Book excerpt: Despite improvements in road safety, young drivers continue to be over-represented in crashes. CASR has conducted three in-depth studies investigating rural and metropolitan crashes in South Australia over the last decade. In-depth investigation of crashes provides very detailed information on crashes that otherwise could not be obtained from aggregate police-reported crash data. To gain a better understanding of the specific factors that lead to young driver crash involvement, this study used the comprehensive information collected from in-depth crash investigation to examine the causes and contributing factors leading to young driver crashes. Analyses by age group and level of experience were undertaken to determine whether the incidence of specific driver errors varied over the first few years of driving and could account for the substantial decline in crashes during that time. The study also examined specific driver errors and contributing factors associated with young driver risk-taking behaviour and with those who made simple mistakes or errors that lead to crash involvement. Detailed information for 256 drivers aged between 16 and 24 years was examined to identify behaviours contributing to young driver crash involvement. Based on findings from the analysis, measures that might reduce the incidence and severity of young driver crashes are discussed within a safe system framework.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of a young problem driver sub group, that is a sub group who operates at a (substantially) higher tha average crash risk and thus contribute disproportionatel to young driver crashes is often proposed. This report presents a literature review and mass crash data analyses and proposes a conceptual framework comprising crash risk, crash frequencies, crash countermeasures and countermeasure priorities to assist (policy) discussion of this issue. On the basis of information presented, it was concluded that action designed to focus specific attention on young problem drivers should be accorded low priority relative to the development and implementation of other young driver safety initiatives. Risk taking. Statistical models. Road accidents. Road safety countermeasures. Driver behaviour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The goal of this research project was to develop a methodology to assist the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) in the evaluation of effectiveness of teen driver education programs over the short and long terms. The research effort was divided into two phases. Phase I focused on the development of an evaluative methodology that was based upon a review of the relevant literature and Wisconsin-specific policies and available data sources. This review culminated in a program assessment tool focused on four contributing areas of teen driver training and education: 1) Guardian Involvement; 2) Driver Education and Training Curricula Requirements; 3) GDL Coordination; and 4) Instructor Qualifications. The proposed methodology was presented to the Project Oversight Committee and was validated through two rounds of pilot testing using materials provided by programs and schools under the oversight of both WisDOT and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The resulting methodology informed the Phase II implementation plan recommendations. Work products included within this report are an annotated bibliography; a knowledge base documenting best practices and Wisconsin-specific data sources; a methodology that may be used to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of driver-training programs as they relate to the demonstrated safety and behavior of teen drivers in Wisconsin; and a three-phase implementation plan."--Technical report documentation page.

Book excerpt: A theoretical model of the determinants of young driver crash risk is outlined and some methodogical issues concerning types of available data, measures of crash risk and measures of exposure to risk are discussed. Within this framework, published literature on young driver crashes in Australia and other countries is reviewed. The general nature and magnitude of the problem is described in terms of data on fatal and serious injury crashes derived from mass databases; information from more detailed studies of sub-sets of crashes is used to provide a more comprehensive description of the patterns of occurrence & charateristic of young driver crashes. Information is discussed in relation to driver age, experience and gender, time of crash occurrence, passenger characteristics, crash type, pre-crash vehicle manoeuvres, driver errors, and alcohol and seatbelt offenses. Road accidents. Driver experience. Gender. Motivation Driver behaviour. Driver skill. Exposure. Driver age. Recently qualified drivers. Novice drivers.
