Book excerpt: The training effectiveness of the TA-4J advanced jet trainer (Device 2F90) was evaluated by measuring transfer of training from the trainer to the operational situation. Comparisons were made among three experimental and a control group (which received the normal syllabus training). Of the experimental groups, one received training in flight, another group only in the trainer, and the third received only academic training on related principles of the basic instrument portion of the syllabus. Following training, all groups were given a checkride in the aircraft. The relative benefits of the different types of training were evaluated to determine the effectiveness of the trainer in training advanced naval aviation students in the B stage (Basic Instruments) of the NAVJIT (Naval Jet Instrument Trainer) syllabus for the TA-4J aircraft. The study demonstrated that 4.4 hours of aircraft flight time per student could be saved by substituting trainer time for aircraft time in the B stage; a significant cost savings when considering the 450 students that are processed through the school annually.

Book excerpt: This study sought to determine the training effectiveness of the newly installed Device 2F87F Operational Flight Trainer (OFT) as a substitute for the Earlier generation 2F69D OFT used in combination with the P-3 aircraft in training replacement patrol plane pilots. This study provided the opportunity to evaluate the potential of a sophisticated state-of-the-art flight simulator concurrent with its coming on-line in an operational setting. The performance of 27 recent Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) graduates trained in the new OFT was compared with performance of UPT graduates trained under the pre-2F87F curriculum. It was concluded that: The average number of flights required to qualify pilots could be reduced from six to four; Practice landings in the aircraft could be reduced by 16; and The narrow field of view visual system enhances the training capability of the new simulator and appears to meet the requirements for multiengine training.

Book excerpt: This report describes a four-phase transfer to training effectiveness evaluation (T2E2) for Navy Device 2B35. Device 2B35 is a computer-generated image visual display system that is used in the Advanced Jet phase of Navy Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT). The 2B35 is used in integration with the 2F90 simulator for the TA-4J aircraft. In Phase I of the effort, an evaluation plan was developed in which the training effectiveness of Device 2B35 WAS TO BE INVEStigated for the Familiarization, (FAM), Night Familiarization (NF), Weapons (WEP), and Carrier Qualification (CFLP/CQ) stages of Advanced Jet training. The design involved a control group at each stage and two simulator groups at FAM, NF, and CQ stages and one simulator group at the WEP stage. The two simulator groups at FAM, NF, and CQ stages received differing amounts of simulator instruction. Subjects were 60 student Naval aviators undergoing training at Chase Field, Texas. Special objective grade forms were developed for the gathering of both simulator and inflight performance data. Phase II was the data gathering effort, while Phases III and IV involved data analysis and reporting.
