Book Synopsis Regional Industrial Analysis and Development by : Geoffrey J. D. Hewings
Download or read book Regional Industrial Analysis and Development written by Geoffrey J. D. Hewings and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977. This book provides an introduction to some of the more important techniques of regional analysis – techniques derived from geographical, regional economic and regional science theory – and describes the way some of these techniques have been applied in the identification of problems, development of strategy and evaluation of regional programmes. The theory and applications of methods of regional analysis are integrated with the use of examples taken from the USA, the UK and Canada. The author introduces the problems which are encountered in the field of regional analysis, describes some of the analytical tools, beginning with the fundamental model of the economic base approach, and then examines regional flows and the applicability of international trade theory to interregional trade. Considering the shortcomings of the aggregated base approach, input-output analysis is also examined.
Book Synopsis The Other Canon of Economics, Volume 1 by : Erik Reinert
Download or read book The Other Canon of Economics, Volume 1 written by Erik Reinert and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Other Canon Economics: Essays in the Theory and History of Uneven Economic Development brings together key essays on development economics from one of the most prolific and important development economists and historians of economic policy today. Erik S. Reinert argues through essays ranging from 1994 to 2020 that neo-classical economics damages developing countries, mostly via adherence to the theory of comparative advantage. Based on a long intellectual tradition, started by the Italian economists Giovanni Botero (1589) and Antonio Serra (1613), Reinert shows that the country which trades increasing returns goods – e.g. high-end manufacture – has advantages over the country which trades diminishing returns goods – e.g. commodities. This has important implications for today’s development strategies that, Reinert argues, should be seen as industrial strategies.

This book was released on 2011-06-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for informed and effective insights into key concepts and models of regional development and growth, from an endogenous growth perspective, has risen over the past decade. These recent advances address in particular local and regional assets and characteristics comprising inter alia creativity, knowledge, innovation forces and entrepreneurship. Access to and exploitation of these modern forms of human and social capital are of paramount importance for the dynamic regional economic environment in a city or region. This volume offers an overview and critical treatment of the spatial-economic roots, opportunities and impacts of new growth strategies, mainly from an evidence-based perspective. In the various contributions to this volume, relevant findings and strategic options are interpreted and discussed from both an analytical and a policy perspective to help cultivate creativity, human capital development and innovation as well as entrepreneurial activity, with a view to exploit the drivers of economic development, in order to strengthen the competitive edge of cities and regions.
