The book consists of twenty-six pieces ranging from five to sixty-two pages in length. An American edition was published the same year by Harper and Brothers under the title Social Forces in England and America.Wells organized the essays thematically, inserting a fanciful "synopsis" after the table of contents conveying his view that the book constituted an argument: "Blériot arrives and sets him thinking. (1) He flies, (2) and deduces certain consequences of cheap travel. (3) He considers the King, and speculates on the New Epoch; (4) he thinks Imperially, (5) and then, coming to details, about Labour, (6) Socialism, (7) and Modern Warfare. (8) He discourses on the Modern Novel, (9) and the Public Library; (10) criticises Chesterton, Belloc, (11) and Sir Thomas More, (12) and deals with the London Traffic Problem as a Socialist should. (13) He doubts the existence of Sociology, (14) discusses Divorce, (15) Schoolmasters, (16) Motherhood, (17) Doctors, (18) and Specialisation; (19) questions if there is a People, (20) and diagnoses the Political Disease of Our Times. (21) He then speculates upon the future of the American Population, (22) considers a possible set-back to civilisation, (23) the Ideal Citizen, (24) the still undeveloped possibilities of Science, (25), and-in the broadest spirit-the Human Adventure. (26)"Odin's Library Classics is dedicated to bringing the world the best of humankind's literature from throughout the ages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the BAAL Book Prize 2016 The field of "World Englishes" takes on ever more importance in the modern era. Mario Saraceni's World Englishes: A Critical Analysis looks at the developments in the field from a critical perspective. It examines the historical, linguistic, ideological and pedagogical aspects in the study of the ever-evolving forms, roles and statuses of English around the world. The principal aim is to offer a critical overview of the field in order both to inform readers about the main issues at stake and to challenge established positions and descriptive/analytical paradigms. The book has four sections, each of which reviews established accounts and offers alternative perspectives on those. “History” considers representations of the evolution of 'old English' and 'new Englishes' and begins to unveil the strong link between conventional accounts and ideological motivations. “Language” critically examines the traditional notion of 'difference' in the description of varieties of English, and discusses more recent orientations which aim to describe English as a lingua franca and the phenomenon of language hybridity. “Ideology” examines ideological debates around the presence and status of English in the world, such as linguistic imperialism, language ownership and language ecology. The final section, “Pedagogy” discusses pedagogical implications, such as the choice of appropriate 'models' of English and considers the possibility of teaching English as a fully de-anglicised language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World-systems analysis has developed rapidly over the past thirty years. Today's students and junior scholars come to world-systems analysis as a well-established approach spanning all of the social sciences. The best world-systems scholarship, however, is spread across multiple methodologies and more than half a dozen academic disciplines. Aiming to crystallize forty years of progress and lay the groundwork for the continued development of the field, the Handbook of World-Systems Analysis is a comprehensive review of the state of the field of world-systems analysis since its origins almost forty years ago. The Handbook includes contributions from a global, interdisciplinary group of more than eighty world-systems scholars. The authors include founders of the field, mid-career scholars, and newly emerging voices. Each one presents a snapshot of an area of world-systems analysis as it exists today and presents a vision for the future. The clear style and broad scope of the Handbook will make it essential reading for students and scholars of anthropology, archaeology, geography, political science, history, sociology, and development economics.

Book excerpt: This book, with a focus on English and Polish, is a study of surveying terminology, which may be considered as an under-researched area when compared to legal, medical or business terminologies. It examines differences between terms and concepts in the two languages. The purpose of the book is three-fold: firstly, to investigate how surveying terms are created and how they are named in English and Polish; secondly, to analyse concept systems of the two languages with respect to surveying terminology; and thirdly, to indicate the areas of surveying in which terminological and conceptual differences occur, the factors that trigger them and translation strategies which are used to solve them. The book offers a systematic, corpus-based approach to terminology. Data for analyses come from the English and Polish surveying corpora compiled specifically for this project. The author of the book attempts to provide a wide picture of surveying terminology by looking at problems that diversified groups of users may identify. The book is directed towards terminologists and lexicographers, for whom it provides a set of guidelines on how to enrich the content of surveying dictionaries, translators and technical writers, who may find information on how to deal with conceptual mismatches, and to specialists in the surveying field, who are interested in finding equivalents for problematic terms.

