Book excerpt: The present paper presents an efficient algorithm for solving the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. It is a line Gauss-Seidel relaxation implicit algorithm for three-dimensional flow. Such algorithms have shown very fast convergence properties for two-dimensional flow. The extension to three- dimensions a been troublesome. The proposed algorithm presented herein was developed to solve these difficulties. A computer program based upon this algorithm has been written to solve two-dimensional plane symmetric, axisymmetric or three-dimensional flow of a perfect gas, or a real gas model for air with five species (N2, 02, NO, N, 0) or seven species (N2, 02, NO, NO+, N, 0, e- ). The program can simulate a gas in thermal equilibrium or in thermal nonequilibrium with two temperatures (Translational-Rotational and Vibrational) or three temperatures (Translational, Rotational, and Vibrational). Convergence to engineering accuracy is generally achieved in under a hundred time steps for both two- and three-dimensional flow. Provision is made within the program for a one or two equation turbulence model. Applications are presented to verify the code by comparison with experiment and flight tests. Finally, the numerically simulated flow about a hypersonic vehicle at Mach 25 in powered flight is presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A report on the first steps towards the numerical simulation of hypersonic flows. Intentionally, the ideal-gas assumption is used to validate the methods by comparing results with experimentally observed or theoretically obtained data in cold hypersonic flows about simple geometries. The approaches cover the continuum as well as the gas-kinetic flow regime. An implicit finite-difference method with bow-shock fitting is employed to integrate the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations, while the gas-kinetic flow is simulated by approximations to Boltzmann's equation. The Direct-Simulation Monte-Carlo method is preferred to the Molecular-Dynamics approach because of its larger computational efficiency. Results are compared with experimental data for the laminar flow past a blunted cone at M = 10.6 and past a hemisphere at M = 4.15. The decay of Oseen's vortex at Kn = 0.1, and the gas-kinetic flow past a cylinder at M = 5.48 with Kn = 0.1 and 0.3 have been simulated, and results are shown in comparison with theoretical data. As an application to more realistic configurations the three-dimensional laminar flow past the noise of a typical spacecraft and the gas-kinetic flow in the symmetry plane of the flow past the same configuration is being discussed. The next steps will include real-gas modelling. For hot hypersonic flows experimental data are badly needed for comparison purpose.

Book excerpt: The goal of this research is to study the laminar turbulent transition and other transient flow phenomena of 3-D chemically reacting hypersonic boundary layers by direct numerical simulation (DNS) and by linear stability analysis. The research in the report period was focused on developing new numerical methods for such studies and studying several fundamental transient hypersonic flow phenomena. First, several new efficient and high-order accurate numerical methods for DNS of 3-D hypersonic reacting boundary layers and for computing unsteady hypersonic flows with complex shock interactions were developed. These new methods were developed in order to overcome difficulties associated with the direct numerical simulation of hypersonic flows. Second, several studies on the stability phenomena of hypersonic boundary layers over blunt leading edges both by direct numerical simulation and by linear stability analyses were performed. Also completed were extensive numerical studies on real gas effects on a steady shock/boundary layer interaction and a self-sustained unsteady shock-shock interference heating flows. Third, the effects of using Burnett equations for rarefied hypersonic flow computations were investigated. With the completion of the bulk of work on the development of new numerical methods for complex hypersonic flow simulation, the DNS studies are currently being extended to 3-D hypersonic boundary layer transition over elliptic cross section cones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most challenging problems of modern engineering is undoubtedly the prediction of hypersonic flows around space vehicles in reentry conditions. Indeed, the difficulties are numerous: first of all, these flows are very difficult to model, since very complex physical and chemical phenomena take place during the reentry phase; secondly, temperature, velocity and enthalpy are very high and densities are very low, making the reentry process very difficult to reproduce in ground-based experiments. The past three decades have seen important efforts in computational fluid dynam ics relying on the use of supercomputers to simulate these very complicated flows. The numerical simulation based on imperfect models and methods which were es sentially designed for transonic and supersonic flows has still a long way to go in order to be able to predict these hypersonic reentry flows very accurately. This situation has motivated very strong international cooperative efforts with, as the most visible consequences, the EuropelUnited States Short Courses on Hy personics, which were held in Paris, in 1987 [1,2], Colorado Springs in 1989 [3], and Aachen in 1990 [3]. The workshop on Hypersonics whose results are presented and analysed in these volumes is also a direct consequence of this international cooperation. This scien tific event was an initiative of P. Perrier, Head of the Theoretical Aerodynamics Department of DASSAULT AVIATION, who played a key role in the identification of the critical problems and the realisation of experiments, within the Hermes R&D program framework.