Book excerpt: As is tradition this Global Voice magazine summer issue brings together the talented winning, runner-up and finalist student articles in the CoBS 2022 student CSR article competition – now, the fifth year – to sit side-by-side with insights gleaned from the published research of our professors from the now eight member schools of this alliance dedicated to responsible leadership education. No time to waste! Welcome to this special summer solstice issue of Global Voice magazine #22 and delighted to publish this special issue of the Council on Business & Society quarterly magazine for your reading and download. We’re honoured to kick off the magazine with Prof. Adrian Zicari, ESSEC Business School-CoBS, co-authoring the editorial with special guest Camille Putois, CEO of the B4IG (Business For Inclusive Growth) initiative that brings together leading global companies, subject matter experts and academia to work on strategies to develop future business for the good of the widest number of citizens and the planet. We also feature a special spotlight on Prof. Mark Smith, Dean of Stellenbosch Business School, South Africa – Africa’s leading higher education institution and the latest member school of the CoBS alliance. A focal point of the highest importance in the coming years, Mark outlines the stakes at hand for the continent and the need for education to play an essential role in promoting diversity, responsible leadership and responsible business practices. In this issue, a host of insights and research-based content hosted in two sections: Business, Society and Planet. In Business, Society the contributors tackle the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the workplace, wellbeing and society; coopetition and how business rivals can become allies for a better world; the impact of political populism on climate action; how to deal with negative workplace emotions and aim at the positive; the role of business schools in building back better; and the phenomenon of presenteeism in companies that ultimately leads to poorer performance for firms – and poorer health for its employees. In the Planet section, you’ll find insights on how corporations can become more sustainable; an exploration of greenflation and the challenges facing our transition to a green economy; the stock exchange and building corporate value for potential investors through CSR; a spotlight on the ground-breaking ISE sustainability index in Brazil by one of its founders, Prof. Mario Monzoni; how to cope with the barriers in the way of reaching Net-Zero; and practitioner insight from ESG consulting firm Ksapa on designing solutions for resilient raw materials supply. In addition, our CoBS design team provides its usual beautiful graphics and our latest wry take on modern times with our opening double-page cartoon. And if you wish to apply for one or several of the top-ranked degree programmes offered by our CoBS member schools, outlines of these and contact details can be found throughout the magazine. Apply now – and positively change both your life and those of others! Do what you have to do And finally, a word on the latest Global Voice magazine front cover and its accompanying subtitle. For some of us, the strawberry may be associated with June and the long summer months – succulent, sun-drenched and tasty. This time, this gift of nature looks in a pretty bad way. “Food”, as it were, “for thought” in today’s chaotic context of supplies of essential necessities and the probable food risks for the wider world that conflict and intolerance in Europe may bring us. So interpret the cover wisely – and do what you have to do. No time to waste! Enjoy your reading! Tom Gamble, Council on Business & Society

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Neu-Ulm , course: Marketing, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the marketing mix from the perspective of product policy, in the context of which a company decides not only on the introduction of new products but also on the elimination of products that are no longer successful. In order to be able to apply this instrument accordingly, the product policy is examined with a case study of the company Ferrero S.p.A. Today's fast-moving world brings enormous challenges for companies and requires them to constantly adapt to the needs and expectations of customers as well as to the ever-changing trends in order to preserve and improve their market position. One way of making a decisive contribution to the success of the company is an efficient marketing concept. For companies, marketing is a central aspect of corporate management, which is sometimes quite cost-intensive and therefore, in the best case, should increase returns. Especially for companies that have established themselves in highly competitive markets, this can become a problem, whereby a meticulously planned marketing strategy represents a sustainable investment in the success of the company. In order to achieve this most effectively, various techniques and strategies have been developed. One of these tools includes the marketing mix, which can be used to develop success-oriented marketing concepts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case study research has a long history within the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, dating back to the early 1920's. At first it was a useful way for researchers to make valid inferences from events outside the laboratory in ways consistent with the rigorous practices of investigation inside the lab. Over time, case study approaches garnered interest in multiple disciplines as scholars studied phenomena in context. Despite widespread use, case study research has received little attention among the literature on research strategies. The Encyclopedia of Case Study Research provides a compendium on the important methodological issues in conducting case study research and explores both the strengths and weaknesses of different paradigmatic approaches. These two volumes focus on the distinctive characteristics of case study research and its place within and alongside other research methodologies. Key Features Presents a definition of case study research that can be used in different fields of study Describes case study as a research strategy rather than as a single tool for decision making and inquiry Guides rather than dictates, readers' understanding and applications of case study research Includes a critical summary in each entry, which raises additional matters for reflection Makes case study relevant to researchers at various stages of their careers, across philosophic divides, and throughout diverse disciplines Key Themes Academic Disciplines Case Study Research Design Conceptual Issues Data Analysis Data Collection Methodological Approaches Theoretical Traditions Theory Development and Contributions From Case Study Research Types of Case Study Research

