The next section covers pest management technology, including the use of insecticides, insect viruses, fungal pathogens, growth regulators, antifeedants, pheromones, natural predators, and aerial spraying. The third section contains papers on the application of technology and equipment for forest pest control, and includes papers on the impacts of insecticides on the forest environment. The fourth section describes operational control programs by province. The final paper presents future strategies for the management of forest pests. An author index is included.
Book Synopsis Aphids on the World's Trees by : Roger L. Blackman
Download or read book Aphids on the World's Trees written by Roger L. Blackman and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1994 with total page 1020 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive, species-by-species account of all the world's tree-dwelling aphids. It can be used both as an identification guide by entomologists and taxonomists, and as a database in studies of biosystematics and biodiversity. In all, 1758 aphid species are covered, feeding on trees in 355 genera. There are detailed host lists and illustrated keys to the aphids colonizing each tree genus, followed by a systematic treatment of the aphid species in alphabetical order of genera, with information on appearance in life, host range, distribution, life cycle and natural enemies. There are 722 drawings, 108 photographs and more than 1800 literature references. The volume will be a standard reference for workers in entomology and forestry.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotated bibliography whose purpose is to aid in the development of research initiatives studying forest succession in Ontario by providing a central source of relevant material. Although the focus was on northern forest ecosystems, articles that had application to studying succession in these ecosystems were also included. The bibliography is divided into succession theory, natural succession, role of fire, impacts of harvesting, relationship to nutrient cycling, and modelling. Articles are cross-referenced by subject area. Also included are a list of scientific and common names for plant species, and a list of books, conferences and proceedings associated with forest succession.

Book Synopsis Distribution of Redwood Caused by the Balsam Woolly Aphid in Fraser Fir of North Carolina by : Gene D. Amman
Download or read book Distribution of Redwood Caused by the Balsam Woolly Aphid in Fraser Fir of North Carolina written by Gene D. Amman and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination of 5-foot sections of felled Fraser fir, Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir., trees infested or killed by the balsam woolly aphid, Adelges piceae (Ratzeburg), revealed that the height of the first annual ring of aphid-caused redwood increased as the height of the trees increased. The number of red rings varied from two in a tree 5 inches in d.b.h. to five or six in all trees 9 or more inches in d.b.h., indicating that larger trees can sustain aphid attacks for longer periods before death than can smaller trees.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Biological Control by : A.P. Gutierrez
Download or read book An Introduction to Biological Control written by A.P. Gutierrez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a revision of Biological Control by R. van den Bosch and P. S. Messenger, originally published by Intext Publishers. In the revision, I have attempted to keep the original theme, and to update it with current research findings and new chapters or sections on insect pathology, microbial control of weeds and plant pathogens, population dynamics, integrated pest management, and economics. The book was written as an undergraduate text, and not as a complete review of the subject area. Various more comprehen sive volumes have been written to serve as handbooks for the experts. This book is designed to provide a concise overview of the complex and valuable field of biological control and to show the relationships to the developing concepts of integrated pest management. Population regulation of pests by natural enemies is the major theme of the book, but other biological methods of pest control are also discussed. The chapter on population dynamics assumes a precalculus-level knowledge of mathematics. Author names of species are listed only once in the text, but all are listed in the Appendix. Any errors or omissions in this volume are my sole responsibility. A. P. Gutierrez Professor of Entomology Division of Biological Control University of California, Berkeley vii Acknowledgments Very special thanks must be given to my colleagues, Professors C. B. Huffaker and L. E. Caltagirone, for the very thorough review they provided and for the many positive suggestions they gave. Dr.
Book Synopsis Annotated Keys to the Genera of Nearctic Chalcidoidea (Hymenoptera) by : Gary A. P. Gibson
Download or read book Annotated Keys to the Genera of Nearctic Chalcidoidea (Hymenoptera) written by Gary A. P. Gibson and published by NRC Research Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents illustrated keys to the 19 families and 706 described genera of Chalcidoidea known to occur in the Nearctic region (minimally America north of Mexico, but also including those areas of Mexico generally considered as having a Nearctic insect fauna). The first three chapters provide an introduction to this superfamily of wasps, most of whose members are parasites of other insects; a review of chalcidoid morphology as related to terms used in the keys & diagnoses; and an overview of the superfamily, including a 41 couplet key to families. Each of the remaining 19 chapters reviews one family & includes sections on recognition, systematics & relationships, biology, literature, an annotated key to the Nearctic genera, and for larger families an index to genera based on couplet number. Over 1,800 line drawings & electron micrographs illustrate the keys. Annotations include references to existing keys to species, estimated number of species, and known distribution & host range in the region.
