Book excerpt: A preliminary design for a B-factory has been made using asymmetric collisions between positrons in the PEP storage ring and electrons in a new, log-energy ring. The design utilizes small-aperture, permanent-magnet quadrupoles close to the interaction point (IP). Optimization of optical and beam parameters at the IP will be discussed, as well as the lattice design of the interaction region and of the rings. 7 refs., 3 figs., 2 tabs.

Book excerpt: The study of rare and CP-violating B meson decays is well suited to a high-luminosity e e− collider. For studying certain decay processes there are also substantial benefits associated with asymmetric beam energies, which give a moving center of mass for the B mesons. We describe a design for a 9 GeV x 3.1 GeV B Factory in the PEP tunnel that would operate initially at a luminosity of 3 x 1033 cm−2s−1. Technical problems include issues related to high currents (e.g., beam instabilities, feedback systems, lifetime degradation and detector radiation power dissipation) and those related to the hetero-energetic beams (e.g., beam separation, beam-beam interaction and detector requirements). Issues requiring R D effort are identified. 8 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents results of the search for B + → etaXK+ in which etaX → etapi+pi - or etaX → K0S K+pi-, and etaX is a potentially exotic state with a resonant mass within (1.2-1.8) GeV. We use the BABAR data of 382.9 million BB pairs and report the first observation of B+ → eta(1295) K+ and B+ → eta(1475)K+, and set upper limits for the modes listed below. We also consider an alternative signal model in the etaX → K0S K+/-pi∓ mode with an extra resonance, to better describe the meson mass spectrum. We provide the central values where possible. Hermitian conjugation is implied throughout the document unless stated otherwise. BB+/- →h1295 K+/- xBh 1295→h pp=2.93+0.77+0.22 -0.73-0.21 ˙10-6, BB+/- →h1475 K+/- xBh 1475→ KK&d1;p =13.79+1.83+1.00-1.65-0.56 ˙10-6. Book Synopsis Physics at the Terascale by : Ian Brock
Download or read book Physics at the Terascale written by Ian Brock and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-05-04 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by authors working at the forefront of research, this accessible treatment presents the current status of the field of collider-based particle physics at the highest energies available, as well as recent results and experimental techniques. It is clearly divided into three sections; The first covers the physics -- discussing the various aspects of the Standard Model as well as its extensions, explaining important experimental results and highlighting the expectations from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The second is dedicated to the involved technologies and detector concepts, and the third covers the important - but often neglected - topics of the organisation and financing of high-energy physics research. A useful resource for students and researchers from high-energy physics.

Book Synopsis Search For New Elementary Particles, The: Status And Prospect - Proceedings Of The Trieste Workshop by : Martin Lewis Perl
Download or read book Search For New Elementary Particles, The: Status And Prospect - Proceedings Of The Trieste Workshop written by Martin Lewis Perl and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-06-14 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been more than a decade since new elementary particles were discovered. To recognize the findings of scientists in this still fairly new but exciting and promising area of research, the Trieste Workshop was organised in May 1992 to discuss the status and explore the prospects for the discovery of new elementary particles using the full variety of search methods which are, or will be available to the physicist. All papers in this collection of proceedings are reviews written by experts in their own area of speciality. Many review papers based on experimental findings are also included. To present a clearer and more coherent overview, a theoretical overview talk as well as a summary talk have been included to serve as a link between the various areas that were discussed in the papers. This collection of papers is perhaps the first authoritative source ever published on the search for new elementary particles.
Book Synopsis Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology by : Alexander W. Chao
Download or read book Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology written by Alexander W. Chao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle accelerators are a major invention of the 20th century. In the last eight decades, they have evolved enormously and have fundamentally changed the way we live, think and work. Accelerators are the most powerful microscopes for viewing the tiniest inner structure of cells, genes, molecules, atoms and their constituents such as protons, neutrons, electrons, neutrinos and quarks. This opens up a whole new world for materials science, chemistry and molecular biology. Accelerators with megawatt beam power may ultimately solve a critical problem faced by our society, namely, the treatment of nuclear waste and the supply of an alternative type of energy. There are also tens of thousands of small accelerators all over the world. They are used every day for medical imaging, cancer therapy, radioisotope production, high-density chip-making, mass spectrometry, cargo x-ray/gamma-ray imaging, detection of explosives and illicit drugs, and weapons. This volume provides a comprehensive review of this driving and fascinating field

Download or read book Particle Physics in the New Millennium written by Josip Trampetic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional purpose of the Adriatic Meeting is to present most advanced scienti?c research conducted by the lecturers who take part in the development of their ?elds and, in addition, to provide a school-like atmosphere for young scientists. Dubrovnik, as a geographical centre of this region of Europe, provided a most adequate location for this conference. Having very agreeable surroundings, the conference site nevertheless gave a focus for very strong scienti?c interaction. The subjects chosen for the 8th meeting, in September 2001, were gauge theories, particle phenomenology, string theories and cosmology. We were able to bring together a very good cross section of outstanding scientists who gave extraorinarily good presentations. Certainely one reason for this success is that most of us feel obliged to help the scienti?c life in South East Europe return to its former level. However, there are very exciting new scienti?c developments as well. Part of the meeting was dominated by neutrino physics which has just seen exciting progress by establishing neutrino masses experimentally. This was d- cussed within neutrino masses and grand uni?ed theories (GUTs). General - pects of neutrino physics and CP violation, neutrino mixing and the bayron asymmetry were presented along the same lines. On the theoretical side the idea of the construction of gauge theories on non-commutative spaces and their phenomenological implications is accepted worldwide within the particle physics community.