Book excerpt: The differences between alcohol, food, gambling, and tobacco as consumer products are obvious. Yet research suggests that there are underlying similarities in the way that food, alcohol, and gambling industries are replicating the tobacco industry's strategy of attempting to influence and determine public health policy. Impact of Market Forces on Addictive Substances and Behaviours examines the 'web of influence' formed by industries which manufacture and sell addictive products and trade associations and policy intermediaries such as lobbyists and think tanks in the EU. Using a new dataset on these corporate networks, it quantifies the strength of the connections between the actors in these webs, and uses this data to guide qualitative studies on the content of corporate strategy and, specifically, on corporations' attempts to 'capture' policy and three crucial ancillary domains: science, civil society, and the news and promotional media. The study draws on the structural data to outline the comprehensive engagement of industry with policy issues at the EU and the ways in which corporations and stakeholders attempt to influence policy in their favour. It concludes by asking what kinds of solutions might be possible to the evident public health challenges posed by the addictions web of influence, and proposes key reforms that have the best chance of minimising the impact of disease stemming from addictions in European countries. Impact of Market Forces on Addictive Substances and Behaviours is based on the research from ALICE RAP, a multidisciplinary European study of addictive substances and behaviours in contemporary society. This is an essential resource for public health researchers, policy makers in the addictive substance and behaviours field, and academics specialising in the fields of governance of addictive substances and behaviours and public health, as well as GPs and social workers wishing to supplement their knowledge on current addiction issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book portrays the state-of-the-art of coopetition strategy regarded as a compelling mindset to exploit entirely the potential of actors’ interdependencies (firms, governments, suppliers, customers, scientists and partners) in today’s global scenarios. It provides the rudiments for navigating an exploration journey into a virtually new and emergent management subfield. This volume presents three key distinctive features: it is the first attempt that delves systematically and rigorously into coopetition strategy and coopetitive behaviour; it clearly elucidates the contribution of coopetition to the advancement of strategic management and managerial practice; it is the outcome of the collective brains of several scholars, with diverse geographical roots and backgrounds, who cultivate original research on co-opetition strategy from a variety of perspectives (economic, managerial, political) and multiple methods (theory building, game-theoretical, experimental and inductive case-based inquiries). Looking into this volume, the reader will realize that, while the topic is at the beginning of its lifecycle, coopetition strategy has touched an important crossroads which solicits a more comprehensive and systematic assessment. If mindfully formulated and implemented, this hybrid strategic option is able to increase returns and generate value for shareholders, entrepreneurs, managers and coopetitors.

Book excerpt: Women, Business and the Law 2021 is the seventh in a series of annual studies measuring the laws and regulations that affect women’s economic opportunity in 190 economies. The project presents eight indicators structured around women’s interactions with the law as they move through their lives and careers: Mobility, Workplace, Pay, Marriage, Parenthood, Entrepreneurship, Assets, and Pension. This year’s report updates all indicators as of October 1, 2020 and builds evidence of the links between legal gender equality and women’s economic inclusion. By examining the economic decisions women make throughout their working lives, as well as the pace of reform over the past 50 years, Women, Business and the Law 2021 makes an important contribution to research and policy discussions about the state of women’s economic empowerment. Prepared during a global pandemic that threatens progress toward gender equality, this edition also includes important findings on government responses to COVID-19 and pilot research related to childcare and women’s access to justice.

Book excerpt: Recently vilified as the prime dynamic driving home the breach between poor and rich nations, here the branding process is rehabilitated as a potential saviour of the economically underprivileged. Brand New Justice, now in a revised paperback edition, systematically analyses the success stories of the Top Thirteen nations, demonstrating that their wealth is based on the 'last mile' of the commercial process: buying raw materials and manufacturing cheaply in third world countries, these countries realise their lucrative profits by adding value through finishing, packaging and marketing and then selling the branded product on to the end-user at a hugely inflated price. The use of sophisticated global media techniques alongside a range of creative marketing activities are the lynchpins of this process. Applying his observations on economic history and the development and impact of global marketing, Anholt presents a cogent plan for developing nations to benefit from globalization. So long the helpless victim of capitalist trading systems, he shows that they can cross the divide and graduate from supplier nation to producer nation. Branding native produce on a global scale, making a commercial virtue out of perceived authenticity and otherness and fully capitalising on the 'last mile' benefits are key to this graduation and fundamental to forging a new global economic balance. Anholt argues with a forceful logic, but also backs his hypothesis with enticing glimpses of this process actually beginning to take place. Examining activities in India, Thailand, Russia and Africa among others, he shows the risks, challenges and pressures inherent in 'turning the tide', but above all he demonstrates the very real possibility of enlightened capitalism working as a force for good in global terms.

This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.
