Book excerpt: In An Artists Model and Other Poems, preferring to portray his modela woman with whom he has fallen in lovein words rather than in paint, author David J. Murray off ers an extended hymn of praise to her, expressing unresolved yearning throughout. Following a prologue setting the scene, he presents her with four gifts, each consisting of a set of twelve poems. Th e fi rst set of poems describes what its like spending Christmas without her; the second set of poems compares her to the Greek goddess Athena; the third set of poems likens her to a ballerina; and the fourth set of poems, written in summer, compares her to the beauty of the season. Between each set are entractes consisting of several poems that comment on the complexities of their situation. Th e collection ends with an epilogue that recalls the mood of the prologue. Reflecting the conflict between Murrays emotions and his sense of propriety with regard to his model, An Artists Model and Other Poems presents a cycle of poems that are unabashedly of the high-fl ung romantic genre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Apology For all the irritations Ive caused you, Im sorry; in a mirror, My eyes might glisten with tears of fear and remorse. For being an onerous burden upon you, Im sorry; in a drama, Id movingly exit, the back of my hand on my brow ... It is no secret that unrequited love is the most difficult kind of love there is in life. In An Apology and Other Poems, seasoned poet David J. Murray extends a lyrical apology to the heroine who inspired his writing of four previous compilations and may not have welcomed the attention. In his tenth volume of poems, Murray covers a wide variety of themes that reflect on both the personal and abstract as he explores feelings of humiliation, fear and hope as well as the issues associated with aging, inequality and moral scruples. Throughout his compilation, Murray shares poetry composed in a variety of styles that use both traditional metrical schemes and free verse to convey his thoughts and feelings about life, love and the future. An Apology and Other Poems shares one mans journey as he reflects on unanswered love, expresses remorse for his actions and hopes for forgiveness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer and early fall of 2015, the warmest September ever recorded in Toronto, a widow and a widower made an unusual connection. Following their meeting for the first time as single people, the pair began visiting each other, either at his place in Toronto or at her place in the Quebec countryside. They also travelled as sightseers to Montreal and to Kingston and attended a wedding at a vacation resort. Summer in September and Other Poems emerged from that connection, a collection of poetry written from the widower to his friend and including several poems written by her in response. Featuring ten topical sections, these verses recall the poets deceased spouses, consider their various travels both together and separately and explore ideas of romance, nature, old age, praise and sleep. Short and compelling, the poems of this collection offer an intriguing view of romance following grief. Surfacing Socializing here, alone, was fun, But Ive been impatient to have it over and done And let my undermind, obsessed with you, Surface at last, lucid, untrammeled and true, Until it vies with the hillscape I see here In producing sonic colours, pure and clear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At last recovered in this enriching annotated edition, this important but neglected work of American modernism offers a unique poetic encounter with the Jewish communities in New York’s Lower East Side. Long forgotten on account of her gender and left-wing politics, Lola Ridge is finally being rediscovered and read alongside such celebrated contemporaries as Hart Crane, William Carlos Williams, and Marianne Moore—all of whom knew her and admired her work. In her time Ridge was considered one of America’s leading poets, but after her death in 1941 she and her work effectively disappeared for the next seventy-five years. Her book The Ghetto and Other Poems, is a key work of American modernism, yet it has long, and unjustly, been neglected. When it was first published in 1918—in an abbreviated version in The New Republic, then in full by B. W. Huebsch five months later—The Ghetto and Other Poems was a literary sensation. The poet Alfred Kreymbourg, in a Poetry Magazine review, praised “The Ghetto” for its “sheer passion, deadly accuracy of versatile images, beauty, richness, and incisiveness of epithet, unfolding of adventures, portraiture of emotion and thought, pageantry of pushcarts—the whole lifting, falling, stumbling, mounting to a broad, symphonic rhythm.” Louis Untermeyer, writing in The New York Evening Post, found “The Ghetto” “at once personal in its piercing sympathy and epical in its sweep. It is studded with images that are surprising and yet never strained or irrelevant; it glows with a color that is barbaric, exotic, and as local as Grand Street.” The long title poem is a detailed and sympathetic account of life in the Jewish Ghetto of New York’s Lower East Side, with particular emphasis on the struggles and resilience of women. The subsequent section, “Manhattan Lights,” delves further into city life and immigrant experience, illuminating life in the Bowery. Other poems stem from Ridge’s lifelong support of the American labor movement, and from her own experience as an immigrant. This critical edition seeks to recover the attention The Ghetto, and Other Poems, and in particular the title poem, lost after Ridge’s death. The poems in the volume are as aesthetically strong as they are historically revealing. Their language combines strength and directness with startling metaphors, and their form embraces both panoramic sweep and lyrical intensity. Expertly edited and annotated by Lawrence Kramer, this first modern edition to reproduce the full 1918 publication of The Ghetto and Other Stories offers all the background and context needed for a rich, informed reading of Lola Ridge’s masterpiece.

Accompanied by biographical information on the poet and end-of-chapter questions for further study, Llanas closely examines each poem, including detailed analysis of form, content, poetic technique, and theme, encouraging readers to develop the tools to understand and appreciate poetry.

This omission is surprising since the genre influenced the Surrealist invention of poesie synthetique as well as many writers who followed Apollinaire, trying to reconcile poetry and criticism.

Book excerpt: This book examines the function of repetition in the work of Walt Whitman, Wallace Stevens and John Ashbery. All three poets extensively employ and comment upon the effects of repetition, yet represent three distinct poetics, considerably removed from one another in stylistic and historical terms. At the same time, the three are engaged in a highly interesting relation to each other - a relation readers tend to explain in terms of repetition, by positing Whitman and Stevens as the two alternative 'beginnings' out of which Ashbery emerges. Krystyna Mazur analyses the work of the three poets to discern patterns that may operate across a relatively broad spectrum of examples, as well as to consider the variety of ways in which repetition can structure a poetic text.
