Book excerpt: "Introduction: Little research has been done on roles of the Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) position. Studies in the past have looked at the number of female administrators compared to their male counterparts. These studies do not actually determine if those women in the SWA position are satisfied with their jobs, if they are doing what they initially thought they would be, and if they are doing what the NCAA says a typical SWAs role and duties should be. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics and perceptions of current Senior Woman Administrators in NCAA, Division II institutions. The study looked at the general demographics of SWAs and the overall job satisfaction SWAs had with their position. Methods: 272 NCAA Division II institutions were sent a survey containing questions on demographics, education, prior experience, additional jobs, a scale to assess the SWAs duties compared to those duties set forth by the NCAA SWA handbook, the importance of each duty and responsibility according to the respondent, and an open section for respondents to add their own comments and experiences regarding their SWA position. Results: There were 102 valid responses for a response rate of 37.5%. SWAs have 1.388 additional job duties ranging from assistant/associate athletic directors to head coaches. They valued maintaining relations with athletes (2.69), and advocating for women's sports (2.52), while making recommendations for department salaries (1.05), and allocating of scholarship money (1.40) were their least valued tasks. The mean amount of experience a SWA has was 5.49 years of collegiate head coaching experience and 4.91 of athletic administration. A Master's degree was the most common highest level of education with 78.9% reaching this level. Overall satisfaction with the SWA position was 6.67 on a 10 point scale, with 10 being the most satisfied"--Abstract.

Given the underrepresentation of female Athletic Directors in intercollegiate athletics and the concern that women may experience difficulty accessing such positions, there is a growing need to understand the career experiences and expectations of women in senior-level management positions in intercollegiate athletics. The purpose of this study was to explore the career development of female assistant and associate athletic directors at NCAA Division I institutions. This study investigated participants' (a) career goals and expectations, (b) supports and barriers to career goals, and (c) negotiation strategies and coping mechanisms for managing barriers and supports in the pursuit of career goals. Data were collected from 15 senior-level female administrators in NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics departments. Career goals for participants included (a) contributing to the development of student athletes and (b) advancing within an athletic department to a position of influence. For the majority of participants, a "position of influence" did not include a career goal of achieving the position of Athletic Director. Participants identified supports to achieving career goals as relationships with supervisors and mentors, professional development activities, opportunities for career advancement. Barriers to career goals included factors participants associated with a male-dominated industry and organizational structures. Participants perceived, however, the culture of intercollegiate athletics is shifting to one that is more gender inclusive. Moreover, findings suggest the perceived gender typing of positions in an athletic department may be a product of choice rather than a male-dominated industry or organizational structure. Finally, participants negotiated barriers by learning new skills, engaging networks, and through a process of self-reflection. Study findings provided valuable information for sport managers in intercollegiate athletics, the sport management classroom, and women and men entering intercollegiate athletic administration.

