Based on a unique data set of nearly 23,000 seniors from more than 1,300 high schools who were tracked over several years, the book treats the following questions in detail: Who goes to college? Does low family income prevent some young people from enrolling, or does scholarship aid offset financial need? How important are scholastic aptitude scores, high school class rank, race, and socioeconomic background in determining college applications and admissions? Do test scores predict success in higher education? Using the data from the National Longitudinal Study of the Class of 1972, the authors present a set of interrelated analyses of student and institutional behavior, each focused on a particular aspect of the process of choosing and being chosen by a college. Among their interesting findings: most high school graduates would be admitted to some four-year college of average quality, were they to apply; applicants do not necessarily prefer the highest-quality school; high school class rank and SAT scores are equally important in college admissions; federal scholarship aid has had only a small effect on enrollments at four-year colleges but a much stronger effect on attendance at two-year colleges; the attention paid to SAT scores in admissions is commensurate with the power of the scores in predicting persistence to a degree. This clearly written book is an important source of information on a perpetually interesting topic.

The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between the academic and non-academic factors and the mathematical college preparedness of high school seniors. The study was conducted in MMSD and focused on seniors’ perceptions regarding academic and social integration factors that predict college readiness. The study also analyzed 12th grade students’ records that validated courses completed by the end of the senior year. The study was guided by the research question: What academic and non-academic factors predict mathematical college preparedness for high school seniors in the Madison Metropolitan School District? This study employed a descriptive mixed methods study and quantitative research approach. Two sample frames of high school students were selected to participate in this investigation. The first sample consisted of 499 12th grade high school students. These students were surveying concerning their perceptions regarding their career and college readiness as measured by social and academic integration. The findings that WKCE math score, 1st Time College Goer, ACT math score, and parents’ education level were significant predictors of college preparedness. The study also points to significant non-academic variables (peer and family support, personal study skills, and ability to comprehend content) as essential factors for college preparedness.

Book excerpt: Earning a college degree has been shown to have a number of positive socioeconomic impacts on individuals and society as a whole. Although researchers acknowledge that the decision to attend college is a complex process involving multiple factors, studies have focused primarily on individual reasons as part of a linear college choice paradigm. Individual obstacles to college attendance that consistently emerge in this strand of research include academic preparation, socioeconomic status, cost, family background, parental influence, motivation, and guidance counselor support (Harris & Halpin, 2002). College attendance rates are particularly low among students living in rural areas. Nationwide, only 59 percent of students from rural America choose to attend college, compared to 62 percent of their urban counterparts and 67 percent of students from suburban areas. (National Student Clearinghouse, 2015). The purpose of this study was to examine the college decision-making process of high school students in rural Vermont to better understand why fewer than 61 percent choose to attend college, despite more than 90 percent aspiring to do so at some point during their K-12 academic career (VSAC, 2016). A qualitative ethnographic case study approach was used to provide a unique student-focused perspective on the complexities of the college-decision making process as they go through it during their senior year of high school. A series of in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 students at two rural high schools throughout their senior year as they wrestled with an influx of information from multiple sources creating a series of pushes and pulls from guidance counselors, family members and friends with varying motives. Individual case study analyses were conducted on the following three groups of students based on their level of commitment to attend college at the start of their senior year: College Confident, College Considering and College Conflicted. A cross-case analysis of those three groups was also conducted. The result is a detailed account of how students in each group internalized and acted upon new information about their post-secondary plans, which depended heavily on when they received it, who they received it from and its quality. In most cases, the experience proved to be a frustrating, convoluted process that waxed and waned with each new piece of information. Ultimately, students made final college-going decisions based heavily on a combination of information that was not always accurate, sometimes misleading, and on the advice of at least one parent they perceived as having their best interest in mind.

Book excerpt: Traditionally known for their open-door admission policies, low tuition, and convenience, community college enrollment has grown drastically in the last decade. This increased enrollment, however, has not brought about an increase in degree attainment. In fact, only 29.9% of full-time degree- or certificate-seeking students at community colleges graduate in three years or less. Based on Astin's (2001) modified input-environment-outcome (I-E-O) model, this study investigated the relationship between college readiness measures taken in high school and the successful completion of a community college associate degree. The high school transcripts of 443 first-time, full-time students who graduated high school in May 2011 and enrolled at the community college in fall 2011 with a declared associate degree major were examined. The final and complete binary logistic regression model included all independent variables simultaneously, including demographics. Regression results indicated that the overall model was statistically reliable in distinguishing between successful and unsuccessful community college students. Taken together, among first-time, full-time, traditional age, degree-seeking community college students, the likelihood of attaining an associate degree within three years with a 2.0 or higher GPA was significantly associated with high school GPA, total high school credits earned, senior year math, and college credits earned in high school.

However, a growing majority of students do not fit within the high school to four-year college group, leaving gaps in the college choice research literature. This qualitative study addresses the college choice research gap though semi-structured interviews of 17 academically talented - 3.5 or higher grade point average with over 25 college credits completed - Pell Grant-eligible community college students seeking transfer to a four-year college. All participants demonstrated high levels of motivation to complete a baccalaureate. Twelve of participants applied to only one transfer college and five applied to two. Constraints on college choice included a variety of financial considerations, strategic recruiting strategies by four-year colleges, and a lack of detailed guidance and college knowledge. Utilizing a cultural capital framework for analysis, marked differences between the college experiences of traditional four-year students and high-achieving, low-income non-traditional community college students were found including differences based on class, race and cultural traditions.
