Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Course of Geology, Mineralogy, Physical Geography, Vol. 1 best to begin at the very threshold of science, and explain the fundamental laws by which all changes are effected. He has enlarged much more on Physical Geography than in his former works, treating it now as a special subject; and has introduced an entirely now division - endeavouring to give a useful account of the materials of the earth, as well as of the arrangement of rocks. The first part of the velume thus relates to subjects which are barely mentioned in his former book. In Descriptive Geology also he has dwelt much on the structure and composition of rocks, and but little on fossils - partly, because he believes the former subject both more neglected and more practically useful than the latter, and partly because he was unwilling to repeat what he has already elsewhere published at some length. The remainder of the Descriptive Geology, and the chapters on Practical Geology, are, for the most part, adapted and abridged from the work already alluded to, but the matter is re-arranged, and some very important portions are altogether new. These, again, have chiefly a practical tendency. The Author has endeavoured throughout to avoid unnecessary discussion, and confine himself strictly to facts. He has not failed to avail himself of such means of information as were at his disposal, and, amongst other works, has to confess great obligations to JohnBton's (Berghaus') "Physical Atlas," the recent works of Humboldt, and the publications of Sir C. Lyell, in the first division; - to the treatises on Mineralogy by M. Dufiresnoy, and Mr. Dana, in the second division; - and to Macculloch's " Treatise on Rocks," the "Memoirs of the Geological Survey of Great Britain," and Mr. R. C. Taylor's valuable work on the "Statistics of Coal," in the descriptive and practical divisions of his subject. The illustrations in this volume are, with the exception of some diagrams, selected from Beudant's "Cours Elementaire de Geologic," and the mineralogical part of Begnault's "Chimie." They are printed from casts obtained from the publisher of those works. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ...the remainder consisting of phosphates and fluorides of lime and magnesia, with silica, lime, alumina, and oxide of iron. The following are the analyses of the residuum in four cases, the residuum being taken as unity: --Hence it results that in a belt of coral one hundred miles in length, 10 feet broad, and 50 feet deep, there must be nearly 40,000 tons weight of silica, and about five times as much of the various substances mentioned above. The total quantity of carbonate of lime contained in that space may be estimated at about 20,000,000 tons, which can certainly be produced in a wonderfully short space of time, as is proved by the rate at which coral reefs advance in tropical seas. It may illustrate the conditions under which this quantity of matter is obtained, if we mention here the quantity of carbonate of lime present in each hundred miles of sea-water, one mile broad, to a depth of 1000 feet. It will be found to amount to 140,000,000 tons, so that this quantity of salt water would provide seven times the material required for the mass of coralline rock above assumed. 582. Radiated Animals.--Of the starfishes, sea-urchins, and crinoids, which present hard, stony, and easily-preserved skeletons, a vast number of fossil remains are found in calcareous rocks of all kinds. The total amount of the species is reckoned at nearly 1200, and they are thus distributed: --Extinct. Becent. Stellcride (Enerinites, Starfishes, &c.) 416 286 Echinidse (Sea-eggs, Sea-urchins, &c.) 770 146 Total Echinodermata 1186 432 The remains of radiated animals called Encrinites, Crinoids, or Stone Lilies, greatly abound in some of the older limestones; but the spaces formerly occupied by animal tissue are now usually filled by crystalline calc spar, or...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology, Vol. 1: Physical Geology The Science of Geology, though barely yet a century old, covers already so wide a field, and takes in such a diversity of subjects, that few, if any, men can hope thoroughly to master the whole of it. Mineralogy, Petrology, Stratigraphical Geology, Terrestrial Cosmogony, Palaeontology, and other lines of research, though they may fairly be looked upon as subdivisions of Geology, are fast becoming separate Sciences. But while it has become almost an absolute necessity for most Geologists to concentrate their attention on some one department of the science and be content with a less perfect grasp of the rest, there is yet a certain basis or groundwork, with which every one who meddles with Geology, whatever be the branch to which he specially devotes himself, must be acquainted if his work is to be sound. For want of a knowledge of this groundwork the Petrologist, looking merely to chemical and mineralogical composition, classes together rocks which differ totally in their origin or manner of occurrence the Palaeontologist pure and simple is apt to force into an unnatural connection, on account of similarity in fossils, formations which physical evidence shows ought to be kept widely apart; the Field Geologist is content with tracing boundaries on his map, and forgets to ask himself how his lines were produced and what they mean. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Geology, Vol. 1: Physical Geology With this keynote in mind, the attempt is made throughout the book to keep to matters that have a direct bearing on geologic history. The authors consider it a mistake to use the limited space in an ele mentary text for the exposition of scientific matters not directly a part of geology, however interesting they may be in themselves. For this reason the discussion of weather, of which at best only a smattering can be given in a geologic text, has been abandoned. Similarly a detailed discussion of the mechanics of glacier motion, which has inherent inter est but is not essential to an understanding of land sculpture by glaciers, is dispensed with. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Geology The meaning and scope of geology. - Geology has to do with the history of the earth and of its inhabitants. Its field is so broad that for the sake Of convenience and specialized study it has been divided into numerous branches. Geology is concerned with the different members of the solar system and with other heavenly bodies in so far as they yield evidence as to the origin of the earth, or affect the activities now in progress upon it. This division of the general subject is some times called Astronom'ic Geology, and is related closely to the science of Astronomy. The processes and agents at work changing the earth must be studied carefully by the geologist, for they are shaping the present chapter in the history of the earth, and an understanding of them affords also a key by which much of its earlier history, recorded in the rocks, may be read. This phase of the subject is Dynamic Geology, and it has common ground with the special science of Physi ography or Physical Geography, with Meteorology, the science of the atmosphere, and with other sciences. The study of the remains and impressions 'of the plants and animals of past ages that are found in the' rocks is Paleontology; it is really the historical side of Botany and Zoology. Structural Geol ogy is concerned with the arrangement of the materials of the earth. That branch of geology which deals with minerals is Mineralogy, that which studies rocks is Petrology; both are connected closely with Chemistry. There are still other divisions of geology, but the ones mentioned are chief, and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In only one case have I made American geology subordinate, viz., in the J ura-trias period, and that only because of the meagerness of the record of this period in this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear.
