Book excerpt: This reissue of three early essays on Mimbres archaeology and design fills a major gap in the literature on the Mimbres, whose pottery has long fascinated students of the prehistoric Southwest. Fewkes, one of the eminent archaeologists of the early twentieth century, introduced Mimbres art to scholars when he published these essays with the Smithsonian Institution between 1914 and 1924, under the titlesArchaeology of the Lower Mimbres Valley, New Mexico, Designs on Prehistoric Pottery from the Mimbres Valley, New Mexico, andAdditional Designs on Prehistoric Mimbres Pottery.Long out-of-print, these essays represent the first analysis and description of the complex abstract and representational designs that continue to fascinate us 2,000 years after they were painted.

Book Synopsis America's National Game by : Albert G. Spalding
Download or read book America's National Game written by Albert G. Spalding and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is in great demand by baseball enthusiasts. Having been connected with every department of the game from player to magnate, Mr. Spalding has contributed a very important work to the game's history. As the invincible pitcher of the Boston Club, previous to the formation of the National League, his book of so many pages is an interesting record of events dating from the beginning of the great American pastime. It is not exactly a history of the game, but deals largely with incidents during the author's career, who was a player in the late 1860s and early 1870s, and helped organize the National League in 1876. One chapter, devoted to sundry topics, gives an account of the sale of the immortal "King Kelly," the original "$10,000 beauty," by Chicago to the Boston Club in the late 1880s. Other Chapters are devoted to the literature of the game, quoting several instances of the baseball paragrapher's art and also specimens of the distinct poetry of the pastime, of which "Casey at the Bat" is probably the most widely known. The Cincinnati Red Stockings Mr. Spalding gives credit as being the pioneer professional organization. It was not, however, until 1871 that professional baseball playing, as recognized today, was instituted. Mr. Spalding shows how cricket could not do for Americans. He says it is suitable for the British temperament, but not for the Yankee hustling spirit. He also tells how he worked into the game through a one-handed catch when a small boy. To lovers of baseball, whose name is legion, and whose number increases yearly, this book comprises in itself a whole library of useful information.

Download or read book Gemmology written by P. G. Read and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gemmology is a text for students preparing for the Gemmological Association's Preliminary and Diploma examinations. The book is more expansive and up-to-date than the author's earlier book, Beginner's Guide to Gemmology. The book deals with the practical and theoretical sides of gemmology. Tracing the background and science of gemmology, the book covers the gem material, geological formation, and occurrence of gemstones on the earth. The composition of gemstones from the atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds comprising them is analyzed, and the relationship between chemical composition and durability of the stone is explained. The basics of crystallography is mentioned as a tool toward understanding gemmology after which cleavage, parting, and fracture are done. A gemstone's durability and hardness and how the latter influences engineering tests and the mining techniques are compared. An important test technique to identify unmounted stones is the measure of specific gravity using displacement measurement methods and hydrostatic methods. After more descriptive details are given in identification of gemstones, whether these are synthetic or simulants, through a comprehensive explanation of the materials found in these other gemstones, the fashioning, through shaping or polishing, of gemstones is explained. Emphasis is given on the critical angle in which light rays pass in different rock densities, and then the cutting styles, gemstone polishing, and grading are discussed. Students studying for the Gemmological Association's Preliminary and Diploma examinations, jewelers, lapidarists, and diamond cutters, as well as those engaged in the hobby of gemmology, will find this book helpful and full of information toward their endeavors and hobbies.

Download or read book Artificial Gemstones written by Michael O'Donoghue and published by Robert Hale. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title is now in paperback for the first time.Artificial gemstones have been well established in the trade for some time, but now, following further refinements in their manufacture, gemmologists worldwide are facing increasing problems with identification.Today, gem-quality synthetic diamonds, once deemed impossible to produce, are becoming widely available, and, moreover, it is possible to create almost any major gemstone in whatever colour is desired. Then, too, the growth of diamonds by chemical vapour deposition is destined to present further problems. The synthetic products of the past, particularly of the 1960s, are still available, and are puzzling the newer generations of gemmologists who have not encountered them previously. In "Artificial Gemstones", Michael O'Donoghue provides the definitive guide to the various manmade substitutes thus enabling anyone handling gems to identify them accurately. Starting with the theory of synthetic gem manufacture and an explanation of the production methods used for growing and/or improving crystals - with their ornamental application - the book moves on to list and identify the materials themselves. Some of these have natural counterparts; others are new minerals and do not occur in nature. The author lists the identifying internal and external features and tests, and the book contains colour illustrations to display the inclusions found in transparent materials. The book is completed by an extensive bibliography and a useful appendix of trade names.Gemmologists, gem dealers, lapidaries, curators, amateurs and students of gemmology and mineralogy will all find this an indispensable addition to their bookshelves.
