This book is an effort to show how analysis of the problem can lead to experimental research, and how the conclusions obtained can yield general principles applicable to everyday problems. This volume grew out of what has been called the Conformity Project. The Conformity Project began in informal discussions among a number of its eventual participants. It grew into a formal proposal and became one of several projects supported by a grant from the Ford Foundation to the University of Michigan for encouragement of new work in the social sciences. Formal work started with an interdisciplinary seminar which had as its basic aim the development and testing of a theory to account for the behavior of individuals in groups in general, and conformity behavior in particular. An experimental phase began to develop toward the end of the first year, and by the beginning of the third year the project was almost entirely experimental in character. The original goal of the project was to achieve a synthesis of some of the social science approaches to common problems. The psychologist, the sociologist, and the anthropologist often deal independently with the same problem, and they do so in quite different terms. By choosing the problem of conformity and by working on this problem as a team it was hoped that a new approach to important social problems might emerge. This hope remained largely unfulfilled. What emerged was a simple basic formula which could be elaborated almost endlessly, and into which were fit a relatively small number of concepts. Book Synopsis Elevated Realms - An Anatomy of Mina Loy by : Sara Crangle
Download or read book Elevated Realms - An Anatomy of Mina Loy written by Sara Crangle and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mina Loy has long been recognised as a writer who insists on the primacy of the corporeal. Over two volumes, Sara Crangle excavates how Loy's relationship to the human body was inextricable from her esoteric understanding of the human soul. Elevated Realms is the first study book-length study devoted to Loy's affinities with alternative spiritualities ancient and modern. Aligning Loy's heterodoxies with her vanguardism, this volume considers Loy's engagements with mesmerism, spiritualism and telepathy; enchantment and visionariness; psychoanalysis, philosophy and physics; Christian Science and Theosophy. Attending to Loy's presentations of the upper half of the body - heartscapes, spines, eyes and nerve centres - Elevated Realms unearths the coordinates of Loy's esoteric Eros, a transcendent, orgasmic love that is cosmic, intimate, aesthetic and a corrective to women's disregarded satiation. The requisite counterpart to her acerbic feminist satires, Loy's Eros re-envisions abjectified, feminised posturing as a dorsality with the potential to access the beyond.
Book Synopsis The Anatomy of Fraud and Corruption by : Tomas Brytting
Download or read book The Anatomy of Fraud and Corruption written by Tomas Brytting and published by Gower Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book explores what happens when the fine line between competitive excellence and fraudulent and corrupt practice is crossed. Whilst most fraud literature focuses on the individual perpetrator, The Anatomy of Fraud and Corruption looks at how organizations as a whole and the people within it behave when fraud and corruption occur. By presenting a theoretical basis and a practical methodology for fraud risk awareness training, the book helps risk management professionals, and all those in critical corporate roles to redesign and train their organizations to strengthen their culture and become more resistant and resilient to the ever present threat of fraud and corruption. The Anatomy of Fraud and Corruption demonstrates that what we see as objective facts are not always what they seem. The qualified and uniquely experienced authors present a refreshing interpretation of Cressey's triangle of need, opportunity and rationalization. They employ a drama metaphor to reflect the interaction between fraudsters, victims and bystanders on the organizational stage. Corporate design, management and culture dictate what behaviour is normal or abnormal, whether it be manager and employee behaviour or their ability to become suspicious and question apparently improper actions. Using actual cases and investigations, the organizational conditions that give rise to fraud and corruption are explored. The authors then provide important insights as to how employees may be trained and motivated to reduce the likelihood and impact of fraudulent incidents. Whilst fundamentally a practical guide, this book is also essential reading for academics wanting to stay abreast of the latest developments in the study of ethics, organizational and work psychology and sociology, and criminology.

Book Synopsis The Purple Island by : Phineas Fletcher
Download or read book The Purple Island written by Phineas Fletcher and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phineas Fletcher’s epic allegorical poem The Purple Island (1633) combines anatomical and devotional perspectives on the self as the poet explores the relationship between body and soul. The titular island is figured as both body and as England, thus merging religious, corporeal, devotional, and geo-national narratives. The present critical edition offers the first fresh editorial approach to the poem in over a century and situates the poem in its historical and critical contexts. Although the poem has often been regarded as a bizarre and fragmented curiosity, Johnathan H. Pope compellingly argues in favour of a more unified reading and understanding of the text as a whole, offering a newly-annotated edition that illuminates the text for both the Fletcher specialist and newcomer alike.
