Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, , language: English, abstract: When learning a foreign language errors occur. This is natural and can even help students improve their performances in the target language, which justifies the relevance of error analysis. Only if you are aware of and only if you understand your own errors you can try and avoid them in the future and thus improve your performance. Below I will illustrate different kinds of errors that can occur in the second language acquisition process mainly referring to non-native English speakers learning English as a foreign language in the classroom. This process is a very individual and idiosyncratic one, i.e. each student develops his or her own interlanguage when learning a new language. An IL is defined as a “language which is between two languages, the learner’s L1 and an L2” (Faerch, Haastrup & Phillipson, 1984, p. 269). An IL typically shows features of both the learner’s L1 and his or her L2. But there can also be found features not seeming to have anything to do with either L1 or L2. According to Yule (2006) an IL is a variable system, i.e. it changes continually. It has its own rules (Yule, 2006). This hypothesis originally comes from Selinker. According to him, there are processes characteristic of interlanguages, which leads to the interlingual errors (see 3.3 explanation). But first I will take a closer look at the possible causes of errors and after that the ways of dealing with learners’ errors will be examined and in the second part of this paper a learner text containing errors typical of the second language learning process will be analyzed.

It also tries to help teachers and learners of English as a foreign language, to know about the most common errors made by the learners of English as a foreign language, and some very important issues of understanding the importance of correcting error in the process of acquiring a second language. The paper also deals with the number of errors that must be corrected, and at what stages the teacher must correct them and how the teacher can correct the error of the learner without frustration. To achieve these elements the third-semester students of English and Translation department at Languages and Translation Faculty of Misrata University were interviewed, and given a number of English words, to explore their correct, and incorrect pronunciation. Those errors, are analyzed. Data was collected and analyzed with the guidance of phonemic transcription in the Cambridge English Pronouncing Dictionary.

Book excerpt: Pronunciation is a neglected area in the EFL classroom and Vietnamese EFL learns have trouble producing final consonants. Therefore, this study addressed the Vietnamese university students' problems with final consonant pronunciation and aimed to contribute further knowledge about final consonant errors in English of Vietnamese non-English major university students. The purposes of this research are twofold. The first purpose is to investigate students' final consonant errors and the causes of this problem. The second objective is to see whether EFL teachers can accurately identify their students' final consonant errors and to investigate their suggestions for teaching final consonants in the EFL classroom. The sample included 35 student participants at pre-intermediate or intermediate level and ten EFL teachers. A mixed-method approach combining an oral reading technique and a semi-structured interview was employed in this study. Students' ending consonant errors in the recordings were classified in the tables. Teachers' and students' interview transcripts were analyzed by content analysis to discover the causes of students' problems and teachers' recommendations. Teachers' responses were compared with the students' recordings to see whether EFL teachers accurately identified the same problems as their students in the classroom. The findings revealed that the consonant clusters, /z/, /ʃ/, and /ʤ/ had the most frequent errors and Vietnamese EFL learners tented [sic] to omit the final consonant sounds. Also, the teachers and students agreed that the causes of students' final consonant problems included L1 interface, students' lacking knowledge about English phonology, little exposure to English, curriculum, and teaching methods. Most of the teachers identified the students' errors correctly. There were four main suggestions for teaching ending consonants which were listening and repeating, using the IPA and place and manner of articulation, doing pronunciation exercises and listening tasks, and organizing games. This research raises awareness of the students' final consonant errors and the causes of students' problems. The teachers' recommendations can be integrated int the language teaching for effective ending consonant teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Error detection contributes to learning English as a foreign language. Although several studies have looked at lexical errors, various studies from different countries have come up with different findings on the most common forms of lexical errors. As a result, it is crucial to investigate the issue in a Vietnamese context to get insights into the lexical errors of EFL learners. The three objectives of the research are exploring types of lexical errors made by Vietnamese students, identifying learning factors that contribute to lexical errors making, and identifying types of errors that are likely to be corrected by teachers. This study addresses three study questions to resolve the existing problems: (1) What are the types of lexical errors made by students? (2) What factors lead to lexical errors in students' writing? (3) Which lexical errors do teachers believe should be corrected in the classroom? A mixed-method approach and convenience sampling were used in this study. To answer the problem raised in three research questions, 40 essays written by freshmen at the B1 level were gathered, and their errors were classified and evaluated. The convenience sampling method was used to collect data. Five semi-structured interviews with students and five with teachers were transcribed and coded with thematic coding. The findings show that students at the B1 level made significantly more lexical formal errors than lexical-semantic errors. Errors of the formal mis-selection category account for the majority of lexical formal errors, with distortions and mis-formation ranking second and third, respectively. In lexical-semantic errors, collocation errors are more common than sense relation errors. Furthermore, there are a significant number of suffix-type errors and collocational errors compared to other sub-types. Regarding RQ2, lexical errors in writing primarily result from internal factors. The primary causes of lexical error are a significant lack of profound lexical knowledge in both depth and breadth dimensions and a deliberate disregard for proofreading and planning ideas. Concerning RQ3, teachers would like to correct both lexical formal and semantic lexical errors in the classroom, focusing on consonant-based type errors in the former and collocational errors in the latter. Thus, teachers tend to correct errors that students make the most - collocational errors. A lack of understanding and basic knowledge at the B1 level are mainly given as primary reasons for making lexical errors found in students' writing by teachers. Beside, teachers also reported ways of presenting and correcting lexical errors in the classroom. Interestingly, data shows that teachers frequently present errors in the classroom by showing errors on the available TV screens and give explicit/direct corrective feedback. Despite the project's time constraints, the study makes a contribution to the field of lexical error analysis and teaching and assessment of EFL students. The study yields some practical pedagogical implications. Additional instruction on collocations and self-correction, and creativity in presenting and correcting errors are highly encouraged.

The study also investigated the negative effect of first language (L1) transfer on Vietnamese EFL language acquisition. The researcher used the combination of Contrastive Analysis (CA) and Error Analysis (EA) in this study, first using EA to analyze 50 papers writter by Vietnamese non-English-major students at a university, then using CA to help the researcher pinpoint causes of learners' errors. The analysis was paired with fifteen students to see how they described the influence of their L1, to help determine whether L1 negative transfer appeard to effect preposition errors.
