This book was released on 2005 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A benthic macroinvertebrate survey was conducted on the Butternut Creek, Otsego County, New York. Samples were collected from 18 sites between Basswood Pond and the confluence of Butternut Creek and the Unadilla River from 1 July 2002 to 15 July 2002. Assessments of physical habitat (PHA), family biotic index (FBI), percent model affinity (PMA), and percent Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (%EPT) were made at each site. Mean assessment results indicate that the habitat and water quality of Butternut Creek is in good condition. PHA results of 94.17 (+/- 19.42) indicate optimal habitat. Percent EPT values of 50.56 (+/- 20.98) are in the non-impacted range. FBI data averages 4.26 (+/- 1.16) revealing a non-impacted condition. A PMA of 62.61% (+/- 13.20) places the water quality in the slightly impacted range. The benthic community at each site was broken down according to functional feeding group (FFG). A significant decline in shredder populations was found as sampling proceeded down the course of the stream. No relationship was found between location on the stream and PHA. PHA did not have a significant effect on FBI, PMA or %EPT scores at each site.

Book excerpt: The city of Pittsburgh and surrounding area of southwestern Pennsylvania face complex water quality problems, due in large part to aging wastewater infrastructures that cannot handle sewer overflows and stormwater runoff, especially during wet weather. Other problems such as acid mine drainage are a legacy of the region's past coal mining, heavy industry, and manufacturing economy. Currently, water planning and management in southwestern Pennsylvania is highly fragmented; federal and state governments, 11 counties, hundreds of municipalities, and other entities all play roles, but with little coordination or cooperation. The report finds that a comprehensive, watershed-based approach is needed to effectively meet water quality standards throughout the region in the most cost-effective manner. The report outlines both technical and institutional alternatives to consider in the development and implementation of such an approach.

Book excerpt: Benthic macroinvertebrate diversity influences stream food web dynamics, nutrient cycling and material exchange between the benthos and the water column. Stream bioassessment has moved to the forefront of water quality monitoring in terms of benthic macroinvertebrate diversity in the recent past. The objectives of this study were to determine optimum subsample size and level of taxonomic resolution necessary to accurately and precisely describe macroinvertebrate diversity in streams flowing in the Piedmont province of the James River watershed in Virginia. Forty-nine sampling sites were selected from streams within the Piedmont Physiographic Province of the James River watershed. Ten sites were randomly selected to have all macroinvertebrates in the sample identified to the genus level whenever possible. Optimum subsampling intensities and Virginia Stream Condition Index (VSCI) metrics and scores were determined. For samples with the total number of individuals at less than 500, the genus level of taxonomy provided lower overall optimum subsampling intensities. However, for samples with total individuals over 1000, optimum subsampling intensities at the genus level of taxonomy were higher than the family level for more than 50% of the metrics. For both family and genus levels of taxonomy, the majority of optimum subsampling intensities were well over 50% of the total individuals in the sample, with some as high as 100% of the individuals. While optimum subsampling intensities were valuable in comparing family and genus level taxonomy, they are not reasonable for stream bioassessment protocols; the cost:benefit ratio would be highly unbalanced. A minimum subsample size of 200 individuals is optimum for determining VSCI scores, while optimum taxonomic resolution is dependent on several factors. Thus, the level of taxonomic resolution for a particular study should be determined by the study objectives, level of site impairment and sample size.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the benthic macroinvertebrate communities of Looney Creek, a headwater tributary of the Poor Fork of the Cumberland River which originates on Black Mountain in Harlan County, Kentucky. Background research indicates that impacts to Looney Creek have included mining, logging, and improper management of wastewater, flow alteration and to some degree, urban runoff. These impacts have been documented since around 1917. The objectives of this project were to (a) determine the overall biological integrity of Looney Creek, (b) assess the effects of water conditions on benthic macroinvertebrates that are sensitive to nonpoint source pollution (NPS), (c) identify the sites most impacted by NPS pollution, (d) compare the biological metrics of the monitoring stations over one year, and (e) to compare the biological metrics of the upper two sites and the lower sites to the reference Macroinvertebrate Biotic Index (MBI) as defined by Kentucky Division of Water, Standard Operating Procedures (KDOW 2008). Biological investigations included two upstream and two downstream macroinvertebrate sites which were sampled three times (spring, summer, and fall of 2008), and followed the semi-quantitative and qualitative sampling methodology decribed in the (KDOW 2008). A habitat assessment and a MBI were determined for each study site. Scores indicated seasonal differences in MBI metrics which could be influenced by life history strategies of individual species. The overall average MBI results upstream sites indicate an excellent-good water quality designation and poor-fair for the downstream sites. Site 1 appeared to be the most impacted by NPS with the lowest biotic metrics. Overall, Looney Creek Site 4 appeared to be the least impacted by human activities. This is demonstrated through the low numbers of pollution tolerant individuals, the lowest mHBI (Modified Hilsenhoff Biotic Index), diverse functional feeding groups, and the highest habitat assessment scores.
