Book excerpt: This quantitative study investigated the impact of environmental learning programs on the environmental worldview (attitudes, beliefs, and values) of secondary school aged students. In order to research the effect that environmental learning programs have on the environmental orientation of individuals, 41 high school students who were currently taking an A.P. Environmental Science class were given New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) survey which is designed to measure the student's environmental orientation. The data was analyzed using a 95% confidence t-interval, which allowed the researcher to collect data from a sample population and apply the statistical analysis of the results to the larger population of which the sample came from. The population to which this particular sample came from would be the entire population of secondary students who have taken a semester-long environmental science course. The results supported the research hypothesis that students who participate in environmental learning programs during the course of their secondary education will have a proenvironmental worldview (attitudes, beliefs, and values). However, in order to determine the extent to which the results support the hypothesis further research is needed.

The Intergovernmental Conference on Environmental Education (UNESCO, 1978) recommended the primary categories of the environmental education curriculum goals and objectives of (a) awareness, (b) knowledge, (c) attitudes, (d) skills, (e) participation.

Book excerpt: The term "environmental attitudes" reflect one's propensity ( of either favorable or unfavorable) towards a given environment cause in terms of beliefs or perceived status. Studies on environmental attitudes have gained numerous criticisms for not being theoretical exhaustive. Addressing that, this study systematically developed a comprehensive measurement model that addresses the multidimensionality of environmental attitudes. This study specifically assessed the validity and internal consistency of the proposed measurement model of environmental attitudes within the context of education for sustainability (EfS) using SEM-AMOS. This study also evaluated the utility ofthe proposed measurement model through the testing of measurement invariance [sic] across genders, nationalities, and courses among the undergraduates in Abu Dhabi. With respect to these specific objectives, this study successfully sampled 130 respondents using an online-based questionnaire survey. The instrument used in this study was adapted from the original items of Environmental Attitudes Inventory (EAI) (Milfont & Duckitt 2010), with the considerations on both preservation and utilization as the higher -order dimensions of environmental attitudes. Following the analysis, the obtained results revealed a refined seven-factor model of EAI with 21 items, in which both convergent validity and discriminant validity were validated. The environmental attitudes demonstrated multidimensionality hierarchically, as demonstrated by the obtained results of the first-order, second-order, and the third-order models. Besides that, this study also found that the undergraduates of science and technology courses, compared to the social science courses, demonstrated higher propensity to preserve the environment. Conclusively, this study systematically explored the horizontal and vertical structures of environmental attitudes in the development of the proposed measurement model to assess the environmental attitudes. Nonetheless, this study revealed that pro-environmental attitudes undergraduate students tend to be limited to certain group within the context of EfS, thus would incline to constrain the resolution of environmental problems. Thirdly, the confirmation of the relevance of human and perceived environmental threat according to culture -specific perspective in the formation and determination of environmental attitudes.

Book excerpt: Often during second semester, I lose the attention of my students due to their preoccupation with being second semester seniors and with college acceptances. This project used student-centered, problem-based learning to regain their attention and make them more accountable for their learning in my AP ® Environmental Science course. I also looked at the affect it had on their study strategies, motivation, and metacognition in class, along with my own attitude about teaching. This project investigated the effect that problem-based learning had on understanding of AP ® Environmental Science topics when compared to a traditional teacher-centered lecture based unit. Students understanding of material was assessed using pre and postunit assessments, along with formative assessments, and concept map interviews. Other methods of data collection were used to understand changes in student's attitudes, study methods, and metacognition in all units. The attitude of students was determined through using attitude surveys and individual interviews. Student surveys along with interviews helped understand the changes in study habits and metacognition. Observations made throughout the units also supplied data to analyze these areas. Results indicated a mixed effect on each of the areas addressed. In the first treatment unit there was a positive trend, with improvement in attitude, attainment of knowledge of concepts, and metacognition, but in the second treatment the trend was opposite. The same observation can be made with my attitude toward teaching that in the first unit it was more positive while in the second unit it was more negative.
