Arguing that this power derives from frictions in the labor market that make it time-consuming and costly for workers to change jobs, Manning re-examines much of labor economics based on this alternative and equally plausible assumption. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prominence of real-time ridesharing services, such as Uber and Lyft, has dramatically changed the landscape of traditional industries. In this study, we provide a comprehensive analysis on the wage elasticity of labor supply in real-time ridesharing markets using data from a major ridesharing platform in China. By exploiting an exogenous shock from uneven driving restrictions as an instrumental variable, we find a negative labor supply elasticity for ridesharing drivers, suggesting that drivers tend to drive less during days with higher average hourly wage. This surprising finding is consistent with the behavioral income-targeting model based on the theory of reference-dependent preferences: Drivers have heuristic daily targets for total earnings and are more motivated to supply labor when they are below their income target than above it. Therefore, they work less on days when earnings per hour are high and quit the market once their income target is reached. In addition, we find that taxi drivers are more rational and are less affected by the income target. What is more interesting is that the labor supply elasticity is less negative for more experienced and patterned ridesharing drivers, which implies that drivers are more rational when they have repeated opportunities of learning. Estimating labor supply elasticity is critical to understand the economic efficiency of various surge pricing algorithms and driver subsidization programs for ridesharing platforms and policy makers. Our research suggests that a uniform price surging or driver subsidization to all ridesharing drivers may not incentivize labor supply of drivers effectively. A more efficient approach is to implement personalized price surging algorithms and driver subsidization programs targeting more experienced and patterned drivers.

Book excerpt: In the next chapter, "Indivisible Labor with Endogenous Hours: Micro and Macro Labor Supply Elasticities," I study a long-standing discrepancy regarding the magnitude of the Frisch (intertemporal) labor supply elasticity. Empirical studies using individual level data typically uncover an estimated Frisch elasticity below 0.5. By contrast, in the quantitative macroeconomics literature on business cycles, the Frisch elasticity of the representative household (the macro labor supply elasticity) inferred from aggregate time series is often much larger, typically exceeding 2. I explore the quantitative relationship between the individual-level Frisch elasticity along the intensive hours-of-work margin and the macro-level Frisch elasticity in an equilibrium business cycle model. I extend the pure indivisible labor model of Rogerson (1988) and Hansen (1985), allowing firms to choose hours as well as employment. Although a firm would optimally select a fixed workweek given a nonlinear mapping from hours worked to labor services, it has an incentive to adjust both hours (the intensive margin) and employment (the extensive margin) over the business cycle when confronted with employment adjustment costs. A notable feature of the performance of my model is its ability to reproduce both the volatility and persistence of aggregate hours along the intensive margin while retaining the success of the pure indivisible labor models in terms of the large volatility of total hours. My quantitative analysis reveals that the macro labor supply elasticity is approximately twice as large as the individual labor supply elasticity, and thus accounts for a significant portion of the discrepancy between micro- versus macro- based measures of the elasticity of labor supply.

Recently, a rapidly growing volume of microeconomics studies have found empirical support for Robinson's suggestion. This paper develops two macroeconomic implications. First, owners of non-labor resources receive rents above their contribution to production. Thus, estimates of non-labor productivity that utilize market returns have a bias. Second, deceased wage elasticity of labor supply for firms may amplify and/or cause recessions. Implementing policies to reverse a decreased elasticity may be an appropriate response to a recession. Empirical evidence from recessions is found to be consistent with finite pro-cyclical wage elasticity.

This labor market is attractive for the study of labor supply both because the vendors unilaterally decide whether to participate on each game date and because changes in product demand conditions across days are large and highly predictable, generating exogenous game-to-game variation in the vendor "wage." I exploit the observable shifts in product demand conditions across games to estimate the labor supply (participation) elasticity of stadium vendors. Estimates that recognize that demand conditions and vendor labor supply decisions simultaneously determine the vendor wage always find substantial labor supply elasticities, typically in the .55-.65 range. In contrast, estimates that ignore the endogeneity of the vendor wage yield severely downward-biased labor supply elasticities. These results highlight the importance of using demand shift instruments to identify labor supply elasticities in specific labor markets.
