Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on American Grape Culture and Wine Making And simple pleasures. It may at first seem a little dry in its details to the uninformed; but in its fruition it possesses a degree of fascina tion which can be claimed for no other culture. Besides what may be termed its intellectual pleasures, it has an interest of a more material kind, which will address itself not only to those who wish to grow their own grapes and drink their own wine, but more especially to that large class who look at the subject from the stand-point Of profit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Grape Growing and Wine Making: With Several Added Chapters on the Grape Industries of California To do my Share in this great work, to contribute my mite to the fund of general knowledge, has been the aim of the additional pages, devoted mainly to grape culture and wine making on the Pacific Coast. It is true that my experience here is but limited, but I have observed closely, and have quoted the experience of others wherever I could obtain it. I do not claim to be an authority, nor do I acknowledge any. We are all workers In a common cause, liable to err, but also gathering experience as we labor, which may be of service to others, if imparted. Let me hope, that my brother Vintners will receive this new edi tion as kindly as the former one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grape Culture, Wines, and Wine-Making: With Notes Upon Agriculture and Horticulture I submit this work to the kind indulgence of the people of California. The short time allowed me to complete a work of such magnitude and importance will, I hope, serve as a partial excuse for its defects. To make a tour through a large portion of Europe - examine and collect information - select vines and trees - write the following work, with many of the extracts translated from eminent foreign authors and reports of scientific committees, I was allowed, including my journey to Europe and my return, but seven months and twenty-five days. The task was augmented by extensive and necessary correspondence with government officials, scientific societies, and eminent writers. During this time I have allowed myself little time for rest or recreation; and if I have succeeded in fulfilling my duty to my State and to her people, I shall feel myself amply rewarded. I plead for a lenient judgment on the work on account of my defective English, being a native of Hungary, although a naturalized American citizen, which will, I hope, fully explain this unavoidable defect. That my readers will understand my meaning without difficulty is all that I dare hope. The translations contained in the work were, in most cases, necessarily literal, and therefore presented difficulties not easily overcome. With these explanations, the author presents his work to the agricultural public, sincerely hoping that future experience may not belie present promises, but that the matter upon which it treats may prove a valuable and an enduring source of wealth to the American horticulturist and farmer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of American Grape Culture In the fall of 1873, the writer visited the vineyards of Dr. Robert Peter, residing near Lexington, Kentucky. In these vineyards were all the leading and nearly all the then introduced varieties of American grapes. The vines were bearing generally, and the fruit on nearly all was ripe or ripening. The Doctor, having been my instructor in Chemistry in Kentucky State Agricultural College, in which I had completed the scientific course in 1870, discoursed freely upon the character of vine and fruit of the varieties. It seemed to me that there might be numerous combinations, which would naturally occur in such a vineyard, and that one could expect some of the seedlings grown from such crossed seeds to turn out better than any in the vineyard, by combination of excellencies of both parents in the crossed. This re ection aroused within me a strong desire to test the matter. The Doctor gave me clusters of all wished, some thirty or forty kinds. The seeds of these were carefully saved, separately labeled, and noted as to varieties standing near the vine which bore the seeds. These seeds were planted at my new home in Nebraska, but the season and other conditions being adverse, all were lost, yet the kindled ame of passion for experimentation continued to burn. The timbered belts along the streams of that bleak country were ransacked for the few wild grapes growing there, and the vines bearing the best fruit were marked to be removed to vineyard and later hybridized with larger berried kinds, as the only species there (v. 'vulpina) has small berries, although often quite sweet, and pure-in quality. However, a series of years of adversity - with drouth, intensely hard winters, and grasshoppers, - coming on, further experimentation there in that line was dropped. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grape Culture and Wine-Making in California: A Practical Manual for the Grape Grower and Wine Maker A book, specially devoted to "Grape Culture and Wine Making in California," would seem to need no apology for its appearance, however much the author may do so for undertaking the task. California seems to him, at least, as "the chosen land of the Lord," the great Vineland; and the industry, now only in its first stages of development, destined to overshadow all others. It has already assumed dimensions, within the short period of its existence, hardly forty years, that our European brethren can not believe it, and a smile of incredulity comes to their lips when we speak of vineyards of several thousand acres, with a product of millions of gallons per annum. But, while fully cognizant of the importance of these large enterprises, it is not for their owners that this little volume is written specially. The millionaire who is able to plant and maintain a vineyard of several thousand acres, can and should provide the best and most scientific skill to manage his vineyard and his cellars; it will be the wisest and most economical course for him, he can afford to pay high salaries, and the most costly wineries, provided they are also practical, would be a good investment for him. We have thousands, perhaps the large majority of our wine growers, however, who are comparatively poor men, many of whom have to plant their vineyards, nay, even clear the land for them with their own hands, make their first wine in a wooden shanty with a rough lever press, and work their way up by slow degrees to that competence which they hope to gain by the sweat of their brow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture of the Grape, and Wine-Making Three editions of this little treatise, within a year, being required to supply the demand for it, would seem to indicate that the public interest in Grape Culture is on the increase. The author therefore deems it his duty to give the result of his own experience, and that of his fellow-members of the "Wine-growers' Association," in vineyard culture during the past year. It was found that the severe frosts of January and February, 1852 - 8 to 12 below zero - killed many of the grape buds in warm exposed situations, and several vineyards in Kentucky, a few miles south of this city, scarcely produced any fruit. The hard frosts of the 18th and 19th of March did not injure the grape buds, although many apples, such as the yellow Belleflower, were killed in the opening bud; all the peaches, many of the pears, and most of the cherries were destroyed. The frosts of the middle of April and second week in May injured the young shoots of the vine, especially in low situations or near moisture, and in the rows near grass but with all these visitations from frosts, the grape crop was a very promising one until attacked by the rot, the second week in July, and subsequently the first week in August - the latter but slight. This disease appeared to affect those vineyards most, that were in low situations, or not fully exposed to a free circulation of air, either from close planting or otherwise. High manuring, deep hoeing or plowing, and a want of summer pruning at the right time, it was thought, increased the liability to rot. This disease, or something like it, prevailed in many parts of Europe, last year, where it had scarcely been known before, and in the island of Madeira caused an almost entire failure of the grape crop. In this vicinity it cut off about half of the average crop, reducing the product of the whole county to about one hundred gallons per acre. Some made more, but many less than that average.
