Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Inspiration of the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament TH E inspiration of the holy scriptures is a subject, on which it is of great importance to form just and accurate ideas. If they be the compositions of men, who, though honest, and upon the whole well informed, were under no infallible assistance and direction, they are not entitled to the same reverence, as if they had been dictated by the Spirit of God nor can we read them with the same confidence in their counsels and instructions. Their con tents must be subjected to a strict examina tion, and the truth of their doctrines must be ascertained by other evidence than the author ity of the writers, before we can yield to them a' rational assent. It is evident that such a view of the' scriptures would involve us in endless 1nquiries and disputations, and by giv mg scope to unrestrained speculation, would. Book excerpt: Six major scholars selected for their contributions in the study of biblical inspiration and who provide a veritable cross-section of the diversity of viewpoints on this topic as found in Anglo-American scholarship are surveyed. Abraham Heschel James Burtchaell Bruce Vawter William Abraham Kern Trembath Paul Achtemeier This presentation offers a constructive criticism of these insights from a Roman Catholic perspective, synthesizes their significant contributions, and shows the continuing dialogue among North American scholars in the field of biblical inspiration. A unique contribution of this book is that it affirms the traditional understanding of biblical inspiration as set forth by the Catholic Church, most notably in Dei Verbum of the Second Vatican Council, while at the same time positing the continuity between past biblical inspiration and present spiritual illumination. Book excerpt: Popular author and scholar Dr. Scott Hahn has released a collection of essays on the study and interpretation of Scripture from a Catholic perspective. Aptly titled Scripture Matters: Essays on Reading the Bible from the Heart of the Church, Dr. Hahn takes a penetrating look into the depths of Scripture, showing the reader how to uncover its many layers of meaning and inspiration. Scripture Matters serves both as an instructional guide to reading the Bible and as a delightful meditation on the grandeur of God's Word. Dr. Hahn effectively illustrates his discussion with the writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Josemaría Escrivá, Cardinal Ratzinger, and other exemplary scholars of Scripture who truly speak "from the heart of the Church."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scripture is an amazing word: this is a word that both acts at the heart of a person’s life and begets a testimony “like” itself. The more a person looks into the depths of this “word”, the clearer it is that there is both real human authorship and an incredibly subtle presence of the “divine Author”. There are not, however, two words; but one mysteriously enriched word of God: a word at once ancient and ever open to the challenges of contemporary questions and concerns. Secondly, if dialogue is a characteristic of God, Scripture “expresses” this through the multitude of voices through which it is written. So, whether it is a matter of listening to this word in the Church, drawing on foundational studies on the biblical text, or researching questions in embryology, philosophy, theology, marriage and ecumenism, a person is drawn into an amazingly fertile divine-human dialogue. Indeed, in the end, it is impossible to express the number of human beings who are in this dialogue; and, in that very impossibility, there is a glimpse of the mystery of God calling us to a dynamic communion. Finally, given the great challenge of thinking that a person is so immersed in a “subjectivism” that drowns inter-personal dialogue, the word of God comes to strengthen the search for truth and facilitates the investigations that transcend individuals, groups, nations, cultures and times. For Scripture cannot be more centred in a time, a place, a people; it cannot be more “subjective” in its account of an immense variety of human experience. But then, the very historical consistency of the fact that this heritage of utterly human experience has been able to “speak” to mankind as a whole, at any time, in any place, in any culture, is an incredibly convincing testimony that this is a unique word: a word that both arises out of a profound anthropology of man and can destroy isolation and effect communion. This book, then, takes up these questions, both intensely personal and profoundly contemporary, and lets the words “Listen Israel” resound throughout its pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These eighteen pieces have been commissioned to provide a succinct yet comprehensive guide to the best of recent evangelical thinking about how the New Testament is to be interpreted, so that it may speak most clearly to today's world. The need for such a handbook can be felt more keenly as on the one side a secularized world dismisses the biblical faith as outmoded, unworkable, and unsatisfying; and, on the other, numerous Christian communities, committed to taking that faith with ultimate seriousness, are driven by controversies about how to read and understand the Bible. Following the editor's introduction, in which I. Howard Marshall examines a familiar New Testament passage in order to exemplify the problems and rewards that await the careful interpreter, the essays are arranged under four headings, beginning with overviews of the history of New Testament study and the role of the interpreter's presuppositions in this enterprise; then going on to discuss the various critical tools, the methods of exegesis, and the application of the New Testament to the faith and life of the contemporary reader. An annotated bibliography concludes the presentation. Because the issues involved here have too often been ignored in many quarters, more than one approach to or opinion about a given matter may surface in these essays; yet, undergirding this diversity is the author's shared conviction, as conservative evangelicals with a high regard for the authority of Holy Scripture, that we are called upon to study the Bible with the full use of our minds. As the editor writes, The passages which we interpret must be the means through which God speaks to men and women today. Our belief in the inspiration of the Bible is thus a testimony that New Testament exegesis is not just a problem; it is a real possibility. God can and does speak to men through even the most ignorant of expositors of his Word. At the same time he calls us on to devote ourselves to his Word and use every resource to make its message the more clear.
