Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-methods study is to evaluate the impact of Morrison High School’s ninth grade transition program, the Freshman Academy, on student outcomes. Based on the outcomes, decisions will be made to determine if the Freshman Academy is meeting students’ needs or if the program elements need to be revisited to improve student achievement. Participants included teachers, school counselors, and administrators at Morrison High School in southeastern Virginia. The study employed the product component of the CIPP model of program evaluation to guide the data collection and to determine the merit, worth, and significance of the program. Quantitative data were collected using student outcome data based on GPA, attendance rates, number of discipline referrals, pass rates on Virginia Standards of Learning End of Course tests, and credits earned. Qualitative data were collected based on teacher, school counselor, and administrator interviews. Successes and challenges of the program as well as areas of recommended improvement are detailed in this study. Analysis of student outcome data revealed that students participating in the program are consistently meeting the benchmark intended outcomes for attendance, discipline, and credits earned and most students are passing the Algebra I and World Geography SOLs during the last year included in this study. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of the program elements can only assist teams in providing stronger transition programs to help students achieve the intended outcomes. Recommendations for future research and program improvement include collaboration between the Freshman Academy teachers and administrators with the eighth grade teachers and administrators at the feeder middle schools, developing a summer bridge program to target at-risk students, and increasing parental involvement and seeking their feedback on the Freshman Academy.

Despite sweeping educational reforms, many students are leaving high school without graduating. Local school districts are struggling to redesign high schools to provide the educational programs necessary for at-risk studentsâ success. Creating smaller learning communities and developing transition programs have shown success in addressing these problems. Sustained research shows promise in minimizing the effects of the transition process and adds to the body of knowledge. A case study approach using archival data was used to explore the differences in three Bearcat âPRIDEâ treatment groups and their 8th (pre-treatment) and 9th (post-treatment) grade measures. Results of this study suggested students who participated in the Bearcat âPRIDEâ program showed greater success in academic performance, reduced disciplinary actions, increased school attendance, and participation in extra-curricular activities of their 8th (pre-treatment) and 9th (post-treatment) grade measures.

This study also examined the differential effects of student outcomes by student characteristics to include, sex, race, previous middle school, economic status, disability status, and proficiency in English. There were no significant differences between participant and control groups in the bivariate analysis. There were limited findings when considering students characteristics. There were main effects on Earth Science and World Geography test scores when previous middle school was held as a constant, and there was a main effect on the Earth Science test when disability status was held as a constant. There were two interaction effects. One of these was a negative effect in which males in the participant group actually scored worse on the Algebra I SOL score than did males in the control group. The other interaction effect was that black students in the participant group had fewer disciplinary incidents than did black students in the control group.

The study examined the effectiveness of the supports schools provide under the TNGTI grant program. Specifically, the study compared the performance of students who participated in the TNGTI summer transition program to similar students who did not participate using a propensity score stratification approach. Students' ninth grade attendance and performance on math and reading Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skill (TAKS) assessments were the outcomes of interest. In addition, the authors examined the theory that the TNGTI program would improve student academic performance by increasing their ninth grade attendance by examining whether ninth grade attendance was a mediator for academic achievement.

Prior to rolling out the program statewide, TEA wanted to understand the effect of the program on student achievement. This is due to the immediate and long-term ramifications that students incur as a result of a proper transition to high school, or lack thereof. While considering the importance of the transition, there are several elements that contribute to positive academic outcomes. For the purpose of this study, the characteristics being considered, were structures, relationships, and programs. Structures includes elements such as the district organization, the building systems and policies, and the daily operations. When discussing relationships, this includes the emphasis that is placed on positive interactions between stakeholders. This includes rapport between students and their peers, parents, staff, and community members. It also encompasses relationships between teachers and their colleagues, as well as their affiliations and involvement with parents and community members. Finally, programs were investigated. This includes preparations at the middle school level, programming that is available at the high school level, and finally, structures that are supportive of the transition at the high school level. This study collected participant information through an electronic survey and was designed to investigate the perceptions of ninth-grade staff members regarding the influence that these three elements have on ninth-grade students. The sample of 47 participants includes administrators, support staff, and teachers who work directly with ninth-grade students. I conducted independent t-tests and one-way ANOVAs to determine statistically significant differences in participant responses participants while considering for demographics. There were three key takeaways from this study regarding factors which positively influence the transition to high school. These elements include creating a developmentally responsive environment for ninth-grade students to develop critical skills for high school success, without penalty or repercussions. This also includes an emphasis on relationships with stakeholders, with the goal of collectively supporting incoming high school students. Finally, the importance of collaborating among stakeholders emerged as a critical element to supporting these relationships, ensuring all stakeholders understood how and when to support their shared ninth-grade students.

