Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume shows how to use both diagnostic and behavioral assessment knowledgeably and effectively throughout the process of treatment. The two traditions have developed along separate paths--each with its own conceptual underpinnings and psychometric strengths. Used together, they can produce a complete picture of a child's or adolescent's needs and strengths. The expert editors and contributors describe the full range of evidence-based assessment tools and illustrate their application with two intake-to-termination case examples, both based on DSM-5. Reproducible tools include a behavioral recording form and a multipage case conceptualization worksheet that can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11" size.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of young children's development and learning has recently taken on new importance. Private and government organizations are developing programs to enhance the school readiness of all young children, especially children from economically disadvantaged homes and communities and children with special needs. Well-planned and effective assessment can inform teaching and program improvement, and contribute to better outcomes for children. This book affirms that assessments can make crucial contributions to the improvement of children's well-being, but only if they are well designed, implemented effectively, developed in the context of systematic planning, and are interpreted and used appropriately. Otherwise, assessment of children and programs can have negative consequences for both. The value of assessments therefore requires fundamental attention to their purpose and the design of the larger systems in which they are used. Early Childhood Assessment addresses these issues by identifying the important outcomes for children from birth to age 5 and the quality and purposes of different techniques and instruments for developmental assessments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After many "out-of-print" years, this volume has been reissued in response to an increasing demand for copies. This reflects that the fundamental questions that motivated this book thirty years ago are still being asked. But more important, the answers -- or at least their outlines -- now seem to be in sight. In 1968, this book stood as an expression of a paradigm crisis in its critique of the state of personality psychology. The last three decades have been filled with controversy and debate about the dilemmas raised here, and then with renewal and fresh discoveries. It therefore seems especially timely to revisit the pages which posed the challenges. Mischel outlined the need to encompass the situation in the study of personality, but with a focus on the acquired meaning of stimuli and on the situation as perceived, viewing the individual as a cognitive-affective being who construes, interprets, and transforms the stimulus in a dynamic reciprocal interaction with the social world. He focused on the idiographic analysis of personality that had originally motivated the field, and the complexity, discriminative facility, and uniqueness of the individual, and sought to connect the expressions of personality to the individual's behavior -- that is, to what people do and not just what they say. Even the intrinsically contextualized "if...then..." expressions of the personality system -- its essential behavioral signatures -- were foreshadowed in this book that fired the opening salvo in a search for "a truly dynamic personality psychology."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, the objective of this volume was to provide a clear and comprehensive review of the literature in the area of adolescents and the MMPI based on the research studies that had occurred in the previous 40 years. It was written to provide the reader with an appreciation and understanding of the research that had occurred, as well as to highlight areas in which crucial research had essentially not occurred, such as systematic and ongoing investigations of the accuracy of clinical descriptive statements for adolescents based on adolescent and adult correlate data. The volume also attempts to provide a developmental perspective through which to understand adolescent response patterns as well as a clear discussion of the empirical implications of using adult and adolescent norm conversions for adolescent respondents. A series of direct, concrete recommendations are offered for the scoring and interpretation of adolescent response patterns, along with the empirical foundations on which these suggestions are based. Finally, this book provides a description of norm development projects at the time and future research directions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making a psychiatric diagnosis in children can be challenging: some clinicians say the incidence of some childhood disorders, such as bipolar disorder and ADHD, is over-diagnosed while others say they are undiagnosed, undertreated, and are a large burden on society. The drug treatment of child psychiatric disorders can also be controversial in children and adolescents. Clinical Child Psychiatry fills the need for an objective, clinically relevant source to dispel this confusion.

Book excerpt: Assessment of Young Children with Special Needs, Second Edition helps prepare teachers for the task of evaluating the skills of infants, toddlers, and preschool children with developmental delays and those considered at risk to experience developmental delays or difficulties. A child’s environment is a critical consideration when focusing on assessment, and authors Susan Benner and Joan Grim explore the important issues of family resources, health, multidimensional environmental influences, economic deprivation, and domestic violence on infant and child development. This textbook conveys a sense of respect for parents, the powerful influence assessment results can and do have in the lives of young children with special needs, and an understanding of the complexity of child development, progression, and measurement. This book sets the tone for important values and beliefs to honor throughout one’s professional life. This fully revised edition addresses recent legislation, updated versions of assessment, and the newest assessment tools that teachers will come across. The popular full-length case studies of the first edition have been updated, and vignettes of other cases are fully integrated across chapters, bringing the text alive with meaning. Assessment of Young Children with Special Needs, Second Edition now includes expanded discussion on progress monitoring and response to intervention, functional behavioral analysis, pros and cons of norm-referenced testing, web-based gathering tools, ELL students, and screening for autism.
