Book excerpt: The Joint Institute for Aeronautics and Acoustics at Stanford University was established in October 1973 to provide an academic environment for long-term cooperative research between Stanford and NASA Ames Research Center. Since its establishment, the In stitute has wnducted theoretical and experimental work in the areas of aerodynamics, acoustics, fluid mechanics, flight dynamics, guid ance and control, and human factors. This research has involved Stanford faculty, research associates, graduate students, and many distinguished visitors in collaborative efforts with the research staff of NASA Ames Research Center. The occasion of the Institute's tenth anniversary was used to reflect back on where that research has brought us, and to consider where our endeavors should be directed next. Thus, an International Symposium was held to review recent advances in the fields relevant to the activities of the Institute and to discuss the areas of research to be undertaken in the future. This anniversary was also chosen a.."1 an opportunity to honor one of the Institute's founders and its di rector, Professor Krishnamurty Karamcheti. It has been his creative inspiration that has provided the ideal research environment at the Joint Institute. The International Symposium on Recent Advances in Aero dynamics and Aconstics was held at Stanford University, Stanford, California, U.S.A., August 22-26, 198:~. Thirty-five distinguished scientists were invited to present a comprehensive review on the fol lowing subject areas: unsteady aerodynamics, jets and shear layers, V /STOL aircraft aerodynamics, rotor dynamics and aerodynamics,.

Download or read book Thrust Characteristics of Multiple Lifting Jets in Ground Proximity written by Edwin E. Davenport and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation has been made to determine the thrust characteristics within ground proximity of a series of models which might represent vertical take-off-and-landing (VTOL) aircraft with multiple exit jet engines exhausting vertically downward beneath a lifting surface. Variations in simulated engine configurations were provided by a series of nozzle insert plugs in which the number of jet exits, located symmetrically on a fixed circle, was varied, or the diameter of the circle was varied for a given number of jet exits. represent lifting surfaces, and high-pressure air was used to simulate jet-engine exhaust. Plywood plates were used to The results of the investigation showed that increasing the number of exits, such that an annular jet configuration was approached, provided more favorable thrust characteristics within ground proximity than any other variation in the geometry of these multiple jets. Tests of a configuration with two nozzles approximating a fan-in-wing VTOL aircraft with fans located at different spanwise locations indicated that the augmentation in thrust within ground proximity was greater for the arrangement with the more inboard location of the nozzles.

Klein and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and theoretical programs are being conducted to aid in the development of an operational Warm Fog Dispersal System using ground based heat sources. To help determine optimum heat and thrust combinations for the system, investigations have been made of the buoyant motion of heated turbulent jets in co-flowing; that is, same direction ambient winds. To take account of the ground effect, an analysis has been made of the experimental data for the planar jet at the point of lift-off in terms of the local Froude number at this point. From this correlation a procedure has been developed for determining the lift-off point, using the ambient wind and initial velocity and temperature of the jet as input variables. A new jet trajectory may now be easily calculated with only a simple modification of the original method in which the ground effect was ignored.
Book Synopsis A Method for Estimating Jet Entrainment Effects on Nozzle-afterbody Drag by : R. C. Bauer
Download or read book A Method for Estimating Jet Entrainment Effects on Nozzle-afterbody Drag written by R. C. Bauer and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly simplified analysis was used to derive an expression for estimating the induced afterbody drag caused by the turbulent jet-mixing process. The approach estimates the induced velocity produced by the jet-mixing process and uses small perturbation concepts to estimate the resulting pressure change on the afterbody surface from which the induced afterbody drag coefficient is obtained. The theoretical induced afterbody drag (entrainment drag) is combined with the maximum jet plume diameter blockage condition to form a correlation method that accounts for the effect of jet area ratio, exit angle, total temperature, molecular weight and ratio of specific heats for a given external stream Mach number, Reynolds number, and afterbody geometry. For verification, the correlation method was used to predict the drag of an H2 and C2H4 jet from the measured drag of an N2 jet and to predict the drag of a hot jet from the measured drag of a cold jet for both the 15- and 25-deg AGARD afterbody configurations in the Mach number range from 0.6 to 1.5. The average accuracy of the correlation method is better than 10% for both afterbody configurations and is 40 to 50 % more accurate than a correlation method based only on the blockage parameter. A brief numerical study indicates that the major parameter which correlates the jet entrainment effect is the product of the jet gas constant and total temperature. (Author).

This book was released on 1962 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interference factors are developed as a function of the degree to which the wake is deflected downward. At large wake deflections the interference may be much greater than indicated by classical theory. Methods are given for extending the present numerical results to tests involving multielement and finite-span models. The theory can be at least partially verified by means of available data. Tables of calculated interference factors are presented in NASA Technical Notes D-933, D-934, D-935, and D-936.
