Book excerpt: Wetland restoration has numerous potential ecological and societal benefits, one of which is the retention of phosphorus (P) and consequent protection of downstream water bodies from eutrophication. Past studies focused on influents to and effluents from a variety of wetland types have documented net P retention. However, some wetland systems are less effective at P capture and wetland P retention capacity can change over time. Certain wetland types - especially riparian wetlands restored on former agricultural land - remain understudied. In Vermont, most of the over 4000 potential wetland restoration sites in the Lake Champlain Basin are located on current or former agricultural fields, and little information is available to inform estimates of net P retention (i.e., P balances) for such sites. In this dissertation, I examined various factors affecting P balances in riparian wetlands restored on historically farmed soils of Vermont. P balance in a riparian wetland is largely a function of particulate P capture (e.g., deposition of particle-attached P during floods) and soluble reactive P (SRP) loss (e.g., release of SRP from soils). In Chapter 1, I determined the threshold in P saturation ratio (PSR) for riparian soils in Vermont, enabling calculation of a soil P storage capacity (SPSC) metric. I then quantified soil SRP release using intact soil core incubations with simulated floods for sites ranging from active farms to mature wetlands and confirmed that PSR, SPSC, and other soil parameters were strong predictors of SRP loss during inundation. In Chapter 2, I monitored P dynamics in soil, water, and vegetation at three restored riparian wetlands on former agricultural land in the Lake Champlain Basin, focusing on factors that affect P deposition and SRP release. At wetland sampling plots, observed inorganic sediment gain and decreased water column total suspended solids concentrations relative to the river/inflow indicated that wetlands were effectively trapping particles. Accretion of inorganic P (i.e., best estimate for mineral P deposited during floods) ranged from 0.1 to 1 g P m-2 yr-1 depending on site and elevation. Elevated SRP concentrations in wetland water columns relative to the river sources indicated internal SRP release from soils, and high frequency data indicated that factors such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, and primary production likely influence SRP dynamics. In Chapter 3, I developed a wetland P dynamics model that can generate estimates of net P retention from a simple set of soil and hydrologic inputs, considering both P deposition and SRP release. For proof of concept, I simulated the wetlands monitored in Chapter 2 using two years of monitoring data and a set of model scenarios. I found that net total P balance was typically positive (-0.04 to 0.24 g P m-2 yr-1), with average P retention efficiency of ~40%, though there was substantial variability depending on site and scenario. P retention efficiency was especially sensitive to changes in influent P and total suspended solids concentrations, with the greatest net P retention predicted for systems receiving influent floodwater with high P concentrations. Reduction of influent SRP concentrations promoted SRP release from soils, suggesting that legacy soil P in the wetlands might cause a time lag between the adoption of upstream best management practices and reduction in downstream SRP concentrations. In the future, the model developed in Chapter 3 can be applied more broadly to investigate the potential P retention benefits of wetland restoration at candidate sites across Vermont. Together, the information put forth by this dissertation provides a suite of data and tools that researchers and managers can use to enhance the P retention benefits of riparian wetland restoration.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Nutrient export from agricultural activities in the Lake Okeechobee watershed has contributed to eutrophication of the Lake and regulatory implementation of a phosphorus (P) Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) rule. Historically, anthropogenic manipulation of hydrology lowered water tables, creating improved conditions for upland forage grass production. This action also increased runoff rates and P loading to the Lake. Hydrologic restoration of historically isolated wetlands within the watershed is a proposed best management practice (BMP) to increase P retention capacities of these wetlands. However, longer hydroperiods could potentially decrease pasture productivity, and as a consequence, adversely affect the economic viability of the cattle industry in the region. Previous studies have shown that soils under longer hydroperiods in the Okeechobee watershed have greater P storage potential than surrounding upland soils. This research primarily focuses on the vegetative component of P storage in pasture wetlands. The objectives were to evaluate biomass production and P storage dynamics in vegetation under various hydroperiods and to determine the efficacy of using an alternative forage grass species to maintain pasture productivity after wetland restoration. Four isolated wetlands in Okeechobee County, Florida were sampled in November, 2004, March, 2005 and July 2005. In this study, total P storage in wetlands (with a 50 m upland buffer) included soil (10cm depth), below ground biomass (BGB), above ground biomass (AGB) and litter components.