Book excerpt: Historically, college athletics have advanced men over women in top leadership roles, sustaining gender hierarchy. Senior leadership positions within intercollegiate athletics, such as the athletic director or associate athletic director, are mainly held by White men. Women and racial minorities are considerably unrepresented in athletic director roles. In 2021, the National Collegiate Athletic Association reported that Black men held 13% of athletic director positions, whereas the role was held by 3% of Black women. Research indicated there are unique barriers that women of color experience as they strive to obtain the athletic director title. The barriers women of color experience affect diversity, equity, and inclusion in the athletic community as well as the number of Black women mentors and role models within the profession. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences, career challenges, and mentoring experiences of Black women at NCAA member institutions. A phenological approach was utilized to collect data from interviews with seven Black women athletic directors. Confidential, virtual, semistructured interviews were used, and the theoretical framework applied in the study was Black feminist thought. The emerged themes were revealed: (a) early exposure; (b) collegiate athletic mentors; (c) male-dominated industry and imposter syndrome; (d) navigating COVID-19 and chartering new paths; (e) athletic professional development programs; (f) angry Black woman stereotype and aggressiveness; (g) understanding one’s value and networking; (h) budgetary and fundraising experience; (i) biased hiring practices and growing the pipeline; (j) utilization of search firms with diversity, equity and inclusion focus; and (k) creation of Black female student-athlete pipeline. The findings from this study indicate that while Black women have made small strides in reaching the athletic director role, more attention and effort should be placed on the challenges and experiences that impact their paths. Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to investigate the factors women of color in athletic administration perceive to be contributors to the underrepresentation of minority women in Division I athletic director leadership positions. The study sought to identify and understand barriers that ostensibly impact women of color. Moreover, it serves current and future minority women to overcome similar trials to advance their collegiate athletic careers. Furthermore, the study sought to provide a lexicon of strategies that minority women regard as bridges to the racial and gender leadership gaps within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) organization. Previous studies are limited regarding social dominance and critical race theoretical frameworks. The need existed to investigate the inordinate number of minority women in NCAA leadership and how that is impacted by the intersectionality of their race and gender. Since the inaugural summary, Dr. Richard Lapchick’s The Institute For Diversity and Ethics in Sport report showed college athletics continue to underperform as it relates to racial diversity in NCAA leadership. According to Lapchick, women and people of color lack leadership opportunities in college sports compared to their White counterparts. I collected data from 12 women of color (11 African American women and 1 Asian woman) drawn from collegiate institutions who currently hold varying levels of athletic director and senior women administrator positions within Division 1 athletic departments. The women chosen met the eligibility criterion to provide data from firsthand knowledge. The criteria included being a member of a Division 1 institution’s athletic department, being a woman of color, and seeking, having sought, or planning to seek an athletic director position. Material for the study included 12 interview questions, including demographics, career paths, and barriers relating to the research questions. Interview questions were open-ended and allowed participants to expand on their answers and offer additional information. All 12 women believed gender and racial barriers contributed to the underrepresentation. The participants suggested networking, mentoring, and not limiting their pursuits were necessary to become leaders. Future research is suggested to provide a thorough understanding of the racial and gender inequities in NCAA Division I athletic leadership. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if differences exist among NCAA divisions I, II and III as well as between Athletic Directors and Primary Women Administrators with regard to the perceived competencies and preparatory coursework required of athletic administrators. A mail survey utilizing a six point forced choice Likert rating scale was constructed from a review of the literature and modifications of the survey instrument "Athletic Club Managers Survey" developed by Lambrecht (1986). The questionnaire contained 46 competency statements and 30 course content area statements as well as a set of demographic questions. The 1987-88 NCAA Directory listed 466 institutions which employed both an Athletic Director and a Primary Woman Administrator. Two hundred five of these institutions were systematically randomly selected and received two questionnaires, one for the Athletic Director and one for the Primary Woman Administrator. Three hundred and forty-nine questionnaires were returned yielding an 85% response rate. It was hypothesized that there were no significant differences between the responses of athletic administrators from the three divisions of the NCAA with regard to the competency and course content area statements. The analysis of variance technique was used to analyze the data. Where differences existed the Newman-Keuls test was employed to determine the location. The null hypothesis was rejected for 20 competency items and 17 course content area items. Athletic Directors and Primary Women Administrators were also studied. Fifteen competency items and 14 course content area items were rejected in this comparison. The top six ranked competency items were: 1. Enforce NCAA Rules, 2. Human Relations, 3. Staff Communications, 4. Decision Making Process, 5. Budget Preparation and Control, and 6. Interpret NCAA Rules. These top six ranked competency items were the same in each division, although the order of importance varied. Competency items were rated higher than course content area items. Of the top 16 items with means above 5.0, only three items were course content area items. Public Relations, Speech and Writing were the top three ranked courses. Results of this study indicate that there is limited significant difference among the three NCAA Divisions or between Athletic Directors and Primary Women Administrators in their perception of competencies and coursework necessary for athletic administrators.
