Book excerpt: An approximate theoretical procedure is presented which may be used to estimate the dynamic plastic response of arbitrarily shaped shells. The influence of finite-deflections is retained in the analysis, but material elasticity, strain hardening and strain rate sensitivity are disregarded. The two particular cases of a complete spherical shell which is subjected to a spherically symmetric pressure pulse and a fully clamped cylindrical shell loaded impulsively are considered in some detail. It is observed that the predictions for these two cases agree favourably with the results of more exact rigid-plastic theories. (Author).

Book excerpt: A comparison is made between the predictions of an approximate theoretical rigid-plastic procedure and some experimental values of the permanent deflections of hemispherical shells and cylindrical shell panels loaded impulsively. The initial kinetic energy of the dynamic loads in these tests was considerably larger than the maximum amount of strain energy which the shells could absorb in a wholly elastic manner. It emerged that reasonable agreement was obtained for the strain rate insensitive shells examined which should provide encouragement for the further development of these approximate procedures. Book excerpt: An approximate theoretical procedure was developed in order to estimate the permanent transverse deflections of beams and arbitrarily shaped plates which are subjected to large dynamic loads. The influence of finite-deflections or geometry changes is retained in the analysis but elastic effects are disregarded. The particular case of a fully clamped rectangular plate acted on by a uniformly distributed dynamic pressure pulse is studied in some detail. It is observed that reasonable agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results were obtained for beams and rectangular plates which were made from a strain-rate insensitive material. Book excerpt: Mechanical engineering, an engineering discipline forged and shaped by the needs of the industrial revolution, is once again asked to do its substantial share in the call for industrial renewal. The general call is urgent as we face profound issues of productivity and competitiveness that require engineering solutions, among others . The Mechanical Engineering Series features graduate texts and research monographs intended to address the need for information in contemporary areas of mechanical engineering. The series is conceived as a comprehensive one that covers a broad range of c- centrations important to mechanical engineering graduate education and research . We are fortunate to have a distinguished roster of consulting editors on the ad- sory board, each an expert in one of the areas of concentration . The names of the consulting editors are listed on the facing page of this volume . The areas of conc- tration are applied mechanics, biomechanics, computational mechanics, dynamic systems and control, energetics , mechanics of materials, processing, production systems, thermal science, and tribology .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on the impact response of lightweight sandwich structures. As a kind of lightweight structure, sandwich structure has been widely used in various engineering fields, such as aerospace, ships, vehicles and so on, because of its high specific stiffness, high specific strength and versatility. During service, the sandwich structures may be subjected to various impact loads, which may result in serious damage, thereby reducing the stiffness, strength and load-bearing ca-pacity, thereby shortening the service life and bringing safety hazards. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of impact behavior and failure mechanisms is of great significance for the wider application of sandwich structures. In the past decades, many scholars have conducted in-depth research on related topics. But it is difficult for readers to systematically read all the literature in a short time. This book seeks to succinctly summarize the development and the results achieved in this field. This book focuses on simple, classical structures, such as beams, plates, and shells, under loads such as low-velocity impact, explosive load, and bullet penetrations. The main research methods are theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and experimental investigation. The purpose is to reveal the deep mechanism and lay a foundation for the application of sandwich structure in engineering practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defining equations for a rigid/perfectly plastic shell are derived from basic principles. On the basis of a single geometric assumption for the velocity field, generalized strain rates and stresses are defined and equilibrium relations deduced. Shell yield conditions and flow law are discussed in general terms and then specifically for piecewise linear yield conditions. Preceding the general shell problem, the theory of beams under bending and axial forces is discussed to give a general insight into plastic structural behavior. The paper closes with an application to cylindrical shells and a discussion of areas for future development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Impact is concerned with the behaviour of structures and components subjected to large dynamic, impact and explosive loads which produce inelastic deformations. It is of interest for safety calculations, hazard assessments and energy absorbing systems throughout industry. The first five chapters introduce the rigid plastic methods of analysis for the static behaviour and the dynamic response of beams, plates and shells. The influence of transverse shear, rotatory inertia, finite displacements and dynamic material properties are introduced and studied in some detail. Dynamic progressive buckling, which develops in several energy absorbing systems, and the phenomenon of dynamic plastic buckling are introduced. Scaling laws are discussed which are important for relating the response of small-scale experimental tests to the dynamic behaviour of full-scale prototypes. This text is invaluable to undergraduates, graduates and professionals learning about the behaviour of structures subjected to large impact, dynamic and blast loadings producing an inelastic response.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of interest to engineers from civil, military, nuclear, offshore, aeronautical, transportation and other backgrounds, this book contains the proceedings of a well-established conference on the subject that was first held in 1989. Topics covered include: Impact and Blast Loading Characteristics; Protection of Structures from Blast Loads; Energy Absorbing Issues; Structural Crashworthiness; Hazard Mitigation and Assessment; Behaviour of Steel Structures; Behaviour of Structural Concrete; Material Response to High Rate Loading; Seismic Engineering Applications; Interaction Between Computational and Experimental Results; Innovative Materials and Material Systems; Fluid Structure Interaction. The shock and impact behaviour of structures presents challenges to researchers not only because it has obvious time-dependent aspects, but also because it is difficult to specify the external dynamic loading characteristics and to obtain the full dynamic properties of materials. It is crucial that we find ways to share the contributions and understanding that are developing from various theoretical, numerical and experimental studies, as well as investigations into material properties under dynamic loading conditions. This book helps to meet that need.