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development and applications of a computer code for solving the three-dimensional generalized Boltzmann equation (GBE) using a direct numerical method are presented. The Boltzmann solver of Professor Felix G. Tcheremissine of the Russian Academy of Science serves as the foundation for the development effort. This jet code includes only the translational and rotational energy states of a diatomic gas and has been applied to simulate the flow field of a jet issuing into a vacuum. In this dissertation, this code is employed to accomplish three distinct developmental steps. First, the code is extended for calculating hypersonic shock waves in an inert mixture of gases. For this purpose, the GBE is formulated in an impulse space (instead of the conventional velocity space). The computational methodology is then applied to a binary mixture of gases, which requires the simultaneous solution of four GBE's. Simulations are performed using a gas mixture including both diatomic and monatomic gases in proportions similar to that in air. The solutions are validated against existing hypersonic shock wave experimental data for a single specie gas (nitrogen) in rotational-translational non-equilibrium and available computational data for a binary mixture of monatomic gases. Simulations are then performed for an inert binary mixture of monatomic and diatomic gases in translational non-equilibrium for various concentrations. The effect of mass ratio and molecular diameter ratio of the gases on the structure of the shock is also investigated. Second, boundary conditions necessary for accurately simulating the flows around immersed bodies are developed and evaluated. This research on boundary conditions constitutes a significant advancement beyond the adsorptive boundary condition used in the original Boltzmann solver of Tcheremissine. Five types of boundary conditions at the solid boundary are investigated: (a) the standard adsorptive boundary condition, (b) the specular reflection boundary condition, (c) the diffuse reflection boundary condition, (d) the Maxwellian boundary condition, and (e) the adsorptive Maxwellian boundary condition with different values for the accommodation coefficient. These boundary conditions are tested for hypersonic flow past a flat plate to evaluate their accuracy. Third, the original Boltzmann code, hard-coded for solving the flow field of a jet issuing into a vacuum, is modified to enable simulations of rarefied flows around immersed bodies. The computations are performed for three benchmark geometries, extensively used in the literature for Navier-Stokes simulations, at various hypersonic inflow conditions for flow of a diatomic gas (N2) in rotational-translational non-equilibrium. The three geometries used in the simulations are an axisymmetric blunt body, an axisymmetric bicone, and an axisymmetric hollow-flared-cylinder. Initially, a relatively coarse Cartesian grid was employed in the three-dimensional simulations because of the limitations of physical memory on the available computers. As a result, a shared memory parallel computing platform was developed and built for the sole purpose of being able to perform the fine grid solutions. Consequently, refined grid solutions were generated on the parallel computing platform. For this purpose, the code was parallelized and the parallelization issues for a Boltzmann type solver were addressed. A comparison between the coarse and refined grid solutions is presented to show the influence of grid density on solution accuracy. In light of these results, the issues of accuracy and efficiency of the three-dimensional Boltzmann solver are addressed.

Book excerpt: A numerical method to solve the perfect gas Navier-Stokes equations for hypersonic flows past three-dimensional blunt bodies has been developed. The numerical method uses flux-splitting and shock-fitting with an implicit Gauss-Seidel line-relaxation procedure to accelerate convergence. The technique has been used to solve the flow field over a spherically blunted biconic and the X24C-10D hypersonic research vehicle. The method has been shown to reduce the number of iterations required to achieve convergence of a typical problem by a factor of about one hundred over an explicit method. The scheme also shows a potential advantage over approximately factored implicit methods. The key advantage of this technique is that the low number of iterations required for convergence does not increase as mesh resolution is refined. Keywords: Hypersonic vehicles; Algorithms; Numerical methods and procedures; Three dimensional flow; Viscous flow; Compressible flow.
