Book excerpt: Stufflebeam's (1969) context, input, process, product (CIPP) model was used to evaluate the Second Step SEL program and its impact on four key social emotional competencies of elementary school students at a North Texas public charter school. These competencies included skills for learning, empathy, emotion management, and problem solving. The researcher sought to answer two research questions: 1. Was the Second Step SEL program successful in addressing the social emotional needs of elementary school students at this North Texas public charter school? 2. What were teachers' perceptions of the implementation process of the Second Step SEL program and what were their suggestions to improve this process? The need for a social emotional learning program (context), investigation of programs available to address that need (input), and specifications of Second Step program implementation (process) were examined. For the product evaluation, quantitative data on 409 students in kindergarten through fifth grade was comprised of scores on the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment-Second Step Edition (DESSA-SSE). Qualitative data consisted of teacher responses on an end-of-year implementation survey. Using a 2x6 mixed analysis of variance, results indicated significant positive effects on each of the four key SEL competencies, as well as the overall composite score. A one-factor ANOVA was used to determine if the program impacted any specific grade level more than others. Findings of the study showed students in Grade 1 made significantly higher gains in every single competency from pre-test to post-test than did students in Grade 3. Grade 1 students also made significantly higher gains than did students in Grade 4 in the areas of skills for learning, empathy, and the composite score, and they made significantly higher gains than did Kindergarten students within the empathy competency. Students in Grade 2 made significantly higher gains than did students in Grade 3 within the competencies of empathy, problem solving, and the social emotional composite. Teachers' perceptions of implementation were positive, with 100% of teachers reporting they understood the goals of the program, were committed to helping students achieve those goals, and believed students benefited from the program. Suggestions for future improvement included extended training opportunities and enhanced parental involvement in the program.

Book excerpt: This study analyzed the implementation of a new program called Second Step with the Kindergarten classroom and determined if there was a correlation between the program, student behavior, teacher preparedness and leadership support. The two groups within the study were elementary school counselors and administrators. Each completed the Second Step implementation survey to determine if there was a correlation between the four constructs; motivate, prepare, train and support, and validate. A number of correlations were found, with the most significant being a very strong negative relationship between the counselor construct (motivate) and administrator constructs (motivate, train and support).

Book excerpt: The reauthorization of the U.S. Elementary and Secondary Education Act, referred to as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), emphasizes evidence-based interventions while giving states and districts new flexibility on the use of federal funds, including funds that could be used to support social and emotional learning (SEL). The authors review recent evidence on U.S.-based SEL interventions for K-12 students to better inform the use of SEL interventions under ESSA. This report discusses the opportunities for supporting SEL under ESSA, the standards of evidence under ESSA, and SEL interventions that meet the standards of evidence and might be eligible for federal funds through ESSA. Federal, state, and district education policymakers can use this report to identify relevant, evidence-based SEL interventions that meet their local needs. A companion volume (available on the website) catalogues these interventions in more detail and outlines the research that has examined them.

The study was motivated by the researcher’s experience of seeing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, online schooling and of local community unrest on the students. The design included first asking participants to take a survey for the purpose of obtaining baseline data on their emotion management and problemsolving skills. Next, the researcher implemented eight weeks of a social emotional established curriculum called, Second Step in an Upper Elementary Montessori classroom. Throughout the study, the researcher collected data on students’ struggles with solving problems independently with a basic quantitative instrument and using a qualitative narrative instrument. Finally at the close of the eight-week study, the students took a post-survey to determine if the program had an impact on the students’ ability to problem solve and manage their emotions. However, due to limitations of the study, the researcher could not draw specific conclusions yet the study did yield other benefits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article focuses attention on a critical need for more evidence-based social emotional learning (SEL) programs for middle school students. First, we explore the definition of SEL, pointing out how it has evolved as our world has changed. We review key SEL domains and skills and describe universal school-based SEL programming as one approach to fostering students’ SEL competencies. We highlight the ongoing need for evidence-based middle school SEL programs by demonstrating how few programs meet the rigorous What Works Clearinghouse (WWC), Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), and Blueprints standards for evidence. We extend our summary of these programs by noting that even when positive effects have been demonstrated, these effects were often observed in a single domain, such as substance use, or outnumbered by null effects, which undermines efforts to understand program effectiveness. We conclude by considering the unique developmental needs of early adolescents and providing recommendations for the development or refinement of SEL programs that target middle school students

Specifically, the programs of Second Step: A Violence Prevention Program and Responsive Classroom were researched and studies measuring their success in both academic and behavioral areas were examined. In addition, teachers of the Amery School District were surveyed about their experiences regarding a need for such programming, and the effectiveness of the current programs being used in the district. According to the significant research available, there is ample evidence of both academic and behavioral progress to support the inclusion of social and emotional learning in elementary classrooms. The results of this survey clearly show that the educators in Amery believe that there is a need for social and emotional learning and that such instruction contributes positively to both the learning environment and academic success.

Book excerpt: This study aimed to analyze the impact a social-emotional learning program had on middle school behavior and stakeholder perception. An SEL program was implemented at a middle school as an intervention program to strengthen self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, social awareness, and relationship-building. SEL programs provide coping strategies to all students, especially those that have experienced trauma. The participants in this study were sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students from an inner-city middle school in Tennessee. The participants completed a pretest before implementing Second Step's social-emotional learning program. The treatment school implemented the SEL program weekly for ten weeks. The researcher compared the pretest and posttest scores using the Tennessee State Climate Survey for students and staff to analyze the results.

