Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, testimony by representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in thousands of criminal cases has relied on evidence from Compositional Analysis of Bullet Lead (CABL), a forensic technique that compares the elemental composition of bullets found at a crime scene to the elemental composition of bullets found in a suspect's possession. Different from ballistics techniques that compare striations on the barrel of a gun to those on a recovered bullet, CABL is used when no gun is recovered or when bullets are too small or mangled to observe striations. Forensic Analysis: Weighing Bullet Lead Evidence assesses the scientific validity of CABL, finding that the FBI should use a different statistical analysis for the technique and that, given variations in bullet manufacturing processes, expert witnesses should make clear the very limited conclusions that CABL results can support. The report also recommends that the FBI take additional measures to ensure the validity of CABL results, which include improving documentation, publishing details, and improving on training and oversight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boston Strangler was a notorious serial killer who terrorized Boston, Massachusetts, in the early 1960s. The killer was responsible for the deaths of at least 13 women between June 1962 and January 1964, and possibly more. The victims ranged in age from 19 to 85, and all were strangled with articles of their own clothing. The killer also sexually assaulted some of his victims. The media coverage of the killings and the investigation into the perpetrator became a cultural phenomenon at the time. The case inspired numerous books, movies, and television shows, and it remains one of the most infamous and mysterious murder cases in American history. The identity of the Boston Strangler was the subject of much speculation and investigation for years after the killings. Several men were considered to be suspects, but it was ultimately Albert DeSalvo who confessed to the murders in 1965. DeSalvo was a handyman in the Boston area who had a history of sexual assaults and other crimes. He claimed that he had committed the murders during a series of burglaries, but his confession was later disputed by some experts who argued that he may not have been the true killer. The mystery of the Boston Strangler continues to captivate true crime enthusiasts and historians alike, and the case remains one of the most intriguing and disturbing murder mysteries of the 20th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forensic Psychology is the application of the science and profession of psychology to questions and issues relating to law and the legal system. Today forensic refers to the application of scientific principles and practices to the adversary process where especially knowledgeable scientists play a role. Forensic psychology is the intersection between psychology and the criminal justice system. It involves understanding criminal law in the relevant jurisdictions in order to be able to interact appropriately with judges, attorneys and other legal professionals. The growth of forensic psychology is not without controversy. Some accuse forensic psychologists of being hired guns who can be paid to parrot a certain opinion. Recent court decisions are causing increasing scientific scrutiny of psychological evidence. This in turn is leading to the development of increasingly rigorous training programs, instruments, and procedures that will allow us to withstand such adversarial scrutiny. Further, in order to be a credible witness, the forensic psychologist must understand the philosophy, rules and standards of the judicial system. Primary is an understanding of the adversarial system. There are also rules about hearsay evidence and most importantly, the exclusionary rule. This book provides deep insight into various dimensions of issues relating to the subject.
