This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text takes a wholly new look at a major early twentieth-century Dutch poet and novelist from the perspective of world literature, situating his work in both a national and a world literary context as measured against contemporaries and near-contemporaries such as Conrad, Pound, Brecht, Segalen, and Malraux. Exemplifying how an author from a “minor” literature may be a “major” world author, this book considers the debates within World Literature regarding the classification of literatures as ‘major’ and ‘minor’, canon formation within Dutch literature, Slauerhoff's position in the Dutch tradition as well as well as his contribution to world literature, particularly focusing on his East Asian poems, his East Asian novels and stories and his poetry and prose set in Latin America. This book is a key read for scholars and students of comparative literature, world literature, European literature, and Dutch literature. Lucid in style, innovative in approach, surprisingly fresh qua topic, this book opens new horizons for literary studies.

Translated from the Dutch by Paul Vincent and John Irons. 100 DUTCH-LANGUAGE POEMS is a lovely selection of poems written in the Dutch language from the 11th century to the present day. For the poetry lover it is a comprehensive introduction to poetry from the Low Countries and provides a wonderful insight into the themes and issues that influenced generations of poets. The Dutch language and English translations are presented side by side making it a great resource for literature and language students and scholars. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens From the Dutch Poets: With Original Poems The writer of these 'specimens', would had his own reputation alone been concerned have thrown himself upon the mercy of the Public, without a single word of preface. But the fact, that other names than his own appear on his title-page and index compels him to venture a few prefatory remarks. He believes that he can at least assume to himself the first of the four requisites, which he has named, for an attempt upon the patience of readers. He presents to the English Public, 'specimens from the Dutch Poets.' Dutch Poets he can fancy he hears the reader of his title-page exclaim what an anomaly! Are there such beings, in the aqueous land of dykes, and fogs, and cheese? Yes, gentle reader, such beings there are in this land, many in number, and often most voluminous in their productions. And a residence of some years in this country, has convinced the writer, that many of the poems of men, whose very names have never been heard in England, are worthy of a far more extended reputation than they at present enjoy. This conviction has urged him, to present a few 'specimens' to English readers. They are mere specimens and are gathered, with the single exception of the 'hymn to God', from the 'lucifer' of van Vondel the great contemporary of Milton from works published in the present century, and, for the greater part, are the productions of poets still living. Book excerpt: Since Henry Hudson landed on Manhattan in 1609, the peoples of the Netherlands and North America have been inextricably linked. Four Centuries of Dutch-American Relations, written by a team of nearly one hundred Dutch and American scholars, is the first book to offer a comprehensive history of this bilateral relationship. This volume covers the main paths of contacts, conflicts, and common plans, from the first exploratory contacts in the early seventeenth century to the intense and multifaceted exchanges in the early twenty-first. Based on the most up-to-date research, Four Centuries of Dutch-American Relations will be for years to come a valuable and much-used reference work for anyone interested in the history and culture of the United States and the Netherlands and the larger transatlantic interdependent framework in which they are embedded.

Book excerpt: In all six of its volumes The Broadview Anthology of British Literature presents British literature in a truly distinctive light. Fully grounded in sound literary and historical scholarship, the anthology takes a fresh approach to many canonical authors, and includes a wide selection of work by lesser-known writers. The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations throughout, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials, offering additional perspectives both on individual texts and on larger social and cultural developments. Innovative, authoritative, and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature embodies a consistently fresh approach to the study of literature and literary history. The full Broadview Anthology of British Literature comprises six bound volumes, together with an extensive website component; the latter has been edited, annotated, and designed according to the same high standards as the bound book component of the anthology, and is accessible through the broadviewpress.come website by using the passcode obtained with the purchase of one or more of the bound volumes. Highlights of Volume 6: The Twentieth Century and Beyond include: Joseph Conrad’s “The Secret Sharer,” “An Outpost of Progress,” an essay on the Titanic, and a substantial range of background materials, including documents on the exploitation of central Africa that set “An Outpost of Progress” in vivid context; and a large selection of late twentieth and early twenty-first century writers such as Ian McEwan, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Zadie Smith. For the convenience of those whose focus does not extend to the full period covered in the final volume of The Broadview Anthology of British Literature (Volume 6: The Twentieth Century and Beyond), that volume is now available either in its original one-volume format or in this alternative two-volume format, with Volume 6a (The Early Twentieth Century) extending to the end of WWII, and Volume 6b (The Late Twentieth Century and Beyond) covering from WWII into the present century.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of twelve articles from the 1995 Berkeley Conference on Dutch Literature, ranging from critical essays on post-war Dutch poets as well as a re-examination of the current literary history of Dutch poetry. It deals with new currents in Dutch poetry, presented by American, Dutch, and Flemish netherlandists. It will be of interest to literary scholars beyond the field of Dutch poetry, since there is a strong comparative component to it; comparing Dutch with non-Dutch poetry.
