Book excerpt: Around 1796, Mr. Malthus, an English gentleman, had finished reading a book that confidently predicted human life would continue to grow richer, more comfortable and more secure, and that nothing could stop the march of progress. He discussed this theme with his son, Thomas, and Thomas ardently disagreed with both his father and the book he had been reading, along with the entire idea of unending human progress. Mr. Malthus suggested that he write down his objections so that they could discuss them point-by-point. Not long after, Thomas returned with a rather long essay. His father was so impressed that he urged his son to have it published. And so, in 1798, appeared An Essay on Population, by British political economist and demographer THOMAS ROBERT MALTHUS (1766-1834). Though it was attacked at the time and ridiculed for many years afterward, it has remained one of the most influential works in the English language on the general checks and balances of the world's population and its necessary control. This is a replica of the 1826 sixth edition. Volume 1 includes: Book I: "Of the Checks to the Population in the Less Civilised Parts of the World and in Past Times" and Book II: "Of the Checks to the Population in the Different States of Modern Europe."

Book excerpt: An essay on the principle of population, as it affects the future improvement of society, with remarks on the speculations of Mr. Godwin, M. Condorcet, and other writers - Thomas Malthus.. The book An Essay on the Principle of Population was first published anonymously in 1798, but the author was soon identified as Thomas Robert Malthus. The book predicted a grim future, as population would increase geometrically, doubling every 25 years, but food production would only grow arithmetically (rising as 1,2,3,4, etc.), which would result in famine and starvation, unless births were controlled. The book overlooked potential improvements in farming such as steam-powered machines, chemical fertilizers, drip irrigation, night lighting, or genetically modified organisms (GMO). The following Essay owes its origin to a conversation with a friend, on the subject of Mr Godwin's essay on avarice and profusion, in his Enquirer. The discussion started the general question of the future improvement of society, and the Author at first sat down with an intention of merely stating his thoughts to his friend, upon paper, in a clearer manner than he thought he could do in conversation. But as the subject opened upon him, some ideas occurred, which he did not recollect to have met with before; and as he conceived that every least light, on a topic so generally interesting, might be received with candour, he determined to put his thoughts in a form for publication. The Essay might, undoubtedly, have been rendered much more complete by a collection of a greater number of facts in elucidation of the general argument. But a long and almost total interruption from very particular business, joined to a desire (perhaps imprudent) of not delaying the publication much beyond the time that he originally proposed, prevented the Author from giving to the subject an undivided attention. He presumes, however, that the facts which he has adduced will be found to form no inconsiderable evidence for the truth of his opinion respecting the future improvement of mankind. As the Author contemplates this opinion at present, little more appears to him to be necessary than a plain statement, in addition to the most cursory view of society, to establish it.

Book excerpt: Published in two volumes, these books provide a student audience with an excellent scholarly edition of Malthus' Essay on Population. Written in 1798 as a polite attack on post-French revolutionary speculations on the theme of social and human perfectibility, it remains one of the most powerful statements of the limits to human hopes set by the tension between population growth and natural resources. Based on the authoritative variorum edition of the versions of the Essay published between 1803 and 1826, and complete with full introduction and bibliographic apparatus, this edition is intended to show how Malthusianism impinges on the history of political thought, and how the author's reputation as a population theorist and political economist was established.

Book excerpt: As the world's population continues to grow at a frighteningly rapid rate, Malthus's classic warning against overpopulation gains increasing importance. An Essay on the Principle of Population (1798) examines the tendency of human numbers to outstrip their resources, and argues that checks inthe form of poverty, disease, and starvation are necessary to keep societies from moving beyond their means of subsistence. Malthus's simple but powerful argument was controversial in his time; today his name has become a byword for active concern about humankind's demographic and ecologicalprospects.

Book excerpt: An Essay on the Principle of Population by Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) is one of the most influential and controversial books in the history of social and economic thought. First published anonymously in 1798, and the result of a discussion with his father on the perfectibility of society, it was originally intended as a response to ideas developed in Godwin's Enquirer and Political Justice. The essay is based around Malthus's famous principle of population: that as population increases geometrically, pressure is placed on the earth's agricultural resources, which can only increase at an arithmetic rate; hence Malthus's prediction of mass starvation. His argument further maintained that population is prevented from increasing beyond the food supply by positive (war, famine and pestilence) and preventive (abortions, infanticides and birth control) checks. The principle was and remains one of the most widely debated of modern economic theories. These volumes reveal all the major and minor changes Malthus made in the Essay in the twenty-eight years that separate the appearance of the first and sixth editions. Considered cumulatively, these reworkings show the progression and modification of Malthus's thinking in the light of the hostile criticism and lively debate it provoked. The impact of Malthus's book was tremendously far-reaching. Darwin and Wallace acknowledged Malthus as the source of the idea of 'the struggle for existence'; Marx, Engels, Paley, Darwin, Wallace, Keynes and Ricardo were all influenced by Malthus. No other book in the history of economic thought has caused as heated and lasting a debate as the Essay. These editions are an indispensible resource for scholars of social, economic and political theory. 2nd Edition The greatly enlarged second edition, 'the Great Quarto', which Malthus himself calls 'a new work', was written in response to the numerous critical writings and responses to the first Essay. This version places a great emphasis upon preventive checks and an entirely new passage can be found advocating delayed marriage as the most powerful check on population.

Malthus warned of future difficulties, based on an interpretation of a potential future in which the population increased in geometric progression while food production increased in an arithmetic progression, which would leave a difference resulting in the want of food and famine, unless birth rates decreased. This book fuelled debate about the size of the population in Britain and contributed to the passing of the Census Act 1800.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a sweeping global and intellectual history that radically recasts our understanding of Malthus's Essay on the Principle of Population, the most famous book on population ever written or ever likely to be. Malthus's Essay is also persistently misunderstood. First published anonymously in 1798, the Essay systematically argues that population growth tends to outpace its means of subsistence unless kept in check by factors such as disease, famine, or war, or else by lowering the birth rate through such means as sexual abstinence. Challenging the widely held notion that Malthus's Essay was a product of the British and European context in which it was written, Alison Bashford and Joyce Chaplin demonstrate that it was the new world, as well as the old, that fundamentally shaped Malthus's ideas.
