Book Synopsis An Annotated Bibliography of Unaccompanied Trumpet Solos Published in America by : Paul Bradley Ulrich
Download or read book An Annotated Bibliography of Unaccompanied Trumpet Solos Published in America written by Paul Bradley Ulrich and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to describe, in the form of an annotated bibliography, the original works for unaccompanied trumpet published in America. This paper is intended as a pedagogical source, with emphasis on the extended techniques employed in each work. It is hoped that this study will aid in the selection, instruction, and performance of these works. Three periods within the repertoire are identified with regard to the employment of extended techniques; the conservative period, 1963-1969, the experimental period, 1970-1977, and the radical period, 1978-1988. Chapters are divided according to these time delineations, with the works utilizing a significant number of extended techniques appearing before those works with an insignificant number of extended techniques. Each of the works which fall into the category of significant extended techniques is annotated in considerable detail, the annotations being presented in two sections labeled Factual Information, and Analytical Information and Commentary. The Factual Information section includes the composer's name, dates, complete title of the piece, composition date, publisher, publishing date, to whom the work was dedicated and who commissioned it. Also included in this section is information on the first performance of the piece, the approximate length of time required to perform the work, and the instrument intended for performance. Any mutes required for performance, the range of the composition, the name and number of the movements including incipits, the difficulty level of the work, and the extended techniques employed in the piece are also listed. The Analytical Information includes a description of the musical parameters of melody, texture, rhythm and meter, pitch organization, and form. Musical examples are used throughout this section to clarify the text. The Commentary portion of this study describes the extended techniques and unusual performance problems related to the composition. A description of the general tessitura of the work is also included as well as a statement of practicality for performance and any facts or observations not covered in other areas. The works employing an insignificant number of extended techniques proceed the works with a significant number of extended techniques of each period. These solos are cataloged according to difficulty level. The discussion of each of these solos is in paragraph form and covers general aspects of the composition. The fifth chapter of this study, the conclusion, contains a catalog of all the unaccompanied trumpet solos published in America. Lists are also included for grade levels, durations, instruments used, compositional styles, notation systems, and extended techniques. A suggested list of works for recitals and study purposes is also given by the author.

Book Synopsis A Dictionary for the Modern Trumpet Player by : Elisa Koehler
Download or read book A Dictionary for the Modern Trumpet Player written by Elisa Koehler and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titles in Dictionaries for the Modern Musician series offer both the novice and the advanced artist key information designed to convey the field of study and performance for a major instrument or instrument class, as well as the workings of musicians in areas from conducting to composing. Unlike other encyclopedic works, contributions to this series focus primarily on the knowledge required by the contemporary musical student or performer. Each dictionary covers topics from instrument parts to playing technique and major works to key figures. A must-have for any musician’s personal library! Trumpeters today perform a vast repertoire of musical material spanning 500 years, much of it in a variety of styles and even on a number of related instruments. In A Dictionary for the Modern Trumpet Player, scholar and performer, Elisa Koehler has created a key reference work that addresses all of the instruments in the high brass family, providing ready answers to issues that trumpeters, conductors, and musicians commonly—and sometimes not so commonly—encounter. Drawing on a broad range of scholarly sources, A Dictionary for the Modern Trumpet Player includes entries on historic instruments like the cornetto, keyed bugle, and slide trumpet; jazz trumpet techniques; mutes and accessories; and ancient ancestors of the trumpet and related non-Western instruments. In addition to its concise and detailed definitions, this work includes biographies of prominent performers, teachers, instrument makers, and composers of trumpet solo and ensemble literature often omitted from other musical references. Carefully labeled illustrations illuminate the inner workings of various valve mechanisms, allowing readers to visualize the more technical points of high brass instruments. Appendixes include a time line of trumpet history, a survey of valve mechanisms, a list of prominent excerpts from the orchestral and operatic repertoire, and an extensive bibliography. From quick definitions of confusing terms in a musical score to an in-depth overview of trumpet history, A Dictionary for the Modern Trumpet Player is an ideal reference for students, professionals, and music lovers.
Book Synopsis Brass Chamber Music in Lyceum and Chautauqua by : Raymond David Burkhart
Download or read book Brass Chamber Music in Lyceum and Chautauqua written by Raymond David Burkhart and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of brass chamber music in lyceum and chautauqua fills a lacuna in brass history. It explores the forgotten phenomenon of the many chamber brass ensembles that entertained millions of Americans from coast to coast from 1877 to 1939 and presents histories of sixty-one ensembles that performed music for brass trio, brass quartet, brass quintet, and brass sextet for lyceum and chautauqua audiences. The author also writes about the large repertoire of music for small brass ensembles that he discovered was published in America from 1875 through the 1920s. This First American Chamber Brass School is discussed in one of five overviews of the principal eras in brass chamber music history that form the most comprehensive history of brass chamber music written in fifty years.
