Book excerpt: The recent volatility of crude oil prices has raised concerns over the volume of oil which can be expected to be discovered in the various supply regions in Canada. This study focuses on the likely implication of crude oil volatility on future oil supply from Saskatchewan. The study constructed a model to help analyze the effects of price changes on established reserves, and also reserve additions from both new discoveries and extensions of older pools. The model uses the provincial well data base and research on the royalty rates, taxes, and operation costs in Saskatchewan to analyze the effects of price changes on established reserves, defined as short-run supply, over a 19-year period. The long-run analysis includes both current established reserves and reserves which are likely to be discovered in the future.

Book excerpt: This study examines the existing situation relating to crude oil supply and refined petroleum product demand in Canada and, based on reasonable assumptions regarding future energy prices and economic development, provides an analysis of likely future paths of crude oil supply-demand balances. An assessment is conducted of conventional, nonconventional and frontier sources of crude oil supply, along with an evaluation of the oil megaproject agreements announced in 1988. The supply projections are set against a forecast of Canadian refined petroleum product demand and the resulting light and heavy oil balances are examined.

Knowledge about costs is important in helping to understand the current position of producers within the industry. In the eyes of the producers, the lower the costs the more profitable they will become given the price of crude. This thesis focuses on an economic analysis of crude oil exploration in Saskatchewan and Alberta. In a competitive market, the producers require estimates of finding costs in both regions. The public policies that are designed to encourage crude exploration also rely heavily on reliable estimates of these costs. The results show that Saskatchewans per-unit finding cost is significantly lower than Albertas in spite of the geological differences between the two provinces. The finding costs are estimated by using a methodology (Uhler 1979) that has been widely accepted within economic literature of non-renewable resources. The results support the hypothesis that finding costs in both regions are increasing and the argument that these costs will converge in the long-run, except for the last six years of the analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Another important component affecting the price of natural gas in the short term is the level of natural gas inventories, providing a vital component of the North American natural gas transmission and distribution system. [...] Natural gas storage facilities are essential to balance the dramatic divergence between the seasonal and daily variability of gas consumption and the inflexibility of gas production in North America. [...] In Canada, tight oil plays in the WCSB include the Cardium, the Viking formation, the Slave Point and the most prolific, the Bakken Shale. [...] The former analyzed the average oil supply cost of new oil wells drilled in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, providing an indication of economic viability of oil production in each study area. [...] The latter, on the other hand, investigated the production potential in western Canada, as well as calculated the economic impacts associated with the aforementioned drilling and future production forecast for Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

Book excerpt: Provides a brief discussion of world oil market developments since the early 1970s, identifying the fundamental characteristics and features of the market through to the end of this century. It also examines the history and current structure of world oil demand, analyzed in terms of demand for crude oil products in the various regions. A number of key factors and fundamental trends in crude oil consumption are identified, which can be expected to play an important role in future oil demand. In addition, the study provides an examination of the history and current structure of world crude oil supply, emphasizing the methodology employed in representing crude oil production, reserves additions and productive capacity development within the analytical framework. A series of sensitivity cases are presented together with the reference case crude oil market scenario generated by the integration of the demand- and supply-side analyses. Finally, the study's authors draw together the critical conclusions arising from the analysis.
