Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Aramaic Method, Vol. 2: A Class Book for the Study of the Elements of Aramaic From Bible and Targums; Elements of Grammar In the following brief outline, the writer is indebted especially to Drs. Berliner, Kautzsch and Levy, in their recently published works, and to Dr. Burnham, in addition to such aid, for the trans lation of Genesis I. Given in the Appendix and for many useful suggestions. The author cannot refrain from expressing his grati fication that, for rejection of the term Chaldee from the title page of his Met/10d, he can now refer to the distinguished authority of Professor Kautzsch. No apology is needed for the issue of this brief grammar. The number of students using the reading-book, even Without this part, has exceeded the author's most sanguine expectations. This fact, however, has forced him to write grammatical notes which have been necessarily prepared in great haste, and an apology is needed for their grave imperfections. It can be regretted by no one more than by the writer that an exhaustive examination of the latest edition of Onkelos has not been possible to him. Serious question arose, whether these notes should be printed at all, until such an examination had been made, but the necessity for something of the sort seemed imperative. Book excerpt: Since the second edition of this book appeared in 1954, two major discoveries in the field of Aramaic studies—the Qumran texts and the Neofiti Targum—have been made available to scholars. These, along with some important publications on the subject, have made this third edition necessary. The book has been completely revised and reset and the supplementary notes of the second edition incorporated in the text; a new chapter has been added to take account of the implications of the new discoveries for previous views about the language of Jesus. Those parts of the book dealing with Acts have been revised and supplemented in the light of Dr. Max Wilcox’s important book on the Semitisms of Acts; and an Appendix by Dr. Geza Vermes, Reader in Jewish Studies in Oxford, has been added containing fresh evidence for the use of the expression “son of man” in Palestinian Aramaic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to examine the Aramaic dimension of Q since the Aramaic Dead Sea scrolls made such work more feasible. Maurice Casey gives a detailed examination of key passages in Matthew and Luke's gospels, demonstrating that they used two different Greek translations of an Aramaic source, which can be reconstructed. He overturns the conventional model of Q as a single Greek document, and shows that Jesus said everything in the original Aramaic source. Further analysis of other gospel passages shows the evangelists editing a Greek translation of an Aramaic source. On one, it can be shown that Mark utilises a different Aramaic source. A complex model of Q is thus proposed. Casey argues that Aramaic sources behind part of Q are of extremely early date, and should contribute significantly to the quest for the historical Jesus.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the student to the textual study of the Hebrew Bible--to help such a student "perceive the work of the numberless and nameless scribes torn between tradition and fashion in their restrained attempts to update the orthography of Scripture." Sixteen essays serve as the bridge from older methods for the study of orthography to newer ones, using the computer to analyze large bodies of text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1990s, about two thousand Idumean Aramaic ostraca have found their way into museums, libraries, and private collections. Four major publications covering some of these texts have appeared, three of which encompass the ostraca held by individual collectors only. This multivolume work classifies the ostraca according to subject matter and brings them together in a single publication. Volumes 1 and 2 covered fifty personal name dossiers (TAO A1-50). Volume 3 contains more than two hundred more such dossiers (TAO A51-255a) and numerous fragments. Each text is accompanied by a color photograph and hand-copy, a facing transcription and translation, and a ceramic description and commentary. The translation uniquely provides marginal captions identifying the phrases. In addition to the presentation of individual texts, there are six dossiers of tables covering all the commodity chits, parallel tables that classify them according to month or size, and comparative lists of entries. Textbook of Aramaic Ostraca from Idumea is a unique source for the onomastics and the social and economic history of fourth-century Idumea and, by extension, Judah (Yehud).
