Book excerpt: The rediscovery and restitution of William Hazlitt as a canonical Romantic author has been among the latest and most significant developments in present-day Romantic studies. This volume, a collection of previously unpublished essays by the foremost scholars in the field presents Hazlitt as a philosophical, and not simply a 'familiar' essayist. It offers a comprehensive statement of the significance and transmission of Hazlitt's philosophical principles, in his own work and in that of his contemporaries and succeeding writers. This book is an essential contribution to a vital new aspect of Romantic studies and shows Hazlitt to be, as his memorial claims, 'The first (unanswered) Metaphysician of the age'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the American War of Independence and the French Revolution, ideas of the 'Natural Rights of Man' (later distinguished into particular issues like rights of association, rights of women, slaves, children and animals) were publicly debated in England. Literary figures like Wollstonecraft, Godwin, Thelwall, Blake and Wordsworth reflected these struggles in their poetry and fiction. With the seminal influences of John Locke and Rousseau, these and many other writers laid for high Romantic Literature foundations that were not so much aesthetic as moral and political. This new study by R.S. White provides a reinterpretation of the Enlightenment as it is currently understood.

Book Synopsis Derrida and Disinterest by : Sean Gaston
Download or read book Derrida and Disinterest written by Sean Gaston and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-04-14 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disinterest has been a major concept in Western philosophy since Descartes. Its desirability and importance have been disputed, and its deifinition reworked. by such pivotal figures as Nietzsche, Shaftesbury, Locke and Kant. In this groundbreaking book, Sean Gaston looks at the treatment of disinterest in the work of two major modern Continental philosophers: Jacques Derrida and Emmanuel Levinas. He identifies both as part of a tradition, obscured since the eighteenth-century, that takes disinterest to be the opposite of self-interest, rather than the absence of all interest. Such a tradition locates disinterest at the centre of thinking about ethics. The book argues that disinterest plays a signifcant role in the philosophy of both thinkers and in the dialogue between their work. In so doing it sheds new light on their respective contributions to moral and political philosophy. Moreover, it traces the history of disinterest in Western philosophy from Descartes to Derrida, taking contributions and in the of major philosopher in both the analytic, Anglo-American and Continental traditions: Locke; Shaftesbury; Hume; Smith; Nietzsche; Kant; Hegel; Heidegger. Derrida and Disinterest offers a new reading of Derrida, a stimulating account of the role and importance of disinterest in the history of Western philosophy and a provocative and original contribution to Continental ethics.

Book Synopsis The Complete Poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley by : Percy Bysshe Shelley
Download or read book The Complete Poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley written by Percy Bysshe Shelley and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2005-01-21 with total page 917 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winners of an Honorable Mention from the Modern Language Association's Prize for a Distinguished Scholarly Edition Writing to his publisher in 1813, Shelley expressed the hope that two of his major works "should form one volume"; nearly two centuries later, the second volume of the Johns Hopkins edition of The Complete Poetry fulfills that wish for the first time. This volume collects two important pieces: Queen Mab and The Esdaile Notebook. Privately issued in 1813, Queen Mab was perhaps Shelley's most intellectually ambitious work, articulating his views of science, politics, history, religion, society, and individual human relations. Subtitled A Philosophical Poem: With Notes, it became his most influential—and pirated—poem during much of the nineteenth century, a favorite among reformers and radicals. The Esdaile Notebook, a cycle of fifty-eight early poems, exhibits an astonishing range of verse forms. Unpublished until 1964, this sequence is vital in understanding how the poet mastered his craft. As in the acclaimed first volume, these works have been critically edited by Donald H. Reiman and Neil Fraistat. The poems are presented as Shelley intended, with textual variants included in footnotes. Following the poems are extensive discussions of the circumstances of their composition and the influences they reflect; their publication or circulation by other means; their reception at the time of publication and in the decades since; their re-publication, both authorized and unauthorized; and their place in Shelley's intellectual and aesthetic development.

Book Synopsis Hazlitt - Selected Essays by : George Sampson
Download or read book Hazlitt - Selected Essays written by George Sampson and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of essays by William Hazlitt. They were collected this form by George Sampson and first published by in 1917. This anthology includes all of Hazlitt’s essays from "The Round Table" to the posthumous pieces. The first four essays show him as the 'Boswell of Lamb' and the candid friend of Wordsworth and Coleridge. The next three are an extension of this group, forming a pleasant parallel to 'Lamb’s Detached Thoughts on Books and Reading' and his delightful essays on the old actors. The last three show us Hazlitt savouring things of the world, rejoicing in the multitude of sporting crowds and in the solitude of lonely wanderings. Contents include: “My First Acquaintance with Poets”, “On the Conversation of Authors”, “Of Persons One would Wish to have Seen”, “On Reading Old Books”, “On Actors and Acting”, “On a Landscape of Nicholas Poussin”, “On the Pleasure of Painting”, “The Fight”, “The Indian Jugglers”, etcetera. William Carew Hazlitt (1834 - 1913) was an English writer, editor, and lawyer. His father was the barrister and registrar William Hazlitt, his grandfather the writer and critic William Hazlitt, and his great-grandfather the author and minister by the same name. Many vintage texts such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