The ninth grade is a pivotal year that determines which students will prevail and which students will fail to finish high school. It is essential that schools put in place components that ease the transition into high school and provide ongoing support. Two measuring instruments were used by the researcher, a two-part student survey, and focus groups involving students in the ninth grade and ninth grade teachers. The data collected from both instruments were tabulated and common themes were identified. Results indicated that the practices in place in their school had a positive impact on student behavior and their attitude towards school. Recommendations for further research include (a) continue with a multi-year study to increase validity and identify trends or patterns; (b) conduct research to determine parental perceptions of the transition process; and (c) involve other high schools in the district to gain additional data to establish significance.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the need for an academic transition program at the beginning of the high school experience for 90 to 100 critical - need ninth grade students at North Thurston High School in Lacey, Washington. Opinions of ninth and twelfth grade high school students with a high grade point average and those with a low grade point average were measured to determine the justification for such a program. In order to determine whether or not there were differences of opinions it was necessary to pinpoint the differences between the two groups. A thirty - one item survey utilizing a Likert type scale was developed to assess the opinions of both groups of students. The Likert type scale was chosen because it would be more adequate for the measurement of degrees of opinion concerning topics or issues to be presented to the high school students sampled-in the study. The thirty - one item survey was administered to a ninth grade population of approximately four hundred and twenty-five students and a twelfth grade population of approximately three hundred and fifty students at North Thurston High School. T-scores on the two groups were used to determine if significance existed between the means of the two groups. Factors analysis was then selected to cluster survey items resulting in the formation of ten factors. The utilization of a two by two ANOVA design then determined that significant difference existed in three of the ten factors. On the basis of the data collected it can be concluded that the hypothesis cannot be rejected. The study requires the necessity of an academic entry program for critical - need ninth grade students. The evidence suggests that the middle level block program approach of teachers, administrators, and support staff might be the most appropriate curriculum arrangement. Furthermore, such a curriculum arrangement with need to give attention to the various ways of knowing teenagers and seriously engaging them in school studies, be less restricted /dominated by the textbook, become less fragmented into separated subjects include a study skills program oriented to the unique needs of the critical - need ninth grade students, enlist the involvement of teachers who enjoy teaching ninth graders, and institute an advisor - advisee program in which teachers will fulfill multiple obligations (teacher - counselor - advisor - manager). It can be concluded that critical - need ninth grade students would benefit from such an creative alternative to present high school curriculum organization and insturction.

The intended contribution of this study was to describe any effect the transition program might have towards academic achievement on the English I end-of-course exam and the accumulation of total academic credits to be applied towards promotion into the tenth grade.--The research questions providing a research framework for the study were: How did the target group's academic achievement compare to an earlier group who had been socially promoted but had not participated in the summer transition program? How did the target group perform on the English I end-of-course exam as compared to the Education Value-Added Assessment System prediction? What explanations were there for the performances described in Questions 1 and 2? What attitude changes toward school had students undergone in the year since social promotion? What supports were helpful in effecting academic and attitudinal improvement in the targeted ninth-grade group?--Quantitative data was gathered to answer the first two research questions. EOC scores of the non-transition program group were compared to EOC scores of the transition program group using SPSS to compute central tendency statistics of mean, median, and mode. EVAAS predicted scores of the transition program group were compared to actual achievement scores by computing central tendency statistics of mean, median, and mode using SPSS. Answers to the last three questions were gleaned through student questionnaires (with both a closed-option quantitative section and an open-option qualitative section) and focus group interviews with teachers who had taught in the transition program and students who had participated in the program. Themes from the open-ended questionnaire and the focus groups were elicited through a frequency and strength computation. Responses to the five questions were triangulated to determine the overall effectiveness of the transition program.--Data demonstrated the transition program implemented in this study was an effective one. Student participants were more successful on the English I end-of-course exam than predicted by the EVAAS system, scored at a higher level of achievement than the nonparticipating group of students, as well as accumulated more high school credits necessary for promotion to the tenth grade. Qualitative data demonstrated that student attitudes were changed in a positive manner regarding math and reading skills, organization skills, time-management skills, and decision-making skills.

Book excerpt: This causal-comparative study sought to identify the effects of attending a summer school transition program and students' grade levels (seventh v. eighth v. ninth) on students' grades (based on course failures), attendance (based on students' absences), and behavior (based on number of behavioral office referrals). The students who participated in this study were identified as at-risk during one of three educational transitions: from elementary school to middle school, between seventh and eighth grade in the middle school, and from middle school to high school. As part of their elementary school to middle school, intra-middle school, or middle school to high school transition program, students in the treatment group participated in a three-week summer program with academic classes in math, reading, and science, which their upcoming grade-level teacher taught. The goals of the summer transition program include familiarizing students with new academic structures and teacher expectations as well as previewing curriculum material for the upcoming school year. In order to compare the groups' data, the researcher used the chi-square analysis. While there was no change in students' grades or behavior related to participation in the summer transition program, statistically significant relationships did exist between grade level and attendance for eight and ninth grade students, as well as students who did not attend the summer school transition program. Grade level did not have a significant impact on the change in students' grades or behavior from one year to the next.