Book excerpt: Few works of history have succeeded so completely in forcing their readers to take a fresh look at the evidence as Christopher Hill's The World Turned Upside Down – and that achievement is rooted firmly in Hill's exceptional problem-solving skills. Traditional interpretations of the English Civil War concentrated heavily on a top-down analysis of the doings of king and parliament. Hill looked at ‘history from below,’ focusing instead on the ways in which the people of Britain saw the society they lived in and nurtured hopes for a better future. Failing to understand these factors – and the impact they had on the origins and outcomes of the wars of the 1640s – means failing to understand the historical period. In this sense, Hill's influential work is a great example of the problem-solving skills of asking productive questions and generating alternative possibilities. It forced a generation of historians to re-evaluate the things they thought they knew about a key pivot point in British history – and went on to influence the generations that came after them.

This book was released on 2023-04-21 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2022 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, University of Baghdad, language: English, abstract: The study of identity within a given discourse is one of the significant topics in the field of critical discourse analysis. Iraqi Christian identity has undergone various political and social changes during different historical periods leading to the emergence of the Christian identity as a minority in society. The present study investigates the representation of the identity of Iraqi Christian minority in the narrative discourse of selected English and Arabic novels. More precisely, the present study is a critical discourse analysis of the Christian identity as a minority in selected English and Arabic novels, namely; the English novel “Abducted in Iraq” by Saa’d Hanna (2017), and the Arabic Novel “الحفيدة الامريكية” (The American Granddaughter) by Inaa’m Kachachi (2009). The study aims at: first, identifying the identity representation of Iraqi Christian minority in the narrative discourse of selected English and Arabic novels before and after 2003 war; second, investigating the textual resources and their role in the identity construction of Iraqi Christian minority in the narrative discourse of selected English and Arabic novels before and after 2003 war; third, identifying the discursive resources and their role in the identity construction of Iraqi Christian minority in the narrative discourse of selected English and Arabic novels before and after 2003 war; fourth, examining the social resources and their role in the identity construction of Iraqi Christian minority in the narrative discourse of selected English and Arabic novels before and after 2003 war. That is, it examines the role played by power and social dynamisms in the identity construction under analysis; and fifth, investigating similarities and differences in the identity construction of Iraqi Christian minority in the narrative discourse of selected English and Arabic novels before and after 2003 war at the textual, discursive and social levels of analysis. For achieving the afore-mentioned aims, a purposive sampling technique is used to choose the most representative data from the selected English and Arabic novels. The data is analysed according to a synthesised theoretical framework based on Wodak et al. (2009), Fairclough (2015), Wortham (2001), and Graumann (1999). The data are analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So much to read, so little time? This brief overview of Brave New World tells you what you need to know—before or after you read Aldous Huxley’s book. Crafted and edited with care, Worth Books set the standard for quality and give you the tools you need to be a well-informed reader. This short summary and analysis of Brave New World includes: Historical context Chapter-by-chapter overviews Profiles of the main characters Themes and symbols Important quotes Fascinating trivia Glossary of terms Supporting material to enhance your understanding of the original work About Brave New World by Aldous Huxley: Aldous Huxley’s visionary Brave New World is one of the world’s greatest dystopian novels. In a society built on conformity, stability, and pervasive “happiness,” individuals are not born, but manufactured into one of five distinct castes—from dull-witted laborers to leaders and thinkers. Even as embryos, people are conditioned and programmed not only to accept, but to enjoy their predestined lives—or is it their slavery? But what happens when a savage—a man born from an actual mother—is introduced into this perfectly ordered society? Brave New World is a masterpiece of literary satire, as appropriate today, in our world of endless, shallow distractions and ubiquitous mass media, as it was when it was first published in 1932. The summary and analysis in this ebook are intended to complement your reading experience and bring you closer to a great work of fiction.
