This directory is an attempt to collect together information about such bands and make it available to all. Over 19,600 bands are recorded here, with some 10,600 additional cross references for alternative or previous names. This volume supersedes the earlier “British Brass Bands – a Historical Directory” (2016) and includes some 1,400 bands from the island of Ireland. A separate work is in preparation covering brass bands beyond the British Isles. A separate appendix lists the brass bands in each county

This book was released on 1989 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to describe, in the form of an annotated bibliography, the original works for unaccompanied trumpet published in America. This paper is intended as a pedagogical source, with emphasis on the extended techniques employed in each work. It is hoped that this study will aid in the selection, instruction, and performance of these works. Three periods within the repertoire are identified with regard to the employment of extended techniques; the conservative period, 1963-1969, the experimental period, 1970-1977, and the radical period, 1978-1988. Chapters are divided according to these time delineations, with the works utilizing a significant number of extended techniques appearing before those works with an insignificant number of extended techniques. Each of the works which fall into the category of significant extended techniques is annotated in considerable detail, the annotations being presented in two sections labeled Factual Information, and Analytical Information and Commentary. The Factual Information section includes the composer's name, dates, complete title of the piece, composition date, publisher, publishing date, to whom the work was dedicated and who commissioned it. Also included in this section is information on the first performance of the piece, the approximate length of time required to perform the work, and the instrument intended for performance. Any mutes required for performance, the range of the composition, the name and number of the movements including incipits, the difficulty level of the work, and the extended techniques employed in the piece are also listed. The Analytical Information includes a description of the musical parameters of melody, texture, rhythm and meter, pitch organization, and form. Musical examples are used throughout this section to clarify the text. The Commentary portion of this study describes the extended techniques and unusual performance problems related to the composition. A description of the general tessitura of the work is also included as well as a statement of practicality for performance and any facts or observations not covered in other areas. The works employing an insignificant number of extended techniques proceed the works with a significant number of extended techniques of each period. These solos are cataloged according to difficulty level. The discussion of each of these solos is in paragraph form and covers general aspects of the composition. The fifth chapter of this study, the conclusion, contains a catalog of all the unaccompanied trumpet solos published in America. Lists are also included for grade levels, durations, instruments used, compositional styles, notation systems, and extended techniques. A suggested list of works for recitals and study purposes is also given by the author.

Book excerpt: Many frequently performed solo trumpet works of the past century have been written by French composers. They are played for jury performances, at recitals, and on stage with symphony orchestras to showcase the virtuosic capabilities of trumpeters worldwide. Of the most commonly performed French pieces, very few were written by women. This is not, however, because of an absence of music. A shift in European gender roles spurred by the Second Industrial Revolution and World Wars ignited a significant increase in the number of women composers and the quality of their work. Unfortunately, gendered or lack of public critical review, securing performance past an initial premiere, and balancing home and professional lives significantly impacted the likelihood that pieces by women would be programmed. As a result, most have been forgotten for decades. The purpose of this treatise is to provide a practical point of reference for musicians interested in the morceaux de concours written by women for the trumpet and cornet at the Paris Conservatory during the twentieth century, while also raising questions about why and how certain works are excluded from the standard solo repertoire. The Paris Conservatory is an exceptional institution in that its professors have been composing original works for their students to perform as contest pieces since its inception. Hundreds of works have been composed for dozens of instruments; 171 works have been written for the trumpet and cornet alone. This large repository of music has produced some works that have become standards in the trumpet repertoire, but of the fifteen pieces written by women, none of them has achieved widespread recognition in the form of recordings, publication, and performances. The barriers women faced for centuries still persist today as it remains a challenge to find recordings, scores, and biographical information about women who composed for solo trumpet. This treatise is a first step in addressing this issue.

Book excerpt: Women, Music and Leadership offers a wide-ranging survey of women in musical leadership and their experiences, highlighting women’s achievements and considering how they negotiate the challenges of the leadership space in music. Women have always participated in music as performers, teachers, composers and professionals, but remain underrepresented in leadership positions. Covering women’s leadership across a wide variety of roles and musical genres, this book addresses women in classical music, gospel, blues, jazz, popular music, electronic music and non-Western musical contexts, and considers women working as composers, as conductors, and in music management and the music business. Each chapter includes several case studies of women’s careers, exploring their groundbreaking contributions to music and the challenges they faced as leaders. Connecting management theory and leadership research with feminist musicology, this book paints a new picture of women’s major contributions as leaders in music and their ongoing struggles for equity. It will be relevant to students and scholars in arts and music management, as well as all those studying music, gender or leadership, and women music professionals.

Book excerpt: One of the hallmarks of a trumpet player's performing experience is the thrill of playing solo works for trumpet and piano. Many of the works for solo trumpet and piano regularly performed today have long been considered canonical, and given the history of the trumpet, tend to be European in origin, and representative of past compositional trends and pedagogical approaches. Numerous players seek out works written by newer composers to include on solo recitals and juries. However, this is often a difficult endeavor to undertake, as the majority of existing trumpet repertoire databases and search engines contain older works. The purpose of this project was to create an online, searchable database of compositions written for trumpet and piano by living American composers. The site, www.trumpet-rep.org, was created as a resource for trumpet players of all ages and ability levels, as well as music educators, to serve as a guide for choosing appropriate repertoire. The trumpet-rep database can be searched by composer's name and gender, composition title, range, and number of movements. Other search categories such as the technical challenges/requirements, additional equipment needed, duration of the work, and links to supplementary information for each work are also provided with the search results. Currently, the database includes more than 90 compositions written by 36 composers. This project is ongoing, and works will continue to be added to the database beyond completion of this document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this document is twofold: first, to bring to light pieces by female composers who have written substantial works for the trumpet as a solo or chamber instrument, and second, to expand and diversify the traditional canon of trumpet literature. This dissertation document examines three works for solo trumpet: Good Trouble by Dr. Amy Dunker, Trinculo by Sally Beamish, and Concertstück by Claude Arrieu. All works included in this document have been premiered, and at the time of selection, had not yet been professionally recorded. All composers in this document have written multiple works for trumpet as a solo instrument. This document provides an overview of form analysis, stylistic elements, and performance considerations of these pieces. The form analyses of these pieces do not extensively explore harmonic language as all these pieces are more progressive in tonality, and harmonic analysis is outside the scope of this document. Each analysis chapter discusses relevant historical information, stylistic elements, form analysis, and performance considerations. Performance considerations will discuss any pedagogical benefits as well as a brief discussion of where these pieces would fit into a curriculum. Additionally, a chapter about each composer’s biographical information has been provided. Finally, two appendices have been included. The appendices included are interviews done by the author with composers Dr. Amy Dunker and Sally Beamish. Excerpts will be provided for the reader’s reference.
