Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Appeal to the Medical Profession of the United States While at the same time the least sagacious could have seen that should he raise his bristles, they were ready to crouch to him, with a sycophancy at which oriental adulation would blush. While things were in this condition, and even before, I emphatically declared to many individuals that I would not submit to the dictation of Dr. Dudley, and that the moment I received positive proof that the proper concessions were not to be expected from him, I would resign. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Edition of an Appeal to the Medical Profession of the United States: Together With an Analysis and Refutation of the "Statements of Facts in Relation to the Expulsion of James C. Cross From the Transylvania University" I repeat, that while 1 am aware I shall have no more chance in this community than pain a discretion, in the hands of a French man, I would have been content to suffer in silence, until my sppeal could have been made under better auspices, but this has not been permitted. The conduct of my tormentors and persecutors has been such as to make fur ther forbearance on my part, a criminal and pusillanimous desertion of duty. Since I left it, the Medical Department of Transylvania University has sunk into utter insignificance, and promises soon to enable its enemies to ex claim in insolent triumph Trqja fuit: When it shall have ceased to be, and all knowledge of its existence shall have dwindled into a legend of tradition, I Will be able to say, and with a clear conscience, to the deluded and betrayed people of Lexington. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Appeal to the Public, by Members of the Medical Profession We desire your attention for a moment to a subject that concerns us all. About twelve years ago it was discovered that physical torture was no longer a necessary accompaniment of the surgeon's knife, and that generations yet to be born might come into the world unattended by the pain and dread which had caused tears to flow since the expulsion from Eden that, by a few inspirations of a simple vapor, the most acute pangs of human suffering, whether from wound or sickness, might be quieted and laid asleep. Twelve years of experience have proved this, and that it is one of the greatest medical discoveries the world has ever known. Our National Government, competent institutions, and the great bulk of the medical profession, after most careful and patient investigation, have declared by whom this all-important fact was brought to light and promulgated. Their decision stands unshaken, notwithstanding the most persevering efforts of rival contestants. Yet, strange to say, to this day, it would have been vastly better for its author, his wife, and their children, if he had buried the secret, and permitted ages more to pass before it came to light. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Present-day health care policies in the United States are moving toward a system in which patients will be treated like industrial objects by doctors forced to work mechanically, says the distinguished medical sociologist Eliot Freidson in Medical Work in America. He offers a number of controversial proposals designed both to reduce costs and to avoid such dehumanization. In a series of essays that includes some of his classic work as well as significant new material, Freidson discusses the doctor-patient relationship, relations between physicians in various forms of medical practice, and the forces now reorganizing medical work. He shows how increasingly restrictive health insurance contracts insert a new, problematic element into both doctor-patient and colleague relations, and how bureaucratic methods of controlling medical decisions affect those relations. Finally, Freidson advances some basic principles to guide health care policy. He emphasizes that the physician's freedom to exercise discretion is essential if patients are to be treated as individuals rather than as administratively defined diagnostic categories. His recommendations include eliminating fee-for-service compensation, controlling health industry profits, and limiting the external administrative regulation of medical decisions while organizing medical work in such a way as to maximize effective and responsible self-governance.
