Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book tells readers: tracing the classical music networks that Cuban composers cultivated between 1940 and 1991 through examining compositions, ensembles, and cultural institutions with a microhistorical approach. It sets the foundation for investigating how aesthetics and politics intersected in the case studies explored throughout the book: individual points of view largely determined the degree to which composers engaged in various local and international artistic networks; and these networks were constantly being nurtured and shaped by their actors, who also had to contend with national and global political and economic circumstances. This chapter provides readers with working definitions of key concepts: modernism, avant-garde, experimentalism, and vanguardia. Key figures Fernando Ortiz and Alejo Carpentier and their contributions to the intellectual milieu that Cuban composers inhabited -especially the concepts of transculturation and lo real maravilloso, respectively-are also discussed. It contextualizes the book within existing scholarship on 20th-century classical music of the Americas, Eastern Europe, and the Cold War, as well as those dealing with Cuban music and Cuban studies more broadly"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance studies in the Western art music tradition have often been dominated by the relationship of theoretical score-analysis to performance, although some recent trends have aimed at dislodging the primacy of the score in favour of assessing performance on its own terms. In this book Julian Hellaby further develops these trends by placing performance firmly at the heart of his investigations and presents a structured approach to analysing the interpretation of a musical work from the perspective of a musically informed listener. To enable analysis of individual interpretations, the author develops a conceptual framework in which a series of performance-related categories is arranged hierarchically into an 'interpretative tower'. Using this framework to analyse the acoustic evidence of a recording, interpretative elements are identified and used to assess the relationship between a performance and a work. The viability of the interpretative tower is tested in three major case studies. Contrasting recorded performances of solo keyboard works by Bach, Messiaen and Brahms are the focus of these studies, and analysis of the performances, using the tower model, uncovers an interpretative rationale. The book is wide-ranging in scope and holistic in approach, offering a means of enhancing a listener's appreciation of an interpretation. It is richly illustrated with examples taken from commercial recordings and from the author's own recordings of the three focal works. A CD of the latter is included.

Form and style are analysed, with abundant musical examples and frequent allusions to the views of other commentators. Each volume contains a preface, calendar, lists of musical sources and references, and an index.

While studying the book, students can expect to ask themselves, "Am I at the proper distance from the piano?" and, "Are my wrists level with the white keys?" among other gentle reminders that encourage mindfulness and positivity at the piano bench. Whether adapted for a school's exam requirements, private lessons, music therapy sessions, or general music classes, lessons and exercises in The Piano Proficiency Exam Review Book will make time spent at the piano an enjoyable experience.

Book excerpt: Francis Poulenc: A Bio-Bibliography is a thorough presentation of the works of this often performed and critically appreciated 20th-century composer. George R. Keck traces events in Poulenc's life and offers a list of works and performances with the primary focus on those facts and influences which contributed to the development of the composer's distinctive musical style. Included in the text is a substantial discography as well as annotated entries by and about the composer which cover every phase of his career and affirm Poulenc's place in 20th-century music. The highly selective annotated bibliography comprises the major portion of the text. Since Keck's documentation of the development of Poulenc's style covers only representative works, he includes a list of all of Poulenc's compositions, arranged both alphabetically and chronologically, in the two appendixes. A complete index of names, places, and titles concludes the book.

Book excerpt: One of the greatest of the pianists after the time of Liszt, Ferruccio Busoni was a turn-of-the-century composer whose music has recently begun to be taken very seriously in academic circles and among contemporary performers. This work is the first volume to offer a comprehensive, annotated bibliography covering a wide range of published and unpublished materials, including Busoni's librettos and his perceptive essays on the future of music. It also provides a brief biography and detailed listings of Busoni's compositions, together with an extensive discography. The list of works presents information on original works, cadenzas, transcriptions, editions, and performances. The discography lists transcriptions and arrangements in addition to recordings of original works. Piano rolls and recordings by Busoni are included. Among the subject categories in the bibliography are Busoni's writings; a guide to the contents of the editions of his writings; his correspondence; studies and commentaries on Busoni's composition, performances, and writings; and personal reminiscences by those who knew him. Up-to-date information about new editions and reprints of Busoni's works is given. An appropriate addition to library music collections, this work is a valuable resource for both musicologists and performers.