Book excerpt: Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Research shows that social and emotional skills are prerequisite to the thinking and learning skills that comprise the time-honored academic focus of education. A study published in 2015 found significant correlations between SEL skills of children in kindergarten and important outcomes when these kindergartners became young adults, including differences in mental health, substance abuse, criminal activity, education, and employment. This 6-page, quick-reference laminated guide by Marc Brackett and colleagues at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, provides educators with an introduction to SEL, guidelines for effective implementation of SEL in your classroom and school, an introduction to the RULER approach to SEL, strategies to promote your own social and emotional wellbeing, and a classroom SEL evaluation tool.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on social and emotional learning (SEL) from a variety of perspectives. The goal of the volume is to offer a clear framing of SEL in relation to other related out-of-school time concepts and initiatives. SEL has gained popularity as a concept in recent years and there remains confusion as well as great interest in the meaning and implementation of SEL in OST. Policymakers, researchers, and practitioners are pursuing work related to SEL in OST and this volume offers an opportunity to share that work by: • Defining and explaining SEL in a variety of out of school contexts and highlighting opportunities for integration and alignment with other fields (e.g., formal education) • Clarifying the language and framework confusion and honoring the field’s foundation in thinking about social and emotional development through high quality youth development practice • Sharing information about current trends and new developments and how that work is shaping the field across the developmental continuum • Making the research to practice connection by including in each chapter foundational research on the topic, evidence of effective efforts, and practical implications • Offering recommendations for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers related to SEL in OST settings ENDORSEMENTS "The social and emotional development of our nation's youth is a common, essential concern of those working in school and out of school. This volume will be the catalyst for long overdue conversation, collaboration, and synergy. It is essential reading for practitioners, researchers, and policy makers in both contexts who are concerned with preparing children for the tests of life, and not a life of tests." ~ Maurice J. Elias, Ph.D., Rutgers University, Co-director, Academy for Social-Emotional Learning in Schools and After School Settings "Having spent all of my adult life working with, and advocating for, high-quality youth programming, I understand the critical role out-of-school-time (OST) programs play in the social and emotional development of young people. As the Executive Director of the New York State Network for Youth Success, I am thrilled to see such a comprehensive view of current best practices and research on social-emotional learning (SEL) in OST programs. It is exciting and encouraging to see so much documented progress with SEL in OST condensed into one comprehensive book that furthers understanding of both research-informed practices and systems building around policy. This book, edited by two leading researchers in the field, Elizabeth Devaney and Deborah Moroney, should be required reading for any practitioners, policy makers, and educators in the field. Both the editors' and contributors' emphasis on making SEL an "intentional practice" is the exact conversation we all should be having right now." ~ Kelly Malone Sturgis, Executive Director, New York State Network for Youth Success "Social Emotional Learning and Out-Of-School-Time: Foundations and Futures is an extremely important and timely publication. The scope and depth of this work makes it a must read for any serious out-of-school-time or K-12 educator. In 2014 California identified social emotional learning as the most promising bridge to bring coherence between expanded learning programs and the school day. (A Vision for Expanded Learning in California – Strategic Plan 2014-2016) I have found this to be the exact case. All across California, school day and out-of-school-time professionals are having deep and authentic conversations about youth centered collaborative efforts. We also know that providing social emotional development opportunities is a corner stone for any high quality out-of-school-time program. I plan to share this publication widely with K-12 educators, policy makers, parents and so many others." ~ Michael Funk, Director, Expanded Learning Division, California Department of Education Book reviews: Journal of Youth Development: Book Review—Social and Emotional Learning in Out-of-School-Time: Foundations and Futures Youth Today: Outstanding Insights About SEL in OST in Major Book

Book excerpt: Social emotional learning (SEL) promotes self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, positive relationships, responsible decision-making, and improved attitudes about self, others, and school. It is a critical component of education because social emotional competencies are a strong predictor of academic achievement and success beyond school. The purpose of this project is to create a professional development training that will aid teachers at a local elementary school implement the SEL program Second Step to support their students' social emotional development. Data was collected a survey on teachers' knowledge of SEL and the Second Step program. Participation was voluntary and twenty-three of the thirty classroom teachers at H. Allen Hight Elementary School responded. Results of this survey were analyzed and used to design a professional development (PD) training for those teachers to support their knowledge of SEL, and specifically, their implementation of the Second Step program. Seven of the thirty teachers attended the PD and provided verbal feedback at the end of the training. There was consensus amongst the participants that behavior was a serious issue at the school and that many students needed social and emotional support, however they had differing opinions for why behavior was a serious issue. Some participants expressed frustration, first that the type of support and training they received at the PD was not provided by the administration, and second, that more of their colleagues had not attended the PD since most of the staff had stated repeatedly that behavior was a school-wide problem. Several participants requested additional resources such as supplemental materials found on the Second Step website and the literature used to provide an overview of SEL during the PD, and stated that additional training on the subject, or collaborative planning time with colleagues, would be beneficial.
