Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Regency-inspired kingdom of Calatini is filled with magic and tender romance. But even in Calatini, magic comes with a cost, and sometimes a curse can become a blessing. Kit, the young, widowed Countess of Blaine, must remarry. She's already chosen the perfect husband—except she can't stand his kisses. But on Longnight, the Goddess blesses her with a powerful illusion: Kit shall appear a hideous crone until she becomes who she was meant to be. Before anyone from court sees her, she flees to the one person she knows shall help—Mel, the gentleman she loved as a girl who is now a priest for the Goddess. Mel, the middle son of a wealthy duke but called to serve the Goddess, has been avoiding Kit since discovering her cruel lies separated his brother from the girl he loved. But when Kit begs Mel for his help, he feels compelled to agree for the sake of the devout and tender girl he'd once loved. But no one can break the Goddess's illusion, not even a wise elf or a powerful seer. So with Mel's support, Kit settles into life at the Goddess's temple. She and Mel continue to clash, and those clashes soon lead to passionate kisses—ones she actually enjoys. But a priest would never marry an unworthy lady like her, and she can't live the rest of her life as a crone. Somehow, Kit must break her unwanted illusion, forget about Mel, and return to court where she belongs. Yet the Goddess's plans are not so easy to foil, and she has other ideas for Kit and Mel. The Goddess's Illusion is Jane Austen meets Howl's Moving Castle, with the outpouring of magic, fantasy, and clean romance that make the Calatini Tales beloved. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "As I continue to read the stories in the Calatini world, I'm completely captured by the writing of Katherine Dotterer ... the romance in this is mostly clean and certainly swoonworthy."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered the first pan-Africanist work of fiction and among the earliest English novels written by an African author, Ethiopia Unbound: Studies in Race Emancipation is a classic of Ghanaian literature that continues to resonate with modern readers today. “[T]he Nations were casting about for an answer to the wail which went up from the heart of the oppressed race for opportunity. And yet it was at best an impotent cry. For there has never lived a people worth writing about who have not shaped out a destiny for themselves or carved out their own opportunity.” With this political statement, J.E. Casely Hayford begins his novel of African emancipation. Semi-autobiographical, it is the story of Kwamankra, a man who, like the author, traveled from Africa to London to become a lawyer. Through dialogue with his English friend Whitely, knowledge of historical and contemporary events in Africa, and his relationship with the lovely Mansa, Kwamankra comes to believe in full independence for his homeland and his people. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of J. E. Casely Hayford’s Ethiopia Unbound: Studies in Race Emancipation is part of the Mint Editions catalog.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dasam Granth is a 1,428-page anthology of diverse compositions attributed to the tenth Guru of Sikhism, Guru Gobind Singh, and a topic of great controversy among Sikhs. The controversy stems from two major issues: a substantial portion of the Dasam Granth relates tales from Hindu mythology, suggesting a disconnect from normative Sikh theology; and a long composition entitled Charitropakhian tells several hundred rather graphic stories about illicit liaisons between men and women. Sikhs have debated whether the text deserves status as a "scripture" or should be read instead as "literature." Sikh scholars have also long debated whether Guru Gobind Singh in fact authored the entire Dasam Granth. Much of the secondary literature on the Dasam Granth focuses on this authorship issue, and despite an ever-growing body of articles, essays, and books (mainly in Punjabi), the debate has not moved forward. The available manuscript and other historical evidence do not provide conclusive answers regarding authorship. The debate has been so acrimonious at times that in 2000, Sikh leader Joginder Singh Vedanti issued a directive that Sikh scholars not comment on the Dasam Granth publicly at all pending a committee inquiry into the matter. Debating the Dasam Granth is the first English language, book-length critical study of this controversial Sikh text in many years. Based on research on the original text in the Brajbhasha and Punjabi languages, a critical reading of the secondary literature in Punjabi, Hindi, and English, and interviews with scholars and Sikh leaders in India, it offers a thorough introduction to the Dasam Granth, its history, debates about its authenticity, and an in-depth analysis of its most important compositions.
