Book excerpt: Although youth suicide in the community has been identified as a major public health problem, juvenile suicide in confinement has received scant attention. This is a report on the first national survey on juvenile suicide in confinement. The primary goal was to determine the extent and distribution of juvenile suicides in confinement (i.e., juvenile detention centers, reception centers, training schools, ranches, camps, and farms). The survey gathered descriptive data on the demographic characteristics of each victim, the characteristics of the incident, and the characteristics of the juvenile facility in which the suicide took place. The study identified 110 juvenile suicides occurring between 1995 and 1999. Charts and tables.

Book excerpt: The second edition of the Handbook on Prisons provides a completely revised and updated collection of essays on a wide range of topics concerning prisons and imprisonment. Bringing together three of the leading prison scholars in the UK as editors, this new volume builds on the success of the first edition and reveals the range and depth of prison scholarship around the world. The Handbook contains chapters written not only by those who have established and developed prison research, but also features contributions from ex-prisoners, prison governors and ex-governors, prison inspectors and others who have worked with prisoners in a wide range of professional capacities. This second edition includes several completely new chapters on topics as diverse as prison design, technology in prisons, the high security estate, therapeutic communities, prisons and desistance, supermax and solitary confinement, plus a brand new section on international perspectives. The Handbook aims to convey the reality of imprisonment, and to reflect the main issues and debates surrounding prisons and prisoners, while also providing novel ways of thinking about familiar penal problems and enhancing our theoretical understanding of imprisonment. The Handbook on Prisons, Second edition is a key text for students taking courses in prisons, penology, criminal justice, criminology and related subjects, and is also an essential reference for academics and practitioners working in the prison service, or in related agencies, who need up-to-date knowledge of thinking on prisons and imprisonment.

Book excerpt: Written by a leading scholar of juvenile justice, this book examines the social and legal changes that have transformed the juvenile court in the last three decades from a nominally rehabilitative welfare agency into a scaled-down criminal court for young offenders. It explores the complex relationship between race and youth crime to explain both the Supreme Court decisions to provide delinquents with procedural justice and the more recent political impetus to "get tough" on young offenders. This provocative book will be necessary reading for criminal and juvenile justice scholars, sociologists, legislators, and juvenile justice personnel.

Book excerpt: This sophomore/junior level core text is intended for the juvenile delinquency course taught in criminal justice, criminology, and sociology departments at both four year and two year institutions. Taking a sociological approach, Juvenile Delinquency, Tenth Edition, discusses delinquency as it relates to and emerges from the youth's family, neighborhood, school, peer group, social class, and overall cultural and social environment. The author incorporates contributions from sociologists, psychologists, social workers, criminologists, and other specialists who have sought to understand, explain, control, and prevent juvenile delinquency. New to this edition: • All data on delinquents and delinquency derived from FBI Uniform Crime Reports and Juvenile Court Statistics have been updated. • Reports and analyses of contemporary school shootings and other violent youth behavior provide theoretical explanations of cause and suggest preventative measures. The etiology of this phenomenon will be expanded. • The coverage of contemporary integrative theories of juvenile delinquency, including contributions from rational choice, deterrence, and feminist theory, have been expanded. This book is accompanied by a learning package designed to enhance the experience of both instructors and students. Instructor’s Manual and Test Bank. Book excerpt: Youth in Prison tells the story of youths in a "model" juvenile prison program - a program created after a class action lawsuit for inhumane and illegal practices. It captures the lives of these youths inside and outside of prison, from drugs, gangs, and criminal behavior to the realities of families, schools, and neighborhoods. Youth in Prison is a book about all of us: those kept, those charged with their keeping, and the society that demands and condones this imprisonment.

Book excerpt: Details the wealth of new knowledge about the causes and cures for delinquency and youth violence that has been generated by researchers and practitioners over the past 2 decades, including powerful new models that are dramatically reducing recidivism by youthful offenders and the onset of delinquency by high-risk youth. Examines 2 popular notions: that youth crime is growing worse due to a generation of "juvenile superpredators" and that "adult time for adult crime" should be the basis for juvenile crime policy. Looks in detail at our nation's juvenile justice systems and our varied efforts to prevent delinquency and violence. Includes recommendations.

Book excerpt: This report from the United States Surgeon General is the result of a review of the scientific literature and analyses of new data relating to youth violence. It identifies and quantifies factors, in particular settings of combinations, that increase the probability that violence will occur. It also presents an array of interventions of well-documented effectiveness in helping young people whose lives are already marked by a propensity for violence as well as in preventing others from viewing violence as a solution to needs, wants, or problems. This report is divided into six chapters. The first serves as an introduction and offers chapter conclusions for chapters two through five. Those chapters discuss the magnitude of youth violence; the developmental dynamics of youth violence; risk factors for youth violence; and prevention and intervention. The final chapter examines a vision for the future. Each chapter includes a list of references. The executive summary of this report is included in a separate booklet. (Contains an index.) (MKA)

Book excerpt: Violence among youth in public schools is one of America’s most pressing concerns. Once thought to be something only inner-city schools faced, it has spread to suburban and rural schools. There are no easy solutions to the problem, but this book explores what administrators and other school officials can do to structure school safety programs to curb student violence. An introduction provides information and statistics about the causes of school violence. Chapter One considers government legislation and resulting initiatives to reduce youth violence and improve classroom discipline. Chapter Two covers strategies for building a school safety program, and offers recommended and tested approaches for creating safety initiatives. Chapter Three provides additional information about school-wide strategies and presents model programs that can be implemented at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Chapter Four examines character-building educational programs and discusses training for teachers and parents. Chapter Five is a directory of organizations, alliances, centers, professional development groups, publications, and websites dealing with school safety.