Book excerpt: Agricultural nutrient loss in the Western Lake Erie Basin (WLEB) leads to elevated nutrient levels in Lake Erie, resulting in harmful algal blooms and anoxic conditions, decreased fish populations, and reduced recreation and tourism revenues. To combat this issue, the Ohio Phosphorus Task Force set a goal to decrease the phosphorus (P) load to the WLEB by 40% from 2008 spring loads. To meet this goal, efforts are underway to minimize the amount of P transported from agricultural fields to surface water using best management practices (BMPs). While many BMPs aim to decrease P loss by optimizing agricultural nutrient usage, some fields continue to have elevated soil test phosphorus (STP) levels even when nutrients have not been applied for decades. These fields, referred to as legacy P fields, contain more P within the soil profile than agronomically necessary and have substantial nutrient runoff potential. Because these sites disproportionately contribute to nutrient runoff, it is important to determine what variables impact and how best to manage nutrient loss from legacy P fields. Rainfall depth and intensity have been identified as driving factors causing P runoff from fields within agronomic STP levels. Better knowledge of the impact of precipitation and temperature on runoff from legacy P fields will improve management to minimize nutrient loss from these unique settings. This is especially valuable information as production and water quality management adaptations are made in reaction to climate change. To determine how weather variability impacts P runoff from legacy P fields, water quality and water quantity data was collected at 11 fields with Mehlich-3 P STP > 100 mg/kg in northwest Ohio for a total of 18.5 site-years, during which time 477 storm events each with > 6.35 mm (0.25 in) of precipitation were monitored. This study found that average nutrient concentrations within tile discharge from legacy P fields were 2.4 times (total P; TP) and 4-5 times (dissolved reactive P; DRP) larger than the equivalent on fields with agronomically appropriate STP (i.e., agronomic fields). Additionally, legacy P fields behaved similarly to agronomic fields during precipitation events: rainfall amount was the primary climatic variable affecting TP and DRP loads while tile discharge and nitrate loads were both largely affected by rainfall amount and event duration. By addressing fundamental questions about interactions between elevated STP fields, climate, and nutrient transformation and transport, this study provides greater insight to the significance of legacy P fields on water quality issues and therefore informs decisions on BMP selection and design. Stacked BMPs on fields with high nutrient loss potential are hypothesized to improve quality of runoff more than non-targeted or single practices. To measure the effectiveness of stacked conservation practices on a legacy P field, this study analyzed nutrient loss from a western Ohio field for nearly two years. The targeted subsurface tile drained 4.5 ha (11.1 acres) of the field to the first BMP, a ditch-style P removal structure (PRS) filled with electric arc furnace steel slag. The effluent from the PRS then discharged into a second BMP: a constructed wetland. Discharge moving through the stacked practices was monitored with bubbler flow meters and area velocity sensors and water samples were collected using automated water samplers at the inflows and outflows of each BMP. Between the inlet and outlet of the PRS, there was a 27% reduction in TP concentration and an 18% increase in DRP concentration. The wetland produced statistically significant and consistent reductions of TP loading and DRP loading by 30% and 18%, respectively. Although the PRS did not perform as designed, the stacked PRS and wetland in series had overall load reductions of TP (36%) and DRP (18%). The analysis of these stacked practices demonstrates that although one of the two BMPs performed poorly, there is a benefit to redundant designs, which provides insight on how to best implement BMPs on agricultural lands.

The SPSC calculated from P, Fe and Al using oxalate extractant was related to water-soluble P and equilibrium P concentrations (EPC0) obtained from traditional Langmuir isotherms. Plant P availability was determined using iron-oxide impregnated filter paper (FeO-P).
