= 23) received instruction in sight-singing. Students self-administered Vocal Sight-Reading Inventory (VSRI) Form A created by Henry (1999). Following the 15 weeks researcher-designed sight-singing exercises instruction, students self-administered Form B of the VSRI by Henry (1999). The researcher calculated a t-test to determine that the groups were fundamentally the same (t = 1.975, p = .053). Pre-test and post-test mean scores were compared using ANOVA. A significant effect was found for the difference in methods of the experimental and control groups (F (n,64) = 5.230, p = .026). A follow-up t-test was used to examine the mean scores of the post-test. Significance was established at
