Book Synopsis Poetry Night at the Ballpark and Other Scenes from an Alternative America by : Bill Kauffman
Download or read book Poetry Night at the Ballpark and Other Scenes from an Alternative America written by Bill Kauffman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Kauffman has carved out an idiosyncratic identity quite unlike any other American writer. Praised by the likes of Gore Vidal, Benjamin Schwarz, and George McGovern, he has, with a distinctive and slashingly witty, learnedly allusive style, illumed forgotten corners of American history, articulated a defiant and passionate localism, and written with love and dark humor of his repatriation. Poetry Night at the Ballpark gathers the best of Bill Kauffman's essays and journalism in defense and explication of his alternative America--or Americas. Its discrete pieces are bound by a thematic unity and propulsive energy and are full of unexpected (yet startlingly apposite) connections and revelatory linkages. Whether he's writing about conservative Beats, backyard astronomers, pacifist West Pointers, or Middle America in the movies, Bill Kauffman will challenge, maybe even change, the way you look at American politics and the American provinces.

Book Synopsis From Where We Stand by : Deborah Tall
Download or read book From Where We Stand written by Deborah Tall and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does a particular landscape move us? What is it that attaches us to a particular place? Tall’s From Where We Stand is an eloquent exploration of the connections we have with places—and the loss to us if there are no such connections. A typically rootless child of several American suburbs, Tall set out to make a true home for herself in the landscape that circumstance had brought her—the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. In a mosaic of personal anecdotes, historical sketches, and lyrical meditations, she interweaves her own story with the story of this place and its people—from the Seneca Nation of the Iroquois, to European settlers, to the many utopians who sensed and were inspired by a spiritual resonance here. This edition includes an introduction by William Kittredge and a foreword by Stephen Kuusisto, both highlighting the book’s significance and Tall’s exquisite skill in tracing the relationship between homelands and storytelling.

Download or read book The Travels of Elkanah Watson written by Jeremy Dupertuis Bangs and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elkanah Watson (1758-1842) travelled everywhere and associated with everyone--soldiers, politicians, diplomats, Indians, artists, scientists, slave traders and abolitionists. He met the Marquis de Lafayette, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Paine and many other American revolutionaries. At 19, he smuggled funds for the Revolution from Rhode Island to South Carolina in the midst of the war, while starting diaries he would keep throughout his life. Returning, he moved from New England to France, carrying letters from Congress to Benjamin Franklin in Paris before setting himself up as a merchant supplying arms to America. As the Revolutionary War came to a close, he delivered the United States' final messages to British Prime Minister Lord Shelburne. His tour of England impressed upon him the value of canals, new industries and enlightened agriculture, which he championed upon returning to America. Watson's travels in the U.S., Europe and Canada come to life in this illustrated biography based on his diaries and notes, and his vast collection of unpublished documents.

Book Synopsis Handbook of the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States by : William A. Kretzschmar
Download or read book Handbook of the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States written by William A. Kretzschmar and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1993-09-15 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who uses "skeeter hawk," "snake doctor," and "dragonfly" to refer to the same insect? Who says "gum band" instead of "rubber band"? The answers can be found in the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States (LAMSAS), the largest single survey of regional and social differences in spoken American English. It covers the region from New York state to northern Florida and from the coastline to the borders of Ohio and Kentucky. Through interviews with nearly twelve hundred people conducted during the 1930s and 1940s, the LAMSAS mapped regional variations in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation at a time when population movements were more limited than they are today, thus providing a unique look at the correspondence of language and settlement patterns. This handbook is an essential guide to the LAMSAS project, laying out its history and describing its scope and methodology. In addition, the handbook reveals biographical information about the informants and social histories of the communities in which they lived, including primary settlement areas of the original colonies. Dialectologists will rely on it for understanding the LAMSAS, and historians will find it valuable for its original historical research. Since much of the LAMSAS questionnaire concerns rural terms, the data collected from the interviews can pinpoint such language differences as those between areas of plantation and small-farm agriculture. For example, LAMSAS reveals that two waves of settlement through the Appalachians created two distinct speech types. Settlers coming into Georgia and other parts of the Upper South through the Shenandoah Valley and on to the western side of the mountain range had a Pennsylvania-influenced dialect, and were typically small farmers. Those who settled the Deep South in the rich lowlands and plateaus tended to be plantation farmers from Virginia and the Carolinas who retained the vocabulary and speech patterns of coastal areas. With these revealing findings, the LAMSAS represents a benchmark study of the English language, and this handbook is an indispensable guide to its riches.
