Ministry of Forests and Range Forest Science Program. This book was released on 2011 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Columbia Inter-agency Non-timber Forest Resources (IANTFR) Committee was established in January 2006 to facilitate a co-ordinated approach to non-timber forest resource management in the province. The Ministry of Forests and Range and Ministry of Agriculture and Lands co-chair the IANTFR Committee. Other government partners include or have included what are now the Ministry of Small Business, Technology and Economic Development, the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, and the Ministry of Community and Rural Development (names of some Ministries have changed since 2006). Representatives from the First Nations Forestry Council and the First Nations Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative have participated in committee meetings. The Centre for Livelihoods and Ecology (formerly the Centre for Non-Timber Resources) at Royal Roads University provides expert advice and support services to the Committee. The Ministry of Forests and Range also contributes to the Committee by providing staff time and expertise, and resources to produce publications. The goals of the Committee are (1) to improve communication and co-ordination across the provincial government, and (2) to advise government on issues related to non-timber forest resource management in British Columbia. The IANTFR Committee members have produced a communication strategy that includes the production of publications designed to improve awareness about non-timber forest resources so that they are managed appropriately.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first in-depth investigation of how non-timber forest products are an integral part of local, national, and global bioeconomies. While the plants and fungi that produce non-timber forest products are essential to the sustainability of forest ecosystems, peoples' food and livelihood security and sovereignty, and thus the bioeconomy, are often absent from bioeconomic strategies. Presenting a selection of empirical cases from around the world that engage with the bioeconomy and non-timber forest products, this volume reveals how essential these products are to creating a greener and more sustainable future, how to to better integrate them into efforts to transition to and expand the bioeconomy, and how such efforts can be supported and developed. Chapters analyse how and to what degree non-timber forest products promote sustainable resource use, generate employment, and contribute to food and livelihood security and poverty alleviation. The volume develops approaches and identifies interventions and policies to support the integration of non-timber forest products into bioeconomy strategies, including in national reporting schemes to provide recommendations for future research and practical implementation. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of forest and natural resource management, bioeconomics, circular economy and ecological economics more widely. It will also be of interest to professionals working in sustainable development and the forestry sector.

Book excerpt: Temperate broadleaved trees grow in very different ecosystems in the northern and southern hemispheres, but are also found extensively in many tropical and subtropical mountain areas. A wide range of non-wood products are derived from temperate broadleaved trees, and their description is organized in this volume according to the part of the tree from which they are obtained (whole tree, foliage, flowers, etc.). This information is presented in order to raise awareness on, and assist in identifying, opportunities for the management and production of non-wood products from temperate broadleaved trees. The intended audience of this publication ranges from interest groups in the forest, agriculture and rural development sectors to conservation agencies in developed and developing countries.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive, global synthesis of current knowledge on the potential and challenges associated with the multiple roles, use, management and marketing of non-timber forest products (NTFPs). There has been considerable research and policy effort surrounding NTFPs over the last two and half decades. The book explores the evolution of sentiments regarding the potential of NTFPs in promoting options for sustainable multi-purpose forest management, income generation and poverty alleviation. Based on a critical analysis of the debates and discourses it employs a systematic approach to present a balanced and realistic perspective on the benefits and challenges associated with NTFP use and management within local livelihoods and landscapes, supported with case examples from both the southern and northern hemispheres. This book covers the social, economic and ecological dimensions of NTFPs and closes with an examination of future prospects and research directions.
