Book excerpt: "AVID" ("Advancement Via Individual Determination") is a college-readiness program whose primary goal is to prepare middle and high school students for enrollment in four-year colleges through increased access to and support in advanced courses. The program, which focuses on underserved, middle-achieving students (defined as students earning B, C, and even D grades), places students in college preparatory classes (e.g., honors and Advancement Placement classes) while providing academic support through a daily elective period and ongoing tutorials. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) reviewed 66 studies on "AVID" for adolescent learners. One of these studies meets WWC evidence standards with reservations; the remaining 65 studies do not meet either WWC evidence standards or eligibility screens. Based on one study, the WWC found no discernible effects on comprehension for adolescent learners. The conclusions presented in this report may change as new research emerges. Appendices include: (1) Study characteristics: Rorie, 2007; (2) Outcome measure for the comprehension domain; (3) Summary of study findings included in the rating for the comprehension domain; (4) "AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)" rating for the comprehension domain; and (5) Extent of evidence by domain. (Contains 8 footnotes.).

Book excerpt: Texas high schools are identified by the ACT as falling behind the national average for producing college ready students. As a result Texas schools utilize targeted intervention to produce more college-ready students. The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) system is widely used by over 945 schools in Texas to aid in producing college ready students. This purpose of this study was to examine the students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of the AVID program for their own college readiness. This study targeted five high schools along the Interstate 35 corridor in North Central Texas that utilize the AVID program. This study surveyed high school seniors shortly before their high school graduation on their perceptions of the AVID program and what individual aspects of AVID they believed to be the most useful in preparing them for college coursework. The results revealed that the student participants positively viewed AVID and believed that they were more college ready as a result of participation in the AVID program. The students also identified specific strategies of AVID they believed the most useful to their academic success. Qualitative data identified two major themes of AVID that students perceived the most beneficial. These student-identified themes were: organization and collaboration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines how states, schools, and postsecondary institutions might best help improve college readiness and completion. Though more students are entering college, many drop out, especially those who are low income and/or of color. To address this problem, educational stakeholders have focused on the concept of “college readiness,” or the preparation a student needs to succeed in college. However, what it means to be college ready and how to help more students become ready are questions without clear answers. By way of historical and contemporary analyses, this book uses California as a case study to demonstrate how the state has endeavored to make postsecondary opportunity accessible for all students. The contributors also explore the challenges that remain and address what states and schools can do to improve college readiness and completion. “This book adds important information to the debates and discussions around this critical topic.” — Caroline Sotello Viernes Turner, coeditor of Understanding Minority-Serving Institutions

Book excerpt: For more than two decades, the concept of student engagement has grown from simple attention in class to a construct comprised of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components that embody and further develop motivation for learning. Similarly, the goals of student engagement have evolved from dropout prevention to improved outcomes for lifelong learning. This robust expansion has led to numerous lines of research across disciplines and are brought together clearly and comprehensively in the Handbook of Research on Student Engagement. The Handbook guides readers through the field’s rich history, sorts out its component constructs, and identifies knowledge gaps to be filled by future research. Grounding data in real-world learning situations, contributors analyze indicators and facilitators of student engagement, link engagement to motivation, and gauge the impact of family, peers, and teachers on engagement in elementary and secondary grades. Findings on the effectiveness of classroom interventions are discussed in detail. And because assessing engagement is still a relatively new endeavor, chapters on measurement methods and issues round out this important resource. Topical areas addressed in the Handbook include: Engagement across developmental stages. Self-efficacy in the engaged learner. Parental and social influences on engagement and achievement motivation. The engaging nature of teaching for competency development. The relationship between engagement and high-risk behavior in adolescents. Comparing methods for measuring student engagement. An essential guide to the expanding knowledge base, the Handbook of Research on Student Engagement serves as a valuable resource for researchers, scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in such varied fields as clinical child and school psychology, educational psychology, public health, teaching and teacher education, social work, and educational policy.

Topics include: conceptualizing and framing youth mental health through a dual-factor model; building culturally responsive schools; implementing positive behavior interventions and supports; inculcating social-emotional learning within schools impacted by trauma; creating a multidisciplinary approach to foster a positive school culture and promote students' mental health; preventing school violence and advancing school safety; cultivating student engagement and connectedness; creating resilient classrooms and schools; strengthening preschool, childcare and parenting practices; building family-school partnerships; promoting physical activity, nutrition, and sleep; teaching emotional self-regulation; promoting students' positive emotions, character and purpose; building a foundation for trauma-informed schools; preventing bullying; supporting highly mobile students; enfranchising socially marginalized students; preventing school failure and school dropout; providing evidence-based supports in the aftermath of a crisis; raising the emotional well-being of students with anxiety and depression; implementing state-wide practices that promote student wellness and resilience; screening for academic, behavioral, and emotional health; and accessing targeted and intensive mental health services"--
