Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Educated Nation Mr. Belloc has defined a preface as praise of one's own book. This preface is frankly meant as praise of Mr. Yeaxlee's book. He, as the secretary of the Universities Committee, deserves this for his share in the wonderful work done by the during the war for the bodily welfare of the armies, for their recreation and comfort, and finally for their education. He was also a member of the Adult Education Committee who did much to give value to its report, and who here presents the essence of that report in a form more digestible than that of a Blue Book. But the book itself, An Educated Nation, can justly be praised as giving an excellent conspectus of the many movements now con verging upon Adult Education, and as a picture at once vivid and lucid of the present situation. The book is in the best sense popular; that is, it puts main principles in concrete forms, and does not fail to see the wood for the trees. Though very definite in pur pose, it shows all-round tolerance and can appreciate con icting views. Hence it is an admirable introduction to the whole group of problems implied in the very term 'an educated nation.' Unless this term comes to have more reality than hitherto, it is mere self-delusion to suppose that democracy, whether in the political form of a Labour Government or in the form of democracy in industry, ' can be anything but a colossal failure. There are some superior persons who in the popular always suspect the superficial; if they read this book, they will be relieved, or disappointed. It is true that the author sets out to answer just the questions that will occur to the man in the street, such as the following How can. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schools and the Nation Mr. Best to apply the principles here outlined to English conditions, the wide circulation it certainly deserves. But it is not the mere honour of recognition which constitutes the chief ground of my pleasure. I have grown too old in the struggle for educational ideals to let such personal satisfaction turn my head. Much more important for me is the thought that in so far as other great nations occupy themselves with the spiritual and intellectual elevation of their people, Germany too will reap the benefit of their efforts. The rivalry of two countries in the matter of education is far more welcome, far more profitable, and far more glorious than any competition in armaments. When two neighbours are each truly educated both may dare to live in peace and to devote all their strength to the improvement of their own homes and their own families. The more progress a nation makes internally, the more peaceably will i settle all external differences; and a man' can do bisli country no greater service than by exerting his powers to help other nations in their struggle for moral and intellectual progress, that they may not only uphold the cause of liberty, but may be themselves animated by a spirit of justice and goodwill. The service of institutions of learning is not private but public. It is plain what the nation needs as its affairs grow more and more complex and its interests begin to touch the ends of the earth. It needs efficient and enlightened men. The universities of the country must take part in supplying them. American universities serve a free nation whose progress, whose power, whose prosperity, whose happiness, whose integrity depend upon individual initiative and the sound sense and equipment of the rank and file. Their history, moreover, has set them apart to a character and service of their own. They are not mere seminaries of scholars. They never can be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Struggle for National Education Now even if this were a true accountof the matter, a Liberal might still think twice before making up his mind that there is no more to be said, nor any reason why he should take sides with one of the disputants more than with the other. He would do well to reflect that it is as unsafe to bring an indict ment against a whole. Sect as against a whole nation. If dissenters and churchmen have thus drawn them selves off into two great camps, now both of them alive with the hum of war and giving dreadful note of preparation, there is presumably some very real and substantial prize at issue. Energetic dissenters and energetic churchmen know very well what they are about. No great body of Englishmen will take trouble and spend money and face the wear and tear of forming an army and conducting a long campaign, just to gratify a resentment or air a griev ance. Those who assert that all this is done at the bidding of a clique must, in the face of all history, believe the dissenter to be a man of much docility and very little common sense. They can moreover' have paid no attention to the actual evidence of the universality of the movement. As a body, the non conformists are staunch and active in their hostility to the measure which a sounder and an older Liberal than Mr. Gladstone has described as the worst measure passed by any Liberal government since 1832. Accordingly most men, and most women too, have views on education, tinged as a rule with reaction against the system to which they were sub jected. A second cause of dissatisfaction arises from the visible imperfections of the systems at work among us. Business men have for years been telling us that when they want correspondence clerks to write their foreign letters they find the product Of the German school more useful than that of the English school. The heads of great industries proclaim that they are handicapped in competition with German industries of the same class by the better scientific equipment of the specialists whom the Germans em ploy. Our universities, old and new, alike depend for the bulk of their text books in all subjects of study on the German universities. Whether the student deals with Greek or Latin, with modern languages, or even with English, with chemistry or with geography, he must have recourse to the works of German profes sors. The demands made on the schools by reformers are Of every variety. The public schools are criticized by one set of observers for the narrowness Of their curriculum; by another for the inefficiency of their instruction; by a third for their devotion to outdoor games. The board schools are condemned by some for giving instruction without forming Character, and by others for the lack Of thoroughness in their in struction. The date underneath, 1776, is that of the declaration Of independence, and the words under it signify the beginning Of a new American era which commences from that date. It is impossible to trace our history since, without feeling that the Providence which was with us in the beginning, has continued to the nation His gracious interposition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation of Education to Patriotism The Federal City from its centrality and the advantages which in other respects it must have over any other place in the United States ought to be preferred as a proper site for such a university. These are not the words of a partisan - they are the words of a patriot, inspired by the broadest patriotism. Washington sought an institution not for'the institution's sake; in the fed eral city not for the federal city's sa-ke but an institution that should realize for the nation in the highest possible degree that unity of conception of federal power, that broad national charity among all the people that could be engendered only by bringing together at the seat of national government student-s from every part of the nation. Here they were to learn the science of state building - ea state with absolute sovereignty over those activities which entitle the state to be one in the family of nations. The complex form of our government, so difficult for many to understand - and yet so simple and perfect in its operation when understood, was to be studied from the seat of national power, where the governmental functions of national and international activities are being exercised and local interest-s subordinated and harmonized to the one great organic whole, to the end that the national government might stand before the world perfect and powerful as a great state. Books, pamphlets, magazine articles, suggested courses In Citizenship, good will, and character building are being projected in many sections of the country. It has been well said by the Committee of Eight that the moral element is of surpassing importance in history. Truth has its supreme embodiment in personality. Therefore special emphasis should be given to personal force, because it is truth in the concrete and the great life principles as they have been embodied in individual men that win the deep interest of the boy or girl in the grammar school. Book excerpt: "Everyone is so busy giving the classical education to the students that I'm not sure people have taken the time to actually tell them why it matters..." Rebekah Merkle knows which high school classes you like and which you roll your eyes at, which books you enjoy and which you kinda skim. That's because she went through this whole thing called classical education, too: She was a guinea pig in one of the very first classical Christian schools in the country. Written for students by a (former) student, Classical Me, Classical Thee is lighthearted and--most importantly for you busy high-schoolers--very short. It has a simple goal: to explain why you students are doing what you do in class. (SPOILER: Grades aren't the point--you won't use your knowledge of the Iliad Book 5 every year until you die.) What you do in class is a drill -- and nobody drills for the sake of the drill. You do drills so that you can win the game. The real tragedy, though, would be if you didn't know you were doing drills... or didn't know there was a game at all. Grades aren't the point. So drill to win.
