Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] The unique properties of underwater acoustic communications, such as large and time-varying propagation delay, low and range dependent channel bandwidth, and adverse operating environments, challenge the design of an energy efficient protocol in underwater acoustic wireless sensor networks (UA-WSNs). In this dissertation, we present a family of reinforcement learning based energy-efficient protocols for UA-WSNs so that the systems are "self-adaptive" or "self-optimized" to the environment after having been deployed. We show that, due to the limited bandwidth in underwater acoustic communication channels, the energy consumption caused by collisions and retransmissions is much higher than that of its terrestrial counterparts. Therefore, the key issue of extending the lifetime of underwater sensor networks is to reduce the collisions and retransmissions. To address this issue in a single underwater acoustic channel, we model the UA-WSNs as single agent reinforcement learning systems and design an routing protocol to aid transmitters to determine the most energy efficient relay nodes. In the design of the reward function, we use the transmission power level, the neighborhood interference, and the feasible bandwidth as the main parameters for the selection of relay nodes. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed protocol achieves a remarkable energy efficiency in comparison with the Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol. For verifying the feasibility of the reinforcement learning based energy efficient protocol in multiple underwater acoustic communication channels, we improve the protocol by including the channel-related factors in the design of the reward function. In the proposed UA-WSN system, the feasible acoustic spectrum is divided into a number of sub-channels which suffer diverse and frequency dependant attenuation and noise interference. The proposed protocol helps each transmitter to determine not only an optimal relay node, but also an optimal propagation sub-channel to the optimal relay node. For the reward function of the proposed protocol, the channel-related factors are used to evaluate the quality of the sub-channels in terms of noise and attenuation level, probability of collisions, etc.. Simulation results show that the use of a multiple-channel reinforcement learning protocol manifests far better energy efficiency than a single-channel reinforcement learning protocol. But the use of a large number of sub-channels leads to performance degradation due to the extremely narrow bandwidth and low capacity of sub-channels.

These networks may consist of large numbers of low cost, low power, disposable sensor nodes that can be deployed inside or close to phenomena to be monitored. The nature of these networks necessitates specific design requirements, of which energy efficiency is paramount. The limited available energy of sensor nodes is mainly drained during communication and computational processing. An energy efficient routing protocol can limit the number of message transmissions and the computational complexity of finding routing paths. Many routing protocols have been proposed for wireless sensor networks. Most of them are computationally complex, require a large number of messages to be transmitted or require that sensor nodes possess certain hardware capabilities in order to function. The objective of this dissertation was to develop a Simple Energy Efficient Routing (SEER) protocol for wireless sensor networks that is computationally simple, reduces the number of transmitted messages and does not impose any hardware prerequisites. The new routing protocol, which was developed during this research, uses a flat network structure for scalability and source initiated communication along with event-driven reporting to reduce the number of message transmissions. Computational simplicity is achieved by using a simple method for routing path selection. The SEER protocol selects the next hop for a message by choosing a neighbour that has a smaller or equal hop count to the current node. If multiple neighbours satisfy this requirement, the neighbour with the highest remaining energy is chosen as the next hop. Each node in the network has a table containing the hop count and remaining energy of each of its neighbours. Periodic messages sent through the network update these neighbour tables. SEER uses a novel approach to select the next hop of a message during routing. The protocol increases the lifetime of the network dramatically, compared to other similar routing protocols. This improvement is directly related to the reduction in the number of transmissions made by each node. The simplicity of the protocol reduces the required computational processing compared to other protocols, and at the same time makes this one of the few available protocols that does not impose hardware requirements on nodes in order to function.

Book excerpt: Abstract Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN) are an active area of research and development. The underwater environment is harsh; acoustic channel characteristics such as high attenuation and absorption are an important challenge for the implementation of UWSNs. Void holes in networks, where a node can receive but cannot transmit to any node other than the sender, also present a significant challenge. This dissertation is motivated by these challenges and investigates solutions for energy efficient and void avoiding routing protocols for UWSNs. A proposed greedy routing protocol called Energy Efficient Depth-Based Opportunistic Routing (EEDOR) is designed and simulated. This protocol uses a novel holding time formula that incorporates both the priority of the candidate node and the depth difference between the packet sender and each candidate node of its forwarding set. The protocol uses a simple design that allows sensor nodes to form their forwarding sets by exchanging local information only. Nodes can collect information efficiently by listening and responding to forward request and forward reply messages. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol achieves significant energy savings as compared to popular protocols, thereby also extending network lifetime significantly. A void avoiding protocol called the called Energy Efficient Depth-Based Opportunistic Routing with Void Avoidance (EEDOR-VA) is also proposed. The novelty of this technique lies in employing a hop-count to determine paths between the source node and sink(s). Trapped and void nodes are recognized and eliminated from node forwarding sets. This protocol is shown to have a high packet delivery ratio (PDR). The protocol is evaluated using two different sets of simulation settings. Finally, the impact of the number of sinks and the sink deployment method on energy conservation and PDR is investigated. Simulation results show that using a deterministic multi-sink deployment can reduce the number of request and reply messages. As a result, the network overhead is reduced, decreasing the energy usage and increasing the PDR of the network.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, , course: Ph.D Computer Science, language: English, abstract: Routing and Energy Efficiency is regarded as highly challenging area of Sensor networks. Significant advancements in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) opens doors for wide implementation in real-time applications like Industrial Monitoring, Smart Cities development, Underwater monitoring operations, tracking objects and many more. Energy Efficient routing is regarded as the most challenging task. Sensor networks mostly operate in complex and dynamic environments and routing becomes tedious task to maintain as the network size increases. Lots of routing protocols- Reactive, Proactive and Hybrid are proposed by researchers but every protocol faces some limitations in terms of energy, routing, packet delivery ratio and security. Therefore, to overcome all the routing issues, the trend has shifted to Biological based Algorithms like Swarm Intelligence based techniques. Ant Colony Optimization based routing protocols have demonstrated exceptional results in terms of performance when applied to WSN routing. This thesis outlines routing protocols in sensor networks, highlight the concept of Swarm Intelligence and presents various Ant Colony Optimization based routing protocols for sensor networks. In addition to this, we present Ant Colony based Energy Efficient routing protocol (IEEMARP = Improvised Energy Efficient Multipath Ant Based Routing Protocol) for sensor networks. The proposed protocol takes into consideration various performance metrics like Packet Delivery Ratio, Throughput, Energy Efficiency, Routing Overhead and End-to-End delay. Proposed protocol is simulated and tested using NS-2.35 simulator. Simulation based results stated that IEEMARP routing protocol is overall 16% more efficient in terms of Packet delivery ratio, Energy Efficiency, Throughput, Routing Overhead and End-to-End delay as compared to other ACO based routing protocols. In addition to this, IEEMARP is highly reliable protocol to ensure timely delivery with acknowledgement packet exchange between source node to sink node and vice versa and also combats the issue of congestion and packet dropping to large extent.
