Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Christian Baptism The cause of the bible is the cause of God, and the only noble cause of men. The individual who contributes anything to the more wide diffusion of the light which is from heaven, among the inhabitants Of the earth, promotes that cause, ele vates the human character, and brings the world under Obligation to him as a benefactor at the same time he adds a note to the anthem once sung by angels Glory to God in the highest On earth peace; good will to ward men. In order to do this, it is not indispensable that new truth be discovered. The bible contains an entire and perfect theology; and to take of the things of Christ and show them to men, is enough. This the Christian may do, as the instrument Of the Holy Spirit. It is a no less noble or useful work to help a Chris tian brother to clearer and brighter light, than to reflect the light on the darkness Of unregenerated minds. The main design Of this book is, to communicate important truths to scholars already in the school of Christ. Aware how many are disposed to attribute any opinion which contradicts their own to such a partial, one sided investigation as they practise themselves, I determined to form my judgment entirely by the study of the scriptures, and of such authors as advocate the baptism of infants. To that determination I have adhered. And not having read a single baptist book or tract, I publish the following work as an independent testimony to the exclusive right of believers to Christian baptism. Undoubt edly I might have enriched its pages by an examination of the able and excellent authors who have written on the same side; and by the use of their reasonings and researches might have escaped some of the errors of detail into which it is possible that, in the discussion of a question so extensive and so. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Baptism, Its Subjects and Mode Scarcely ever hear the subject from our pulpits. There are hundreds of congrega tions in which the younger members never heard a sermon on Infant Baptism, and prob ably never more than a very hasty explana tion of our practice concerning the mode. The result is that, so far as such communities are educated at all on this subject, it is under other auspices than our own, and by no means friendly to our doctrines. I have thought that something of this character, in expensive and unpretentious, ought to be offered to those who lack time or disposition to study our more critical works; and with this view I send out these Discourses, be lieving they will measurably meet a real want, and contribute toward the removal of the more serious difficulties from the minds of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apostolic Baptism: Facts and Evidences on the Subjects and Mode of Christian Baptism The Author of these "Facts and Evidences on the Subjects and Mode of Christian Baptism" has concisely detailed the causes of his work in the preliminary paragraph to the ensuing chapter on the "Subjects of Baptism." But as that narrative only partially applies to the present edition of this very important volume, it is requisite to delineate the alterations which have now been made in the form of his original publication. For Mr. Taylor's investigation of Christian Archaeology, in reference to the ordinance of Baptism, the result of which appears in this volume, we are indebted to a discussion between himself and a Baptist Deacon, respecting the evangelical authority of the Baptist practice in prohibiting all persons from the Lord's Table, who have not been submersed in adult age. The Baptist Deacon was perplexed by Mr. Taylor's "Facts and Evidences." In conformity with his desire, Mr. Taylor presented him a "sketch of the argument," that, it might be confuted, if any of the Baptist brethren could accomplish that. work. But they preserved a profound silence upon the subject. Several attempts were made to introduce the topic into the English Baptist Magazine, thereby to give the Baptists the most eligible and advantageous opportunity to rebut Mr. Taylor's "Facts," and to disprove his "Evidences;" but the editor and his consociates, sternly rejected every endeavour to elicit a public examination of the Baptismal controversy in that peculiar aspect within their own ecclesiastical boundary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Baptism: An Examination of the Rev. Mr. Fowler's Lectures on the "Mode and Subjects of Baptism" Now I shall cheerfully leave my intelligent and candid fellow citizens to judge between me and the author, with regard to these charges of abuse, vulgarity, &c. After they have read my 'address' in reply to Concord', and my Response' to the First Congregational Church in Fall River; and especially when they shall have considered the course which Mr. F. And his people have taken with regard to this controversy. Still, as the author of these lectures aims his artillery at me, (though he has not used my name, ) it seems to devolve on me to examine his lectures And as I have from the first been willing that the light of day should shine on the whole of this controversy, I shall not now seek concealment, nor resort to artifice, but endeavor openly and fearlessly, and yet affectionately, to expose error and de' fend truth. In prosecuting the work before me, I intend to treat Rev. Mr. Fow ler and his people with entire respect; and I hope that I may yet live and have Opportunity to give them and the world substantial proof that I do not indulge any unkind feeling toward them as Chris tians. It would afford me sacred joy' to do them good - to promote their immortal welfare - to reciprocate every expression of Christian love.' I do sincerely, before God and men, publicly invite an inter change of kind offices with the Rev. Mr. Fowler and the members of his church, and I do hope that no unpleasant feelings arising from this controversy will be allowed to obstruct a friendly intercourse with each other.
