Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Earnest Appeal to the Free Church of Scotland on the Subjects of Its Economics The Board of Publication believe that they are performing an important service for the Presbyterian Church in re-publishing this pamphlet. The topics Dr. Chalmers here discusses with his characteristic ability and energy, are, mutatis mutandis, of no less moment to our Church than they are to the Free Church of Scotland. This will be sufficiently evident to every candid reader of the able and interesting Introduction prefixed to the present edition. A copy of the pamphlet will be sent, through the liberality of a friend, to each of the ministers in our connexion. The Board are unwilling to believe that such seed is to be scattered through the Church in vain. They are convinced that the subjects here presented, demand the most serious attention of our ministers and people, and that they should be discussed until some measures shall he devised and adopted at once to augment the liberality, zeal, and efficiency of our Church, and to promote the comfort and usefulness of her ministers. The management of the Economics of the Church is vested in its Judicatories. With their functions this Board has no wish to interfere. It is not its province even to suggest specific modifications of existing plans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Political Economy as Natural Theology by : Paul Oslington
Download or read book Political Economy as Natural Theology written by Paul Oslington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 20th century, economics has been the dominant discourse in English-speaking countries, displacing Christian theology from its previous position of authority. This path-breaking book is a major contribution to the interdisciplinary dialogue between economics and religion. Oslington tells the story of natural theology shaping political economy in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, emphasising continuing significance of theological issues for the discipline of economics. Early political economists such as Adam Smith, Josiah Tucker, Edmund Burke, William Paley, TR Malthus, Richard Whately, JB Sumner, Thomas Chalmers and William Whewell, extended the British scientific natural theology tradition of Francis Bacon, Robert Boyle and Isaac Newton to the social world. This extension nourished and shaped political economy as a discipline, influencing its theoretical framework, but perhaps more importantly helping legitimate political economy in the British universities and public policy circles. Educating the public in the principles of political economy had a central place in this religiously driven program. Natural theology also created tensions (especially reconciling economic suffering with divine goodness and power) that eventually contributed to its demise and the separation of economics from theology in mid-19th-century Britain. This volume highlights aspects of the story that are neglected in standard histories of economics, histories of science and contemporary theology. Political Economy as Natural Theology is essential reading for all concerned with the origins of economics, the meaning and purpose of economic activity and the role of religion in contemporary policy debates.

Book Synopsis Religion and Social Class by : A. Allan MacLaren
Download or read book Religion and Social Class written by A. Allan MacLaren and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1974, shows how social class and origins in mid-nineteenth century Aberdeen were reflected in religious belief and observance, and how in turn this acted as a catalyst for change in society. Through a detailed analysis of this topic, particularly in relation to the Presbyterian denominations, the author directs fresh light on the emergence and development of the Free Church. The Disruption in the Church of Scotland is examined within the context of changes which had taken place in the form of industrial production, whereby the city as a centre of manufacturing had replaced the domestic production of the countryside. The concomitant changes in the social structure, and the divisions which resulted within the old ruling families, are probed. The social patterns of adherence to the Established and Free Churches are analysed in detail, and the subsequent development of the Free Church is examined in terms of the social support it enjoyed in 1843.
