Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Crystallography The greater number of substances which we prepare in our laboratories are susceptible of crystallization, that is to say, of assuming regular geometrical forms; and it is observed that when the formation of these crystals proceeds under the same circumstances, the forms of the difl'erent individual crystals are precisely similar, so much so, indeed, that these forms are one of the most certain means of distinguishing crystalline bodies from each other. The crystalline forms which different natural substances afi'ect, appear, at first sight, to be infinitely variable; but a minute study of these various forms has brought to light certain general laws to which they are all subj ect, and which set limits to their number. The laws relative to the crystalline forms of bodies already occupy a conspicuous place in our chemical theories, and the importance of this branch of study will become still greater, when the science of crystallo graphy is more generally spread, and chemists give themselves the trouble of determining, with precision, the crystalline forms of the bodies which they examine. The principles of this science, which here follow, require merely of the reader an acquaintance with elementary geometry. This book systematically covers the basics ofcrystal structure and their organization. All chapters have been amplyillustrated to enable ease of understanding of this highly complexsubject. To appreciate the use of crystallography in determining thethree-dimensional crystal structure of molecules, SHELXprogramme with relevant plotting routine has been elaborately dealtwith. Solved examples and exercises provided would be helpful tothe students to have a good understanding of this subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2012 marked the centenary of one of the most significant discoveries of the early twentieth century, the discovery of X-ray diffraction (March 1912, by Laue, Friedrich and Knipping) and of Bragg's law (November 1912). The discovery of X-ray diffraction confirmed the wave nature of X-rays and the space-lattice hypothesis. It had two major consequences: the analysis of the structure of atoms, and the determination of the atomic structure of materials. This had a momentous impact in chemistry, physics, mineralogy, material science, biology and X-ray spectroscopy. The book relates the discovery itself, the early days of X-ray crystallography, and the way the news of the discovery spread round the world. It explains how the first crystal structures were determined by William Bragg and his son Lawrence, and recounts which were the early applications of X-ray crystallography in chemistry, mineralogy, materials science, physics, biological sciences and X-ray spectroscopy. It also tells how the concept of space lattice developed since ancient times up to the nineteenth century, and how our conception of the nature of light has changed over time. The contributions of the main actors of the story, prior to the discovery, at the time of the discovery and immediately afterwards, are described through their writings and are put into the context of the time, accompanied by brief biographical details. This thoroughly researched account on the multiple faces of a scientific specialty, X-ray crystallography, is aimed both at the scientists, who rarely subject the historical material of past discoveries in their field to particular scrutiny with regard to the historical details and at the historians of science who often lack the required expert knowledge to scrutinize the involved technical content in sufficient depth (M. Eckert - Metascience).

Book excerpt: The advent of X-ray diffraction in the early twentieth century transformed crystallography from an area of scientific inquiry largely limited to physics, mineralogy, and mathematics, to a highly interdisciplinary field which now includes nearly all life and physical sciences as well as materials science and engineering. This book is a collection of works showcasing some of the most recent developments in the field of crystallography.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crystallography: An Elementary Manual for the Laboratory Crystallography can be studied from two different view-points: one as a mathematical science with its applications both in the instrumental determination of crystal angles and in their mapping or projection; the other chiefly as an observational study with the application of some simple rules that will enable the prospector and laboratory student to determine the crystalline form with sufficient accuracy for practical purposes in the field or laboratory. It is the intention here simply to devote our time to the latter practical purpose, which is all that the average engineering or science student, who is not making a specialty of Crystallography and Mineralogy, has time to accomplish. In the study of this subject I worked out a course of brief lectures in 1873, and used them in laboratory work at Harvard University. Subsequently, in 1876 and in later years, they were given in connection with my lectures upon Mineralogy in that institution. These lectures form the nucleus of this little work.
