Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Essay on the First Publication of Sir Isaac Newton's Principia Sir david brewster is well known to be engaged on an enlarged edition of his Life of Newton, for which, in addition to other valuable. Documents, be has had access to the papers belonging to the Earl of Portsmouth. It may be right, therefore, to mention, that no steps were taken towards printing this Essay, before it had been ascertained that he would not con sider the publication of it as an interference with his more important object. Indeed, minute details on a particular point would hardly be compatible with a general history, although it is hoped that they may supply some materials for the greater work. Excerpt: ... the error arose has been satisfactorily explained by Rigaud and Edleston. Another blunder, which may be noticed in passing, is that made by Newton in a memorandum quoted below (see below, p. 58), where the discovery of some of the results given in his lectures of 1684 is assigned to June and July, 1684; they cannot have been made before August, but must have been made before the end of November. The tract Propositiones De Motu is memorable as marking the point at which Newton had arrived about the end of 1684; it contains the chief propositions given in his lectures of that year, as also two or three theorems on motion in a resisting medium. The tract contains eleven propositions, preceded by three definitions, a statement of four hypotheses or assumptions, and two lemmas. The proofs are geometrical. The propositions are as follows--the corresponding proposition in the Principia being indicated by a reference in square brackets: (i) the equable description of areas by the radius vector of a body moving under a central force book i. prop. 1; (ii) comparison of the forces under which bodies describe circles uniformly, with five corollaries book i. prop. 4; (iii) the law of centripetal force to a given point under which any curve can be described book i. prop. 6; (iv) application to a circle described under a force directed to a point in the circumference book i. prop. 7 of the first edition; (v) application to an ellipse described about the centre book i. prop. 10; (vi) application to an ellipse described about the focus, with a scholium on the application to the planets book i. prop. 11 j (vii) if ellipses be described under a central force which varies inversely as the square of the distance, then the squares of the periodic times are...

Book Synopsis Force and Geometry in Newton's Principia by : François De Gandt
Download or read book Force and Geometry in Newton's Principia written by François De Gandt and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book François De Gandt introduces us to the reading of Newton's Principia in its own terms. The path of access that De Gandt proposes leads through the study of the geometrization of force. The result is a highly original meditation on the sources and meaning of Newton's magnum opus. In Chapter I De Gandt presents a translation of and detailed commentary on an earlier and simpler version of what in 1687 became Book I of the Principia; here in clearer and starker outline than in the final version, the basic principles of Newton's dynamics show forth. Chapter II places this dynamics in the intellectual context of earlier efforts--the first seeds of celestial dynamics in Kepler, Galileo's theory of accelerated motion, and Huygens's quantification of centrifugal force--and evaluates Newton's debt to these thinkers. Chapter III is a study of the mathematical tools used by Newton and their intellectual antecedents in the works of Galileo, Torricelli, Barrow, and other seventeenth-century mathematicians. The conclusion discusses the new status of force and cause in the science that emerges from Newton's Principia. Originally published in 1995. Book Synopsis Magnificent Principia by : Colin Pask
Download or read book Magnificent Principia written by Colin Pask and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobel laureate Steven Weinberg has written that "all that has happened since 1687 is a gloss on the Principia." Now you too can appreciate the significance of this stellar work, regarded by many as the greatest scientific contribution of all time. Despite its dazzling reputation, Isaac Newton's Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, or simply the Principia, remains a mystery for many people. Few of even the most intellectually curious readers, including professional scientists and mathematicians, have actually looked in the Principia or appreciate its contents. Mathematician Pask seeks to remedy this deficit in this accessible guided tour through Newton's masterpiece. Using the final edition of the Principia, Pask clearly demonstrates how it sets out Newton's (and now our) approach to science; how the framework of classical mechanics is established; how terrestrial phenomena like the tides and projectile motion are explained; and how we can understand the dynamics of the solar system and the paths of comets. He also includes scene-setting chapters about Newton himself and scientific developments in his time, as well as chapters about the reception and influence of the Principia up to the present day.

Download or read book The Principia written by Sir Isaac Newton and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-12-29 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Isaac Newton's Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles) is considered to be among the finest scientific works ever published. His grand unifying idea of gravitation, with effects extending throughout the solar system, explains by one principle such diverse phenomena as the tides, the precession of the equinoxes, and the irregularities of the moon's motion. Newton's brilliant and revolutionary contributions to science explained the workings of a large part of inanimate nature mathematically and suggested that the remainder might be understood in a similar fashion. By taking known facts, forming a theory that explained them in mathematical terms, deducing consequences from the theory, and comparing the results with observed and experimental facts, Newton united, for the first time, the explication of physical phenomena with the means of prediction. By beginning with the physical axioms of the laws of motion and gravitation, he converted physics from a mere science of explanation into a general mathematical system.
