Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Appeal of the Nation: Five Patriotic Addresses Four of the five Addresses that follow were printed separately by the Old South Society, for free distribution. Although the editions printed were large, they are now practically exhausted, and the demand continues. It has seemed to those in charge of this matter that the collection of these Addresses in a single inexpensive volume, with the addition of a fifth, delivered Good Friday evening, Apr'l 6, 1917, and here published for the first time, might continue to serve the'cause of good citizen ship at this critical hour in our history. To this appeal I have been unable to withhold consent. Although spoken from the pulpit on Sunday mornings, with the exception above noted, I have called these utterances Addresses rather than Sermons, because the text selected is used more as a sacred motto for the ideas presented and less as governing the entire movement of thought. This distinction holds less, if at all, in the second and third Addresses than in the other three. The descriptive name matters little, however, since it raises merely a point in professional usage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Perils of the Nation: An Appeal to the Legislature, the Clergy, and the Higher and Middle Classes "The danger is wider, deeper, fiercer," said Lord Ashley in a late debate in the House of Commons, "and no one who has heard these statements, and believes them, can hope that twenty years more will pass without some mighty convulsion, some displacement of the whole system of society." These words had, indeed, a peculiar application to the existing want of education among the labouring classes; but no one would be less disposed than their noble author, to limit his view to a single point, when contemplating the whole condition of the country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Nation, a History, Vol. 20: The Appeal to Arms, 1861 1863 An immense literature has grown up which bears on the American Civil War, including several profound and voluminous histories of the whole period; yet neither upon the military nor the civil side of the Civil War is there available a work at once brief, compact, and impartial. This volume and its successor in the series - The Outcome of the Civil War - aim to supply this lack. Admiral Chadwick's Causes of the Civil War (American Nation, XIX.), combines with the two volumes to tell the political and military story from the first threat of hostilities to the end of the war. Professor Dunning's Reconstruction, Political and Economic (American Nation, XXII.), shows the constitutional and social results of the struggle. The point of view of the author of the two volumes distinctively on the Civil War is that of a participant in the campaigns, and a friend of many officers on both sides, who relates the story not as a victory of the United States over a national enemy, but as a part of the history of the whole people, both North and South. When a pulalic journal of the South shall respond to a journal of the North - You are wrong to say that we regard Slavery as a curse, or that we look forward with equal ansie ty with yourselves, for a day of emancipation. The South views Slavery as an expedient - as a necessary institution and believes it the eternal destiny of the negro population - not only of these States, but of the world - whether by the fiat of nature, or revealed law, to live in bondage to the white. I say when this is the case, it is time that a clear and philosophic exposition of our reasons for so believing, should be candidly submitted to public investigation and this - that our friends may be friends in truth, and not after the fantasies of their own brains.
